Thorn, and The Last Word are Overpowered, But it Isn't Their Fault

The Thorn and The Last Word are considered the most overpowered guns in the game, however even if they were nerfed to fit their intended roles, they will still be widely used in the crucible. The simple reason is the crucible itself favors mid to close range weapons. Here are a list of weapon types that are optimal in these ranges. Note this is dealing with primary weapons only, and operates under the assumption that the next balance patch balances the crucible properly. This is by no means a proposed nerf, just analyzing factors that contribute to why they are so overpowered. Legend: Impact-Weapon Type. For example: 2-Auto Rifles. Long: 61-Scout Rifles, Hawkmoon Mid-Long: 61-Scout Rifles, 94-Hand Cannons, 48-Scout Rifles, 30-Pulse Rifles, Hawkmoon Mid: 81-Hand Cannons, 48-Scout Rifles, 68-Hand Cannons, 30-Pulse Rifles, 28-Auto Rifles Mid-Close: 68-Hand Cannons, 38-Scout Rifle, 14-Pulse Rifle, 8-Auto Rifle, 7-Pulse Rifles Close: The Last Word, 4-Pulse Rifles, 2-Auto Rifles. Thorn is a 68 Hand Cannon, meaning its optimal range is mid and mid-close. So any map whose engagements consist of mid range encounters favors Thorn automatically. Lets see how many crucible maps in Control and Clash, which make up meta crucible, consist of what map types. Note: This discusses the majority of sight lines, not if they are included. There are few maps were the majority of sight lines are in TLW hipfire range. Long: 1 Mid-Long: 2 Mid: 9 Mid-Close: 4 Close: 1 As you can see about 3/4 of the maps in Destiny Crucible operate at Thorn's optimal range, meaning that this gun, already overpowered, is always running in its ideal map type. The Last Word is glitched, allowing it to run outside of its intended range, and as it is right now it also fits into mid-close range maps, about 1/3 of the possible maps. These two guns are overpowered, that is undeniable, but the fact of the matter is their optimal ranges are what most Destiny Maps are built at. All this information is well and good, but what can be done about it? After a proper balancing patch, TTK needs to include more mid-long and long range maps in standard crucible. As it stands the 4 maps in the E3 build have 3 in Thorn's optimal range, meaning the unless more maps are added, the crucible will still be geared towards mid ranged weapons. Bungie can't fix this problem with only a balancing patch, the game itself needs to be more inclusive to more weapon types. Note: A brief touch on Hawkmoon. Hawkmoon has a luck based opportunity of a two shot kill, so its dps is hard to calculate. However it fits into Long, Mid-Long, and Mid, about 70% of map types. In 3 shot situations, it has dps compared to others in those classes, but due to the two shot kills, many have found it overpowered. When the exotic perk interferes, it is powerful, otherwise it is a super accurate hand cannon. So long as its 3 shot ttk doesn't exceed that of a 30-Pulse Rifle or a 61-Scout Rifle, which it doesn't, it isn't overpowered as it can't reliably or predictably give those 2 shot kills. Like someone getting their 3rd Gjallarhorn when their friend hasn't gotten one, it isn't the games fault, it is just luck. Hawkmoon is a slot machine gun, so naturally, some people win more than others, making the gun seem overpowered.

    • What if they bought back the original vax and suros. Vex with crit 56 45 body and 56 mag. And the same for suros then people wouldnt think that thorn is op because the vex and suros apparently were.

      • The only thing they need to change on the last word would be to shorten the range just a little and get rid of the one 111 damage that happens sometimes.

      • For once someone points out the real problem: Map size, thank you! Though the other two problems are that Last Word's range is more than what it says(and the extra damage being applied while ADS glitch), and Thorn has the highest fie rate and can guarantee a 2-3 shot kill because of the DoT(poison).

