Why NOT allowing Year 1 gear to be upgraded would be a bad move.

Think about it; what logical game company would take an entire year's worth of content (from a game that seems to pride itself on it's breadth of content, mind you), and invalidate it in one fell swoop? On the PvE side- If Year 1 gear was left behind, what reasons would new players have to play Crota's End? What about VoG? Let's be honest, as fun as the Raids can be, the vast majority of players wouldn't touch them if the rewards weren't viable. Even if you ignore the significance of generic Vanguard/Crucible gear, you CANNOT deny the importance of Raids to the longevity of Destiny, and you can bet your butt Bungie won't, either. On the PvP side- The only events where level matters are also the only events that give out Endgame-equivalent gear. These events are obviously going to continue to exist in Destiny's future, and the rewards therein would also logically scale to future level caps. As such, It would be strange if Bungie didn't have upgrade paths for gear earned through those avenues, as that would only serve to invalidate all the effort players put in to earn them, which would kinda ruin their status as "Trophy" weapons/armor. Imagine if your beloved 'Adept' weapons from Trials had to be re-earned? NO THANKS. And I think it would piss off, or at least alienate a large portion of the playerbase if only specific gear from each DLC era was upgradable, for obvious reasons, so it seems safe to assume that, if "Endgame" gear from both PvE and PvP will be upgradable (and I think it will, as I've attempted to show above), then ALL gear would, as well. Just my Two Cents. :P It'd be nice if Bungie would just let us know what's going on, though. I get that TTK is still heavily in development, but even just a small comment on their intentions would be nice. :S EDIT- People keep making WoW comparisons, but I don't think the two games are even comparable-
In WOW, old gear might become outdated for max-level players, but very much unlike Destiny, new players still have to level up through every previous level-cap, so older gear doesn't become obsolete, it simply retains it natural placement in the progression of the game, for ALL players. In Destiny, however, players can reach close to max-level without EVER touching any of the older content, given the way Vendor/Crucible gear is designed. Therefore, if old content gets left behind, it becomes completely obsolete for the entire player base, ESPECIALLY new players. That sounds like the worst marketing plan EVER, as far as advertising to new players goes.
EDIT 2- People are also bringing up the issue of getting people to chase new gear in future DLC (which Bungie is obviously concerned with). Well, I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I ascended all of my favorite Vanilla/TDB gear within the first week of HoW. And you know what? I still wanted the new gear! Bungie did a great job of making the new HoW gear desirable, both cosmetically and functionally (DAT OSIRIS GEAR, THO), and that alone made me want them. It had NOTHING to do with them making my old gear outdated, and I think that's exactly how they should continue to design this game. As long as new gear is different, I think people will want it, regardless of whether or not it's "better." :) EDIT 3- After reading the newest Weekly Update, I'm even more convinced that Bungie should- and will- continue to let older gear be upgraded. The new direction that weapons are going in is incredibly refreshing and new, very much distinct from the current gear set. Regardless of whether or not these new weapons have any damage increase over current gear, the new foundry archetypes are going to create a massive draw for serious and casual players, alike.

  • At a bare minimum they need to allow you to change gear cosmetics. Armor wise I usually just choose what I think looks good and make it work with etheric light. I don't want to go back to every guardian looking the same. I want the old gear I've obtained to matter even if only cosmetically. Ideally it'd be both cosmetic and still be good. They must keep a system like etheric light to keep the game diverse.

  • I feel like they should only allow you to upgrade old weapons after completing the raid. They could also implement a new kind of etheric light that is only available as a reward for completing the raid that let's you upgrade one legendary at a time. I don't see why they would make all weapons obsolete again unless they want the community in a riot.

  • You're wrong, raids are not important to the longevity of Destiny. And that's the problem, the last two raids SHOULD be important to its longevity Bungie took the road of making sure that new players could get on the level of longer term players as fast as possible. Which is a ridiculous idea in a game that is meant to be a 10 year saga. What has happened is this; Yes, people might stay with it it for 10 years. But not the way bungie envisioned. I'm a day one player, and since about 3 weeks after HoW dropped I log on maybe twice a week now. Tuesday's Wednesdays until I have all nightfalls weeklies and raids done. Raids why? Vog because it's fun and crota cos I'm still chasing the hawkmoon. Poe no thanks, I find it tedious, no, mind numbingly boring. There's nothing to chase anymore. I had all crota gear after probably 20 to 30 completions, max. Most of them were just chasing the crux. Vog I only finished my gear collection last week, the Timepiece. There has been a constant progresssion of making it easier to get the most desirable gear in Destiny. Bungie thinks they are making it more desirable to newcomers. But in 3 or 4 months those newcomers will be just as jaded as us day oners. Bungies vision for Destiny is one of two things. It's either incredibly naive and shortsighted, or completely oblivious and hapless. I don't know which one is better.

