Back in 2007, Runescape. There was so much to do and things to see. Quests were a huge part in that.
The Far Cry games are pretty amusing, but the enemies encountered are roughly the same in every location.
The Elder Scrolls Series had enemy diversity, different architecture, and different npc's.
The Fallout games are awesome as balls, but they are rather limited Open Worlds; since often or not you're on a quest/mission when you discover new zones/locations.
Why is Red Dead Redemption not included, the F**king Undead Nightmare dlc was the tits!
I really can't decide, I've put so many hours into these games that choosing one over the other is too much.

Runescape took up a lot of my childhood and I'm kind of pissed that I let that happen. The little me loved it way too much. It would literally drive me to fight with my parents over play time.

Runescape was possibly the first MMO that was addictive as world of Warcraft, and enter it was free

This is definitely delayed, but I bought membership for Runescape as soon as I could. I always had something new to discover when I went questing and general exploration. But eventually I began to lag on the grinding. I quickly discovered that grinding provided no enjoyment and this grindfest eventually led me to quit Runescape forever.
