I tought oryx is a hive god?

Wy are there taken hive?? It doesn't make sence. The hive worship oryx, so why are they not fighting for him voluntary? Post your ideas below. Edit: we got some interesting theories here. Edit 2: the answer i personally like the most, is that oryx takes the hive because they already failed to destroy us once. Edit 3: so apparently i missed a part in the proloque where 3 knights sacrifice themselfs to oryx. I just watched it, so my question is answered. Thanks for all your replies guardians!

  • Hive culture as a whole is centered around pain. Be it the Ritual of Rebirth, the Urn of Sacrifice, and the death of Omar and how the Heart of Crota used it to nurture a fresh spawn. Sadism, masochism, all in a bid to deal the most, and recieve the most pain. To accept it as a challenge and to understand it as something to be admired. Indeed, the Hive accept the Darkness wholly and entirely, the most hallowed sacrifice themselves to The Taken King after proving themselves on what Bungie has described as their crusade against all that is a source and all that is compatible to the Light.

I believe they've stated somewhere they are ripped through space and time through the darkness. It makes them stronger. About the god part Luke smith already hinted on it in the GI interview. He seems to be more of a figure head. I assume it is very similar to old Egyptian/Medieval hierarchy mixed with the animal pack/family mentality. Luke smith said he was knighted. Idk how realistic this is but it seems to be almost as a dictatorship/cult. He came to power and they live for a very long time, therefore his son, which might be more of an apprentice (see last paragraph) would be next in succession. Maybe when the time came Crota would overthrow Orxy as maybe Orxy overthrew his "father", etc. A knight might have moved up rank and Orxy saw this and raised him through the ranks (ritual-progressions.) We know Ogres are Thralls that have been warped by the wizards. Maybe this is the case with knights. Metamorphous seems to be a theme with the hive. Husk of the pit, Thralls, Acolytes. Thrall are the basest as said in the cards. They go to either Acolytes or Ogres. Acolytes transform to Knights (maybe also wizards as well) through a ritual, as their cards says they seek ascension. Knights wield some form of magic through being able to conjure a shield of darkness. Knights then turn into higher forms of them selves. Gulrots card talk about the wizards preforming a metamorphosis on I assume a hive ogre. There are all these different speciality names/positions (flame prince, wretched, fist, hated, swarm princes, etc) There also could be a chance that Orxy is alpha male and mates or whatever with other (breeder?) hive. This means everyone has the chance to be the next "Crota." Maybe they are all his children and the thrall are like the larva form of the hive.

      • "Taken" refers to an entity with Oryx's powers, which normal hive never had.

Yeah I feel bad for the knight in trailer 2 of the weekly update. Knight "My king." Oryx turns around. Knight "I come with the most dire of news. Your son, prince Crota, has met his demise. From CheeseSando and a series of snickering guardians who enjoy to kneel on one another's bodies." Oryx stunned stares off with that blank look that all hive always have, except this time it's just a little extra emotionless. Knight "I'm sorry my lord, what is our plan." Oryx "we fight." Knight *spits out his Red Bull mid sip (brought to you by Red Bull and 7-11. Red Bull: it gives you wings.) Oryx "why do you insult me by spilling this Holy Nectar brought to us by 7-11 on this sacred ground" Knight "as in today? Because I have a date with Cheryl tonight and it's the 3rd date... Kind of hoping tonight we get thrall nasty." Oryx "I'll pay you overtime." Knight "but I'm salary, we don't get over-" oryx grabs his wrist and turns him into Taken. The 2 remaining Knights kneel before their Dark Ruler and ask what the plan is. Oryx sips his Red Bull (Brought to you by Red Bull and 7-11. Red Bull it gives you wings) "We're gonna get Cheese'd" This has been another Cheese Sando original. Presented to you by Red Bull and 7-11. Red Bull: It gives you wings.

        • We know that there are other gods in the hive pantheon, so perhaps the taken hive are just other gods' followers that oryx took for himself? It would be kind of interesting to see the dynamics of the hibe pantheon and how maybe they disagree on certain things, like conquering our solar system.

          • I still think that the Hive are an experimental race. Imperfect and weak. Thus they experiment on Thralls, turning them into Ogres, probably to make perfect Thralls. That plan was all going good, till Crota got spanked. Now Oryx wants it done asap and uses his own space magic to embody everyone he sees, turning them into Taken.

          • Do you know of the new strike boss, the Darkblade Alak-Hul? Apparently he has been imprisoned for resisting Oryx, so I guess all hive do not have the same ideas about what to do.

              • Like the Fallen, not all Hive i believe are "evil". They may be dark, but not of ill intent... only hostile due to the same two opposing sides of any war fight. Now Hive have also been shown to be forced to fight us. Urzok existed as an executioner... he kills Hive who refuse or fail to carry out orders. Their weapons represent pain, sorrow, fear, death, etc. Their entire structure of ranking is based on fear. Oryx, Crota, Omnigul, all have positions over the rest of the Hive that are solely based on fear. Thrall is synonymous with slave. Phogoth was chained up and tortured. See where im getting at this? Oryx doesn't care about the Hive under his command. And if he does, he becomes an embodiment of the saddness and anger and hate associated with losing them... even if he is the one responsible. To Inflict pain on the Hive....is to make them stronger. Oryx is just forcing their ways upon the rest of the races. Just my thoughts.

                • Because when they get "taken" they receive new powers and new abilities. Invisible/teleporting Thrall? Yeah, they need to burn.

                • If you watch the prologue cinematic, three hive knights literally kneel before Oryx and offer themselves. I believe becoming Taken makes them stronger, but soulless.

                  • Is it maybe that the Blood of Oryx house of the Hive sit in reserve to have the honor of being transformed, if they're needed? The other races are literally taken and forced into it?

                    • Aztec gods required rituals of horrible sacrifice to appease them. Imagine walking up the pyramid barefoot on shattered clay jars, to then have your heart cut out. Being "Taken" is equivalent.

                        • Because they're either: afraid, traitors who try to run or honored to be taken. Oryx is commanding them to march and die for his revenge. I don't know about you but if I knew I was being sent out to die because someone else was mad I'd be a little nervous.

                        • Just speculating, but he isn't a god in the literal sense. He's a mortal being, that apparently is very good at manipulating other beings, and the ones that aren't manipulated, are forced. This happens in real life, too. Xerxes, Hitler, Stalin as examples.