        • https://www.bungie.net/pubassets/35453/iron_banner_graph.jpg Here is a graph that Bungie themselves made. It is from one of the updates just before the major weapon "rebalance". If you notice the Suros was the most used weapon. When they reduced the damage by 2.7% (per Bungie) and ended up messing with the Vex "by accident" that only leaves two weapons (one weapon type) on the top of the chart with very few contenders. The only reason you see pulse rifles in pvp currently is because of the buff they recieved. The reason that Thorn and TLW is running wild in pvp is because they took away one of the most common weapon types that most people used to out gun handcannons and didnt bother to adjust anything to correct this issue!

        • You have some very interesting points. I've intuitively talked about how the scales of PvP and PvE are different, so I'm glad to see the actual numbers that show most of crucible is really in the 'mid' range, which is fairly close range in PvE. This seems like another great reason to separate out the stats for PvP and PvE, so that weapons can be balanced for ranges in PvE and PvP. Though with them mixed as they are, you get terribly unbalanced PvP and certain weapon types that are useless in PvE.

        • Well no matter how you put it thirn is currently used as a sniper which is not mid range and its fire rate is incredibly overpowered i mean that it has damage resembling a jewel of osiris type hand cannon yet it still firea atleast twice as and has DoT for days

Personally I don't care much for "big maps". I played combined arms a couple times and it was a very boring game. Walking around looking for enemies to shoot, only to get sniped from across the map as soon as you're slightly out in the open. When maps are bigger, then people just sit and snipe, which I personally do not enjoy. However, I'm not opposed to having more big maps, but I think they need to stay in a separate playlist so that people that like to play that way can choose to play there. Whereas others that prefer the mid size maps that cater to more action can play in the playlist that supports that.

Agreed. The map design promotes to use certain weapons in most cases. But still thorns and tlws ttk is just ridiculous. In a straight gunfight these guns deal fatal damage in a time, a common human beeing couldnt even react to. This needs to be changed. In addition to more long range maps.

          • Well considering your 61 scout is long range and has less range than thorn still. It should look like this Long:thorn Mid:thorn Mid-short:thorn/TLW Short:thorn/TLW

            • Any weapon is op in the right hands, most people can't hit shit anyways let alone land consecutive headshot with a hand cannon in PVP. I don't think thorn is op. Just many people using it at once so it's seems op. And then some guys are just boss at PVP.

              • Even if thorn is optimal at close-mid range, send it allows it to be used as a short range scout rifle. It still is able to 2 shot accross many maps.

              • Look, I'll be honest, I didn't even read your post. Let me just say... Luke Smith (and thus Bungie) know these weapons are OP. They know and are OK with it. From the Kotaku interview: "On Thorn Schreier: Are you gonna nerf Thorn? Smith: So one of the things that’s really good about having a live game that we’re able to update a bunch is that we have this freedom that allows us to balance and bring into style and bring out of style different weapons. We want to have different weapons that have different seasons and ages and, you know, ‘This was the time when X was really powerful.’ When the game shipped, October last year, the Regime, SUROS. Now SUROS is but a memory. So I think that a bunch of weapons are on their own journey, and they’re all gonna get their time in the sun." As you can see, they are perfectly happy to have weapons that "get their time in the sun" (aka being OP). I dont agree with this, not even a little bit and think it's -blam!-ing stupid. They should strive to have some form of parity within the crusible (I know not possible but they need to try.) • One thing that is rarely mentioned as a negative to thorn is that it gives itself away. Dot is great, but people don't stay and fight. They often survive when they would have kept up the fight against a hawkmoon and suffered the headshot consequences. I get more kills with other hand canons like hawkmoon than thorn. If gets any nerf then it will fall off very quickly.

                  • I can agree about thorn but the kick on last word, regardless of its range, throws off the accuracy of the gun making it unreliable. Otherwise I can totally agree.

                          • Yeah they do shoot a long range but that isn't the problem on any of them. The real problem is their damage. When a gun reliably fires 1 shot that makes every other gun have to shoot 2-4 rounds just to match it, and does it faster. You got a pretty big problem. Ranging a gun out isn't going to stop the fact it will murder you in .36 seconds. Lethal damage in .36 seconds is absurd no matter what range you are at. It really just causes playability issues with weapons more then anything at this point. Now if they just adjusted them damage wise a little bit you would see the most actual change while still keeping them viable.
