I was only ever punished physically when it wasn't my mom, and usually it was over nonsense that children do anyway. For leaving messes out at my grandma's house she would use a switch or a fly swatter. For doing something that aggravated my alcoholic dad I have been spanked violently, whipped with a belt (all over my body), thrown face first into a dresser and then beaten (after being convinced that I wasn't going to be hurt if I opened the door). Do you want to know what I learned from these punishments? I learned who I need to avoid and where to hide from them and who I could trust because it certainly wasn't those two people. Abusing your kids doesn't teach them anything because you aren't providing any instruction when you put your hands to them. They instead learn not to get caught and grow resentful of you. Do you want your kids to do that to you?

Being spanking and being beaten are two different things

One is more sever than the other and even though the severity is more in my case it still didn't do anything beneficial to my obedience.
