Grenades and Horseshoes: the reason why Machine Guns are nearly unusable in Crucible now

As many of you are well aware, rocket launchers dominate the heavy ammo department in Crucible. People almost never use machine guns, and if they do they do so in specific scenarios and usually just to chain kills against players of significantly lower skill. Grenades and Horseshoes is a perk that allows your rockets to have proximity detonation. This means that even if your rocket is supposed to miss (by a fairly large margin), it will explode and kill the target. This does a few things that I believe are unfair: -It defies the principle of rocket launchers, which is that if you are accurate you will cause devastating damage, and if you miss you are screwed. Here you can miss and still cause devastating damage -It nullifies the use of machine guns which require sustained fire to kill targets. This is impossible since you will either allow the enemy to recover if you somehow manage to dodge the rocket, or you will die as you try to kill the target -It makes a rocket launcher automatically superior to other launchers. In a head on battle of a proximity rocket user vs non proximity rocket user, the proximity user will always win 100% of the time. There shouldn't be an end-all be-all perk on any weapon that you will lose if you don't have. That's all I have. I would suggest a fix of attaching a penalty to Grenades and Horseshoes, such as drastically lowered velocity and blast radius, or simply removing it. Share your thoughts. EDIT: For the people saying "take cover with a machine gun until their rockets run out".... By doing this, I am putting my team at a disadvantage by them basically being a player down. In a game with a high average TTK like Destiny, being a man down is a big disadvantage. In something like Trials, this strategy goes out the window because the team with more players will pretty much always win. Also god forbid you have more than one machine gun user doing this; you may end up being more than just one man down. Personally if someone on my team does this I would be pretty pissed at them for putting me at a disadvantage. Sure, my stats with a machine gun might look pretty good but that means nothing if the enemies get a Decisive Victory because I was nowhere to be found for a whole minute or two of the match.

  • It's not due to the proximity in my opinion, it's the blast radius that gets you. If the launcher had little blast radius & your trying to dodge the rocket, it'll be easy to survive. It's launchers such as truth & Ash Factory which can have full blast radius, which is the reason you die...

  • I use both, and hardly have difficulty with avoiding rockets. I get killed by machine guns more than rockets.

  • I'm surprised with a lot of responses here. LMG really have become obsolete with grenades and horseshoes outside of FFA. First of all against a perfect rocket, with a perfect machine, the best you can probably hope for is a trade. Second you can't jump/blink fire a LMG, which no one has pointed out. Which gives rocket users an advantage in mobility by default. LMG are by no means useless by rockets simply outclass them now by a landslide now. Yes you can get massive kill streaks if you don't get rocket'd, but against anyone decent you need to use a rocket. LMG are 100% unless in Trials. I still use my perfect OG Jolders Hammer in FFA but outside of that I rarely use my LMG anymore. Grenades and Horseshoes just makes too good.

I like 2 use both, depending on what map im on. On rusted lands where its wide open ill use a rocket to get an easy 2 or so kills. But i like MG on maps like FBD where i can easily get about 4 kills b4 im out of ammo

  • You're kidding right? Lol unusable? Use the BTRD with range or Jolder's with stability. Easy 10 kill streak if you are decent and get headshots. Rockets will get you no where near as many kills.

You gotta be stealthy with a machine gun and land your headshots with it. I try to flank the guys with rocket launchers. It works for me most times. Edit: Although in ToO I could see rockets as a more viable option.

Not sure I buy it. Usually find rockets quite easy to dodge. Good luck dodging a machine gun.

    • I'm sitting over here with plenty of kills on my BTRD. On a serious note, I've been killed plenty of times by machine guns in Crucible. Rockets and MGs both have their pros and cons. Rockets are more reliable and AOE, but have less ammo. Machine Guns can last a long time (sometimes you can use all of your MG ammo if you play your cards right), but can't one shot people.

      • I can get up to 12 or more kills with an lmg. Rocket launchers take less skill and get less kills. Lmg: More Skill= More kills Rocket Launchera: Less Skill= Less Kills This is all my opinion and my experience.

          • I some what agree. But if you want high kill streaks - rock an HMG. Hide for the first minute or so after heavy drops and wait till all rockets have been abused! Then see you later. I can't stand what bungie did with field scout and the new hmg. ALL old school hmg'a destroy them. Deviant or swarm with ag ballistics or hammer time!

I use hmg almost exclusively in PvP. Rockets give me maybe 3 kills, I can get on a 10+ kill streak with a hMG so they seem to work better for me.

              • I don't see the point of having heavy weapons at all if you never have ammunition for them.

              • "Shocker!"...."this just in"....guardian gets killed by a rocket launcher in the crucible! Forget about equipping a rocket launcher of your own. Never mind taking time to practice PVP. Ignore your team mates. Who needs a headset to communicate?! All you need to do is let the developers know that it's your party and you'll cry if you want to. Name which weapons scare you and what perks afraid of....... In a short time these guys will change the entire system to favor you, night night for now little snowflake"

                • I own with machine guns still. I do what I've always done. I grab heavy then post up not rushing in. Then I keep my ears open for rocket blasts as I watch the screen to see who is being killed. Then when the time is right I go get an insane kill streak. The problem with heavy is that every noob rushes trying to get fast kills without taking minute to form a strategy. Yes if you rush towards your opponent who has rockets your odds of survival aren't good. This isn't the rocket or it perks fault.

                  • In my experience rockets dominate in games with little team work. As soon as communication starts machine guns become viable because you have cover fire
