Taken King chapter 6

Three massive Hive ships sat against the eerie purple backdrop of the Reef, boxing us in .Echo got us moving just in time to avoid two blasts of energy from one of the ships. I sat down and took the controls as one of the squads of Awoken fighters flew past. “Petra!” I called over the comm, “How are we getting out of here?” “Fighters are protecting the transports,” she replied, “you two are gonna have to get us out, fast.” “Copy,” said Sierra, “try and hit the middle ship.” I swung the ship around and came at the center ship, full speed, guns blazing. As I sped towards the battleship, its massive central gun began to charge with energy. At the last second before it returned fire, I pulled off, looping back around to make another run. Two Awoken fighters flew past me, I watched them just long enough to see them hit by a shot from one of the hive ships. The two fighters broke into a million tiny pieces. No explosion, no fire, they just shattered, killing the pilots instantly in the cold vacuum of space. Sierra’s voice broke me out of the thought. “I didn’t seem to do anything to them, you?” “Nothing, guns aren’t doing a thing.” “Neither are rockets.” Sierra responded, “We’re gonna have to find another way to take this thing down.” “Well hurry,” Petra interjected, “the transports are taking fire.” Four Awoken fighters shot past, straight at the Hive battleship. It fired a single blast at the group, disintegrating one, and setting the other three off course, moments later smashing into the hull of the much larger ship. I pulled my own ship into a roll to evade the same blast. “Sierra,” I called, “fall back to the transports, draw some fire off of them.” “Inbound.” She agreed. Turning to face the group of ships on the far side of the battlefield, I got a good look at the Awoken transports. They were essentially long tubes with three wings and a cluster of engines at the back end. A volley of shots flew in front of me, I banked steep to my right to avoid them, then continued towards the other ships. One of the Hive ship’s blasts found its mark on a transport. The ships kinetic barriers overloaded in a single shot and burst outward, releasing the energy with explosive force. Immediately afterward, a second shot hit the transport, ripping it in two. “No! Damn!” Petra yelled over the comm, “Hurry, Grant. Figure something out before we all die out here.” I already had. “Sierra,” I said as I reached the two remaining transports, and turned back towards the Hive ship, “I’ve got a plan to take this thing down. Cover.” Sierra’s High Water pulled up beside me and opened fire on the smaller, point defense turrets. We continued forward, straight toward the main gun. “Break, now.” I said to Sierra. She complied, splitting off from me. “Whatever, you’re doing,” she started, “It better work. Oryx’ll be even more pissed if you die like this.” I smiled. What I was about to do would probably kill me. I knew that. But I had to do it, it was the only option. “Echo,” I said as the battleship began to charge another shot, “Boost the engines fifty percent, all other power to forward facing barriers.” “What? You won’t be able to shoot-” “Trust me.” I demanded. We didn’t have time to debate this. Echo knew that just as well as I did. My ship sped forward, directly at the charging cannon. Moments before we collided with the battleship, the cannon fired. The massive blast of energy hit our kinetic barriers head on. In the same instant, the barriers overloaded, releasing a massive burst of energy ahead of us. Right into the Hive ship. The hull of the ship ruptured, punching a hole straight through. “WHOOO!” I shouted as my ship came clean out the other side. Behind us the huge ship was torn in two from damage to the superstructure and explosive decompression. “Did we really just-” Echo was cut off by Petra, equally ecstatic, calling, “Go, go, go. Now!” I looked back to see the Awoken transports and fighters warping through the widening gap between the two drifting halves of the Hive battleship that would join the other wrecks here in the Reef. “That scared the hell out of me,” Sierra said in a sigh of relief, “but it was pretty amazing.” She finished as she too warped off to the Tower. “It was pretty cool, wasn’t it?” I said to Echo as we followed suit with the rest of the ships.
