Is there a way to check which exotics i may still be missing?

Very easily, yes; look up a list of exotics and use your eyes and brain in conjunction to check which ones exist in your arsenal and which ones don't.

If it's weapons you could check your grimoire to see which ones you don't have or don't have kills with. For armour I don't think there is a way
