You know, I don't normally post on updates, but this one really got my knickers in a knot. Not having elites in ODST is patently stupid. What, one day Mombasa is crawling with hundreds/thousands of Elites, and then 24 hours later they all magically disappear and are replaced with Brutes? Please. The explanation does not make any sense. You may as well have said "You know all those elites you fought in Mombasa? Well they were ACTUALLY Brutes!" and achieved about the same suspension of disbelief. Quite simply this is a gameplay decision being made in spite of, and in detriment to, the halo story as we played and know it. I still don't quite understand why, though. It smacks of Bungie not willing to put the effort into fleshing out the elites. I know there are deadlines, but if you can put grunts/jackals/hunters into the game, why are elites such a problem? Maybe there were so many Halo 3 players that never touched the previous games and consider Elites as allies? In which case, goddamn is this ever a lame design decision. Players can re-learn who the enemies are, they aren't stupid. Next you'll be telling us that the lesser Covenant enemies have also been removed, so we're left fighting ONLY brutes. I lost a bit of respect for Bungie today. I thought you guys took the story more seriously than this.

i like that idea and i have another one. since Bungie claims the Chief is done can we get a game either taking place be4 Halo 2 playing as the Arbiter? or after Halo 3? he's a great character!

Well my anticipation for Halo 3 ODST just got shot. Funny how one little detail can taint your whole anticipation for a title and believe in the studio responsible. I respect Bungie for not keeping this information to themselves until the last moment but the idea of Elites not being in ODST stinks of a hash job. I guess its to be expected, theres only a small team working on ODST and you've already got a strict deadline but I along with alot of other people assumed that this was the whole point of setting ODST during Halo 2 and just prior to Halo 3! An opportunity to fight against the Elites and Brutes, a mighty unholy covenant........Saying that I am used to Halo's "Story Bible" getting in the way of good game play with Halo 2 and 3 but hiding behind your Bible in reference to the disappearing Elites is ridiculous... ----------------------------------- You as a studio just didnt have the time, will or justification to pour the resources you dont have into creating aggressive AI for the Elites! Why patronise your fans by saying anything else! No.......... Bungie is all about the fans! My ass, paint as rosey an explanation as you will but at the end of the day it all comes down to money. ------- But Bungie to be fair, we all know you love to keep up appearances but that was a weak cover story, we need you to bull -blam!- a little better next time, cheers.
Posted by: SD2522
And guess what? We're not only not going to remove the portion of the guide that covers the "heavenly hog" effect, we're going to eventually add the guide, in its entirety, to our Halo 3 How-To section on the official Project Page.
Awesomesauce. People need to not worry about things like this. Just because we know how to do it it doesn't mean it'll produce fantastic results.
Lol, that's exactly what i thought when i read it. I cAn Haz My GuId3 0n 7he ProJ3cT pAg3! I must be so 1337. lol, jk. Anyway, thanks again Urk, it was fun. Oh, and if you think i'm done with screenshots and the Bungie Blog, think again. A peek at the up coming project: Predator5791, enough said. lol.

Shishka... your truck is for sale??? Sounds like you're ready to own a BMW and experience the Joy in driving that you deserve. European Delivery is the vacation that you need my friend. PM me whenever you're ready. If you need any guidance for a purchase of any other vehicle, just ask. I've helped several b.net members get the best deals without any compensation of my own, just helping the community not get ripped. Max

If it isn't too late to add, could you guys make it possible to pilot the Pelican and/or Phantom?
-
i want u guys at Bungie to see this pic i drew of chief in adobe illustrator, love Halo huge fan, and you'll see that in my pic, i obviously have no life lol. so can i send it to webmaster? or what do i do? help me please!

