We all know that cheating is running rampant in PvP these days. But, just because you shoot a guy and he doesn't die immediately, doesn't mean that he is cheating.
You'll know a lag switcher by 3 telltale signs:
1) They don't take any damage at all. As in, none. You shotty them and you don't even get that "late" kill after you're dead. They just keep running.
2) They continue to play normally. This is key. If you shotgun a guy and he then kills you, runs around a corner, and jumps (or something similar), you're seeing lag switching. If he takes no damage, but then runs straight into a wall for 30 seconds, he's lagged out himself (likely cursing at his TV).
3) You cannot interact with the environment. This is the best way to tell. Trying to pick up ammo and it won't let you? Trying to open a door and it won't open? Yup, someone somewhere is cheating in your match.
All 3 may not happen. And, they may not all be the same thing (still haven't figured out how switching prevents doors from opening up). But, they are all intentional manipulations of the game and/or connections to provide a person with an unfair advantage.
So, unless someone is doing these things, please don't report them. If Bungie gets flooded with reports of people with bad connections as "cheaters", then they have less time to focus on the real cheaters.
FYI - if you want to know what true lag switching looks like, here it is. https://vid.me/xkRK
Know of any other 100% ways to tell that someone is or isn't cheating? Please let us know! I'm not a computer guy, so I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything about this.
edit - Quick explanation on the physical differences between "lag" and "lag switch". Pretend that your bullet is the actual information traveling over the internet. You shoot your bullet, it leaves your console, goes through your modem, across the internet, into that other guy's modem, then into his console. The bullet hits his character inside his console, which then registers a hit and sends information to everyone else saying, "I'm dead".
If you are "lagging", then the bullets leaving your machine are getting interrupted, are going slow, etc. This means that you are having trouble shooting other people. Also, the bullets coming into your machine are getting interrupted, going slow, etc. This means that, from everyone else's perspective, you are running around the map immune to fire.
"Lag switching" is the intentional interruption of ONLY the upload part of your connection. When this happens, the lagger can technically still take damage. But, because he his moving around, but not sending info on where he's moving to you, you don't know where he really is. He will shoot you, and that "bullet" (which has a time stamp showing when it was shot) will be waiting for when he turns his switch back on. When he does it, that bullet travels to your console, asks, "Were you in the path of this bullet when it was fired? Yes? OK, you're dead."
Like quadracer said below, if you think they are really lag switching, look at their stats. If they are losing, they're DEFINITELY not lag switching (or, they suck at life anyway). If they are winning, they "may" be lag switching. Look at their movements and apply the 3 questions above.

I used to think the difference would be pretty obvious but apparently it's not. I ran into a fireteam of clanmates in IB while I was undergoing a period of very bad connection. Most of the time it was pretty disadvantageous to me as I was trading kills with people even though I really should've killed them first by a large margin. However, after the match one of them posted a short clip of me tanking a Golden Gun shot in our WhatsApp group. From my POV it seemed like the shot missed me, but apparently from his POV it hit me dead on but I proceeded to gun him down as if nothing happened. So, maybe the difference really isn't that clear cut.

I've been in matches where doors don't open and I can't pick up special crates but they were just regular skirm matches and I still ended up winning. Still a lag switch or just lag on my end?

1 ReplyGood post this community needs more of this, thanks
-
2 RepliesHow's this? Please excuse my use of thorn, things got bad for this match
-
2 RepliesOhhh like when the heavy box for your team is glitched for like 20 seconds after heavy spawns so you're all mashing X while the other team comes running up, nukes you with heavy, then gets all the ammo no prob.

2 RepliesEdited by Sovereign Man: 7/6/2015 3:44:24 PMHere's another 100% sure way to tell if they're cheating: If they send you a message informing you that they're cheating and then proceed to cheat, you know that cheating is occurring.

7 RepliesEdited by njl4515: 7/6/2015 3:48:47 PMThis is a bad SGA. Number 3 will only happen if they are the host. So that isn't a telltale sign at all. If the host is lagging badly, you won't be able to pick up ammo, lag switch or not. They CAN also die, if you attack them at the time they have restored their network connection. The biggest telltale sign is repeated movements--- many times, lag switchers will look like they are repeating the same movement over and over again before they snap back into action and kill everything. Legitimate laggers will look like they are moving randomly throughout the arena. AND REMEMBER: The report function can be used for 'bad conection' as well as 'cheating.' You can report someone lagging REALLY bad but don't use the cheating function unless you are sure they are lag switching.

