For years now, Halo fans like myself have speculated on the origins of Master Chief's Spartan tag. Some say it's a biblical reference, and has something to do with John 1:17. Others say it's math related, because 7 to the 6th power is 117649.
Though here, right now, I will tell you just how the Arete Seven came up with their number.
Imagine, if you will, a younger Jason Jones, sitting at a desk somewhere in Chicago, pulling his hair out. It was almost time for Macworld 1999, and while they had their demo for the new game they were making, they needed a name for the protagonist.
Jones locked himself in his office, sitting there for hours while his Bungie cohorts decided the best way to program a reflective surface into the game. He had gone for hours without eating, drinking, or going to the bathroom. Sleep was for the weak, he thought, as he constantly suggested things and denied them to himself.
After seven days of working, and an impending police investigation on his whereabouts, Jason had accumulated two walls of ideas. He had the "Badass words" wall, and the "Numbers" wall. The Badass wall had pictures of monster trucks and professional wrestlers, while the Numbers wall had the number 7 littered all over it, in various fonts.
Meanwhile, across the building, an excited Hamilton Chu yelled in triumph as his programming team had finally figured out why the mirrors in the demo weren't reflecting properly, when he noticed his boss hadn't been in for the past week. He heard sobbing coming out from Jones's office, and he kicked down the door to save his employer from what he later reported to be what he thought were "Ninjas! Ninjas on fire!". He saw Jason in a four foot tall pile of papers, with various scratch out marks and scribbles. He asked what Jason was doing, and he pointed to the walls. "Hulk Hogan 7". "Monster Truck 7" but with a small line through the seven this time.
Jones turned red in the face and ripped out a clump of hair. "WHAT DO WE NAME HIM?!" he yelled. He proceeded to say something that could only be described with the word "blam".
Chu looked puzzled. Up until this point, he hadn't really cared about the protagonist's name. He was just the green robot super guy. He sat down and started thinking of badass things. Hours went by, and nearly forty missed calls from Nintendo, each an offer to buy Bungie. Chu stood up and yelled "SPARTAN! WE SHALL CALL HIM SPARTAN!".
Jason stood up as well, and paper bits flew everywhere. A janitor walked by and burst into tears. "YES CHU, SPARTAN WILL INDEED WORK. BUT WE NEED A NUMBER!"
The two stormed out of the office and sat down on the nearest couch, because it was the 90s and couches in offices were popular at the time. They then turned on the TV, and started channel surfing until they hit Nickelodeon. Rugrats was on, and they watched it.
Because it was the 90s.
Halfway through the Rugrats, one of the characters blurted out (quite humourously) "Eleventy Seven".
The two looked at eachother, with tears of joys in their eyes. "ELEVENTY SEVEN!" they cried out in unison. They hired some guy to say "This is Spartan One one seven", and they ran off to Macworld. It was there that they were bought by Microsoft.
For those who can't read, here's a tl;dr summary.
The Rugrats made Halo what it is today.
Posted by: Speedmachine202
Posted by: Milo2107 Spartan 117 is John 117, because john 117 was the 117th Spartan out of 300. Simple.
Yeah, but they had to pick which spartan number he would be, right?
Exactly. Which is where this comes in.
Posted by: Longsword049 if you get a caculater.. and keep multiplying by seven it eventuly reaches 117. and 343
117 is not a multiple of seven. 343 is seven squared and 2401 is seven cubed.

epic, ling lings head now ftw!

I'd enjoy it if a Bungie employee said something.
Posted by: JoelWarnke There's many other biblical references in Halo, maybe it's from the bible verse John 1:17? I should look up what that says.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Hmmmm
