I understand that Thorn was being used as a crutch by many players and that it deserved to be looked at, and maybe Last Words range was a little too big (although I never died to a Last Word and thought it was cheap.) But in my opinion Hawkmoon was superbly balanced.
When the game first launched, it was a powerhouse with great range and good target acquisition due to the "send it' perk. Then came the hand cannon nerf of 1.1.1 and the removal of send it. Hawkmoon lost some of it's oomph but it still had hammer forged and even until now it was a very good weapon that required precise shots to get kills over other sorts of close quarters guns.
But now, with the 2.0 weapon re-balance, hand cannons as an archetype are getting nerfed. (which is weird in and of itself since arguably Thorn and maybe Last Word were the only ones that were overpowered.) Which means the base stats of all hand cannons are being reduced. You're losing range, ADS precision and close quarters hip fire capabilities. Add to that Hawkmoon losing it's only real "exotic" ability of being able to one shot once every trillion bullets and you're left with weapon that has nothing really exotic about. It's losing its ability to one shot and is also getting its chance of procing holding aces lowered with the addition of two bullets in the chamber...
What you're left with is a gun with slightly higher base stats then other hand cannons and that's about it. Sure you'll proc holding aces once in a while and get slightly higher (but nerfed by 3% even still) bullet damage, but considering that both ADS and hipfire are being nerfed, if you miss your precision damage, then you're essentially getting nothing too special.
From the weekly update it seems that Bungie is going to make hand cannons into the new auto rifles. I foresee everyone moving away from HCs and moving onto pulse rifles or scout rifles which even according to Bungie will perform about as well as HC's but at a greater distance. It's a shame that all HC's are getting nerfed like Red Hand and Fulcrum, just because people started to overuse Thorn. It's an even bigger shame that Hawkmoon is going to be affected by this nerf and basically have nothing exotic about it anymore. Maybe the 3.0 weapon re-balance will look more into buffing and nerfing individual HC's instead of just blanket nerfing the entire archetype.
Also what the hell... way to make Black Hammer useless now... It was already a gun that required precision to utilize the perk, and now they're essentially making it trash... A slightly buffed triple tap perk...
And depending on how much they're nerfing Gjallarhorn's wolf pack rounds, it might be in the same camp as Hawkmoon... Take away the one thing that makes that rocket exotic... Not that it's going to be bad. I'm sure it'll still do more damage then most other rockets, but this mostly seems like an excessive nerf. Just because people who don't have it complain a bunch doesn't mean people who do should lose out on it. Not all of us are a-holes who deny people playing with us just because they don't have the gun.
EDIT: For the record, I'm not saying that Hawkmoon is suddenly going to be trash. It just seems to be losing that "exotic" pizzaz that it once had. Won't know for sure until we give it a try post patch, but this is just my initial impressions. It's the same way as how I think that Suros is still a decent AR even post patch, but that is a testament to how powerful of an AR it was prepatch.
