Matchmaking in trials of Osiris just isn't a good idea. I've been playing elimination mode, and that has matchmaking, and there are problems I notice.
1. There is very little team play, as nobody has played with each other before. Trials is meant to be a team event and it's supposed to be that communication is the key element to winning but communicating doesn't exist in matchmaking.
2. You can get matched up with bad teammates and so you are almost going 3v1 and while some people are good enough to win that, it's very unlikely that you will win in that case, and so you're not going to get the rewards and therefor it's pointless to even play the trials.
3. If you are facing a team of randoms, as in they used matchmaking while you are with a team of your friends you are basically getting a free win, and so it's easier to go 9-0, making it less special and the trials easier. It's supposed to be the hardest PvP event but this would take away from it. I know people might comment "what if I just want to play trials without worrying about winning or whatever, I just want to participate", well that makes the trials easier for others and almost ruins what makes it special.
If you want matchmaking play elimination, it's that simple.
I do however agree with optional matchmaking for nightfalls, as working with a team of randoms isn't terrible in nightfalls, although you can run into the trolls, or the people who just go afk and wait for you to do the work, or the guy who runs ahead and then dies so that the nightfall ends, but I still think it would be worth it.