You can look at this video game like this - they made weapons and armor for year one, game one. Now game 2, year 2 has its own weapons and armor. Bungie's job is to make more weapons and armor that you can use to take the place of old ones. It's newbies decision to go through the game like we did, not ours, not bungie's. If they want to skip it, it's their decision and bungie's to supply them with ways to. Like vanguard armor. They still have to go through the story modes to get other things though. The HOW etheric light plan is just temporary plan to me, because the max level difference was small, let people use their old weapons and armor, and they wanted people to play POE quick. Looking at the amount content coming, bungie needs to go a different direction. That entitles them to either freeze the current equip or make us relevel the year one stuff a certain way that allows us to keep our perks through leveling it up and making the game last. Everybody is going have a lot of etheric light so that's out the window. Bungie is kinda trap right now with this part of the game. The committee should know whatever is coming, it's going to have its good and it's bad.

Each weapon should have damage tiers. At Tier 1, your weapon is capable of doing 50% max damage with Tier 2 - 75%, Tier 3 - 100% The max applicable damage is already determined by your Light level and the structure was already in place on weapons before 1.2.0 They made the mistake of not making the numerical value of a weapon's max applicable damage an automatically sliding variable that changes with each Light level upgrade beyond the 1.0 build - and lack the creativity they had with the OG dev team to create equally desirable weapons with each DLC.

I would actually be happier if they did not allow all that gear to be upgraded BUT created all new weapon and gear sets for the year one raids and upped the raid levels. Same goes for all new PoE, ToO, and IB weapons and gear sets. If that's what they did...the start of year two would actually have tons of content to play and many different ways to reach max level.

  • Surely it would just make the first 2 expansions, vog and any strike playlist apart from the new one redundant if they won't be dropping new guns with the new damage cap. So we will get an expansion that makes the little content pool that is there even shallower? Or do they do away with all the old weapons from strike playlists?

  • If they make old raid gear useless, they will completely invalidate hundreds of player hours, our money spent on expansions, and the time we took the level everything up. That said, Bungie has continued to push us to make tough decisions. This may another time where we will be pushed to move on to new weapons. I will still keep some of my old weapons for the memories.

  • They could always come up with a new etheric light (etheric 2.0) and make it only obtainable on higher level quests. That way if you wanted to ascend old gear, you'd first have to get the new gear to even complete the higher level quests. And with limited vault space, you'd have to be very selective about what you'll level up.

Pretty sure old gear will be still be in the game, will they be viable for the new content? Most likely not, I see it as we see rare gear today, in the game but not viable weapon/armor for current content. They put the "expansion 1" and "expansion 2" logos on the gear for a reason, so that future players will know where in the Destiny timeline that piece of gear came from. That's my theory.

    • I think they only did that to please us with HoW because there was no raid. Now that a raid is coming, it has to go back to the old way of leveling where you're 2 levels below hard mode raid (in this case oryx).

    • You also have to think about it in terms of development resources and time. It took Bungie SIGNIFICANT investment to make all year one content. The design, the mechanics, the rebalancing, the data analytics, the bug fixes, the community response... the list goes on. Why would they invalidate and completely trash ALL of that? Because it is a FACT that people will NOT play year one activities anymore if they reward useless, outclassed gear and weapons. Take House of Wolves for example. Why in the hell would they spend all those resources on the new activities, weapons, upgrade path, etc just to make them completely obsolete in a couple months? It just doesn't make sense.

      • Think about this: what's the point in making these nerfs to all the weapons if they are not viable in year two, seeing as it comes out just before year 2 begins

            • Why make year 2 stuff then if everyone is going to ascend their current stuff. If there was no ascending HOW weapons would be better and everything else stuck at 331. They allowed it for HOW and everyone complained that the new stuff wasn't better. They can't win whatever choice is made, some will say I wanna ascend some will say new better weapons.

            • They almost have to let you keep stuff, I mean at least exotics. Xbox users won't get the year one exclusives until TTK drops so if they can't upgrade then they are obsolete? I personally think the reason for not giving us larger vaults is to make us decide what gear gets ascended... You can keep all you old shit but.... You won't have room for any new shit. You can fill your vault with new shit, but you will have to make tough calls as to what to delete. I suggest an exotic vault and then a legendary/rare etc vault. I want to be the one to decide what weapons I delete forever versus which ones I keep.

            • No thanks. I can't remember the last time I ever got excited from a drop. Ever. After receiving fatebringer, black hammer, ghorn, ect. There has been nothing in the game powerful enough to out gun those guns. We should have to obtain new guns.
