Disclaimer: not a nerf or complaining post. Just trying to find a way to make high impact shotties more balanced at longer ranges.
Shotguns work too well and that has led to a huge majority of players using them. How to balance them effectively is now an issue. A nerf to one aspect of shotguns could make certain archetypes of shotguns unusable. If you have other suggestions leave a reply.
Edit1: over a 100 replies nice, also I'm not complaining about getting killed by shotguns; I am trying to find a way to balance shotguns in accordance to other weapon types through discussion.
Edit2: I want them to be useable and fun in PvE and also not nerfed to heck. The problem with shotties is their time to kill at longer ranges. The time to kill with a party crasher or felwinters is instantaneous at too long a distance because of certain perks.
Summary: time to kill needs a steadier drop off as range increases. Mainly with low fire rate shotguns.
Well it's been fun and I'm glad I got to discuss how to make shotguns fun and competitive, but not as insane as they can be now. To those who wanted to discuss and debate it was great, but getting into arguments with some close minded people was not. Have fun ü

Nothing wrong with shotguns, working as intended. What other gun would you use anyway? A fusion rifle? A sniper rifle? Current maps and the way people have evolved their play style renders these other 2 useless. Nerfing shotguns won't mean people running fusion rifles or snipers more in Crucible. Your problem is and this goers for a lot of people complaining about shotguns is that you suck at switching to them. anticipating them or firing them quick enough. In one of your edits you say that Felwinter kills at too long a range due to its perks? So is it the gun or the perk?

But bungie forums wouldn't own up to that as 70% of it's community main hunter with 1.3 kd. lol.

2 RepliesThe fix they did for shotguns a while ago didn't fix much of anything because right after they made it so their range was less effective, they came around with HoW which added in Ranged shotguns. Added with the reroll system people can roll for their one hit kill babies all day once they find their niche shotgun. Weither it's one that reduces the spread of the bullet to focus on one point, range finder for extra range, and so on.

How many nerfs will it take to make you happy? They've been nerfed multiple times already, and even special ammo has been nerfed. The problem is with the maps, not shotguns.

29 RepliesHow about this... 1. Buff auto rifles to where they are actually viable. 2. Buff fusion rifles to be more than shotgun range because as of now they honestly suck. 3. Make larger maps (not too big) that actually support snipers and fusion rifles. 4. Take away Thorn's send it perk, Hawkmoon needs to be what it's known for, RANGE. 5. Fix any bugs in the guns, example being The Last Word's bonus critical while ads. 6. Only nerf things in PvP, keep PvE separate. Additions to this list welcome

Edited by Erijian: 7/4/2015 8:28:57 AMIncrease the pellet spread of Shotguns when they are fired in mid-air, similarly to how the Fusion Rifle hipfire/aim spread practically triples if you're in the air. This would remedy the main thing that makes Shotguns an issue, which is Blink, without having to have Blink nerfed.

Shotguns arent the problem. Its the overall mechanics of PvP. It is too easy to engage an opponent at close range due to 1. Map design. Too much cover and the majority of matches are CQC. 2. Movement mechanics. Blink. Sprint. Slide. Even shoulder charge are used to quickly engage or get into shotgun range. There are no escape mechanics (apart from blink and the hunter will get one in TTK) this will result in the majority of builds not being able to get out of shotgun range when someone closes in. 3. There are now an abundance of felwinter type shotguns available for everyone. Giving them low rate of fire is pointless since it takes no skill to aim and shoot to kill with one of them. 1 shot 1 kill. 4. There are no actual counters to shotgun except another shotgun. This is a side effect of a combination of the movement mechanic and effectiveness of the weapon. Side arms are meant to fill this role but they are very lacking. Fusion rifles are just bad now. It is very difficult to balance a 1hit kill weapon without making it completely bad.
