In trials their connection will fluctuate from green bar to red bar and back. A stable red bar is just bad connection.

    • Usually cheaters do things to make it obvious. Like sometimes I've had lagswitchers dance in front of me, immune to my bullets only to rek me and move along.

I do not know if there is a definitive and comprehensive way to differentiate between players having bad connections and deliberate cheaters. However, if you cannot pick-up ammo or revive a dead teammate, then you are definitely being cheated! I think the most obvious indicator is how the other players behave, e.g., if they just stand in one spot waiting for the capture point and don't even try to fight, then I consider them to be knowingly cheating. Some players even make posts bragging about how well, and how easily, they can cheat this game! The reality is that these cheaters are not the ones at which we should be angry! Bungie-Vision is where our angst should be directed, since they should have known that this would happen when they made the decision for destiny to be P2P- rather than server-hosted gameplay. Even after making the original decision to place profit well-above the quality and integrity of the gameplay, which is actually understandable from a business perspective, they then made PVP the primary focus of endgame content in HOW, which is either a reflection of utter stupidity about their own industry (not likely), or deliberately providing an inferior product for that meta in order to attract new customers regardless of the known potentials for abuse, e.g., Blam our existing customers if it will bring us new ones!

      • One rough indication would be how well they are doing. Chances are if they're cheating, they'll be doing extremely well. When you're genuinely experiencing connection issues, it is hard to perform well.

      • Someone cheating will pretty much have god mode the whole game. Someone actually lagging may seem to teleport now and then when you are shooting at them. Other times shots may not register when you hit them. Some times it takes 3-4 bullets before you start to see them take damage. But someone lagging will die, someone cheating will not. The most common issue I see is a real delay when killing a lagger. For instance, shot gunning someone in the face only to have them kill you back. When you are dead you see them fall over and then get credit for the kill. Another good indication someone is cheating is when they do not take any damage but they stand there waving and dancing. I've also seen people lagswitch in iron banner just so they can stand there in the match and not do a single thing. If they win they win, if they lose they get the medallion.