Dancing in a control point or sitting on the ground, immune then kills all attackers-> cheat You survive 3 point blank shotgun blasts to the head with 365 Found Verdict, no damage -> cheat Teleport and kill 2 opponents at the same time on opposite sides of the map-> cheat You blink strike two different opponents at the exact same time-> cheat Your green connection turns red every time you attack or are attacked-> cheat. I still get killed when my connection goes red, you can't-> cheat You run through a Nova Bomb and 3 proximity rockets to blade dance me in midair -> cheat! I nova bomb you in your bubble, you are quite dead and resurrect-> blatant cheat Titan! This is not a court. I don't have to prove you cheated. If I know enough to play Destiny I know enough to spot cheating. It is not lag, that is random, this is perfectly timed, it is cheating... Nothing will be done about it. Bungie wants its revenue too much to make real changes and banning, permanent. Live with the cheating or don't play PVP... Bless the ability to record clips and review. Some of the crap is so blatant, it is amusing. They don't even care to be discrete anymore. One IB match we were down 18K:2K. Could not harm 5/6 opponents. Blade dancers were useless, nova bombs a joke and fist of havoc a tease. I would suicide and change camera to record the other efforts to cause any damage. They sat on control points smoking joints and laughing. Dancing and other things. It was so pathetic. We laughed as we each reported and blocked everyone on the opponent team who was immune (5/6). One player was not cheating. He left them, probably disgusted and forfeited his guaranteed win. I stuck it out but in the end, they won, couldn't lose, but win what? Rewards were blue! I laughed. Cheating in a video game, real men!!!

I had an instance last night in trials where one person went red bar in round 3. Turned into god mode. Then the whole lobby went red bar at the end of the round. It kicked me out of the match then the next round the whole lobby went back to green. That to me is lag switching.
-
I had a match where I had a bad connection (start of IB, that seemed to be almost universal). I had one match where I would shoot people 3-4 times in the face before they would return fire:.. Even though they were looking right at me. I felt bad about raking that match... But the next game the lag gods made it up to me ;)
-
Your flat out wrong
-
4 RepliesYeah I got a msg accusing me of lag switching when it was just my red bar. I have good Internet just sometimes I redbar.
-
That's why I can never pick up any ammo
-
1 ReplyI have played a lot of ToO. Only seen legit lag switching once.
-
The other thing is when you go 3-0 on a team and round 4 they start going from green to red whenever you are in a gun fight.
-
Awesome post.
-
2 RepliesMakes me laugh when people say "but your poor connection helps you!" Nope! I'm just getting shot through walls and unable to hit a Damn thing. Gotta love those post mortem melees.
-
Very informative. BUMP!

Oh, wanted to say one other thing. If you see someone lagging (legit, or switching), don't waste ammo on them. Either way, you won't be damaging them and just wasting your own ammo. If it's legit lag, they will eventually die when their connection comes back. If it's switching, then they won't die at all. But, either way, shooting them with 20 shotgun rounds won't help. When I see someone that I think is lagging (not switching), I'll call it out to my teammates. "Titan with the airplane wings (insert name here) is near the special on B. Lagging. Ignore him." That way no one else will waste ammo or get spooked when they see red on their radar. In fact, when I see regular lag, I kinda like it. Because they are having as much trouble DOING damage to me as I have in dealing it out to them, it means that we're effectively dealing with a 6v5 scenario. One person on their team is incapacitated for at least a few seconds. It's not a huge advantage, but it's something.

1 Replythanks for this. about time someone put this up. I just wish Bungie would put out an official statement on the symptoms between lag and lag switching. I think it would be beneficial to the player base and free up time for Bungie looking through false positive reports.
-
I get the #3 thingy when I play with one of my friends. He is not lagswitching, doe. Just a ba connection.
-
I've had it to where I was frozen but could be killed or I couldn't even spawn
-
3 RepliesEdited by doomshaman: 7/6/2015 5:01:08 PMI report players with red bars and the ones that do not behave normally, hit detection, killing around the corners, teleporting or such. The problem it's not only lag switches but any deliberate lagging like band hogging and so on. The PvP it's plagued and there is no way to tell them apart for sure so report anything suspicious.
-
1 ReplyEasiest way to tell, look at their score. If theyre killing shit and not dying then theyre cheating but if theyre at the bottom chances are theyre lagging. I have a shitty connection and have done pretty much everything you listed. Sometimes doors wont open, cant pick up ammo, and ill shoot people for days and then see them 15ft away shooting at where i probably am on their screen
-
3 RepliesNotice this when i ran into my first in trials of osiris, team kept saying report them but i seen this before in the first days of destiny. However i ran into a team that was lag switching, one was a ice breaker user who had his back till the sun and no matter how many times we shot him he wouldnt die but we poke our head out for two long and we would die, no headshots either, you get that audible noise it was body shot but we died as if we got shot twice. His team mates would run in shotgunning, we killed them when they switch back in and could die with traps and fist of panics, this is why i stop doing trials of osiris.

1 ReplyI don't have the greatest connection, it usually works but I often lag out. So I was playing an iron banner match and I started to lag out pretty bad the whole match. I couldn't do much in terms of killing others. I think I ended the game with 4 kills and 15 deaths and we lost the game. I then got a message saying " I'm going to post videos all over reddit of you lag switching so everyone reports you and you get banned" I thought to myself, did this dude not see my stats? Seriously, if I was lag switching wouldn't it be to my advantage?
