The barrier blocks an area you go to in one of the strikes from TDB (don't remember the name).
Other people have mentioned the similarity between Crota's backdrop and the end of the Black Garden, but I thought the sky around Crota looked more like it was full of blood droplets.
Could just be a coincidence that the colour palette was similar.
Story-wise, Crota's End is set not on the moon but in Crota's own reality (possibly in his mind - I think the grimoire is intentionally unclear, unless I misread).
The Black Garden wasn't on Mars until after the heart was destroyed (Dinklebot says it's not on any maps of time or space), so the possibility of the Hive and Vex 'sharing' some alternate dimension isn't ruled out necessarily.

I beleive Crotas end is in his after life. Eris killed him. Then we destroy his soul in the story mode. Then we travel to the hive afterlife to make sure his soul stays banished. That's how it all seemed to play out for me.

Given the information available, I think it's fair to say that we can't draw any distinction between an afterlife or a pocket dimension as far as the Hive are concerned, but I agree with your summary. To OP, have a look at the Crota entry (Grimoire > Enemies > Exalted Hive). The end of it suggests that there could be some similarity between Hive realities and the Vex gate network. Okay, more specifically it says that there hasn't been any investigation into their similarities, but it reads like a hint to me.