Please tell us if it is urk's influence that is reducing the amount of time fans are being kept on the hook. I really appreciate being not played so long and let off the hook so early. Whether it was urk or a combined decision, I thank you. Excellent update. Perhaps even more than we fans deserve, sometimes. Though I am not upset by fighting the Brutes I had hopes to see the Elites in some kind of action in ODST. Either by friend or foe encounters. [Edited on 01.23.2009 6:05 PM PST]

Well anyway, there's ONE PROBLEM! If we think the ODST Trailer, and it's canonical, meaning the game happens same time (or starts anyway) as the trailer, the game's on October 20-21... how did the Elites vanish from New Mombasa in less than 24 hours? And why are not the elites in game? That was not answered really... sure the lore thing but why they're not in? You don't have time to make agressive AI for them? Why? EDIT, really, CLARIFY the timeline even more in future BWUs, like Halo 3 dates, and all sorts of little stuff... that'd be nice. EDIT Good update though the news were bad and disapointting in a way. I like the elites but also fighting them. Brutes were FAR TOO EASY enemies in Halo 3... (Even on legendary, though that difficulty is just frustrating, not challengin nor fun) Make the Brutes good, hard enemies in ODST really.
Even though l was dissappointed in halo 3 about the whole elite thing, l think they go well in new mombasa. And no, l could not understand your text above.
Why quote if dont understand? Anyway, found a "mistake" (if it's Bungie made, is it a mistake? October 20: New Mombasa, Kenya is destroyed by the Slipstream Space Rupture Backlash from the Prophet of Regret’s ship. Kenya is destroyed? I think it should be "Kenya, New Mombasa is...." After all, Kenya didn't look burned and destroyed in Halo 3.
Can't we all agree that Halo3 had a very bad campaign.
New Mombasa, Kenya is the subject in that sentence. New Mombasa is the main subject while Kenya is describing the country in which New Mombasa is located. Are you not from the United States?

Holy -blam!-, that's a ton of info. I am kind of bummed though, I mean, I was looking forward to fighting some Elites, and also looking forward to an ADS element.... Guess that's 2 things I can't get excited for, haha.
Posted by: WKS No elites? thats FAIL. Brutes arent even fun to fight!!!!!!!! they're bigger so they're more static and less mobile creatures (the cheiftain is the only one who really moves anywhere, the others just strafe like retards even on legendary) The elites were slimmer, and faster. they would flank, and completely merk you on legendary. THEY WOULD MOVE! legendary on halo 3 is basically just super powerful weapons, there's no noticeable shift in AI reactions . Also I know exactly why halo doesn't feel the same. in Halo 1 I felt like I really was the last hope. I felt like I was really pulling humanity back from the brink. in halo 2, i just felt like i was in a space, shooting people. in halo 3 i felt like i was in a place, shooting people...with an assault rifle, not THE assault rifle, just an assault rifle. Halo 1 was a much darker story than halo 2 or 3. You actually felt like you were losing the fight, in halo 2 and 3 your job is to destroy everything. In halo 1 your job is to survive.
lol spot on i agree.
Posted by: Shishka Don't see why not. It's my truck, not a feature of an upcoming Bungie game. =P It's a Ford Ranger. It's pretty old, and I wouldn't describe it as being in "top condition."
Posted by: CarnagePWND May I ask, what type of truck? Are you allowed to say it?

Dang, Ford Ranger just like mine... Mine is a 1994 though and it has well over 180k miles on it. I have to get a new truck myself before long, it's getting way too old but I love that truck even though I hate Fords.

Urk, the detritus belongs on the front of a white shirt. The back should be festooned with that emoticon, gigantic, and in glorious Bungie Blue. Shishka, a friend of mine used to be the proud owner of an ancient Ford Ranger that was an unintentional mobile sound and light show. It was dubbed the Nebuchadnezzar. Thanks to all for an update to gorge upon. Now I have the "update sweats." [Edited on 01.23.2009 5:33 PM PST]
Posted by: ObliternateN80 aww no dinos to kill, oh well its still fun to pwn space apes. id like more info on the multiplayer side of things, if this is an expansion will we get new weapons and stuff to use in multiplayer, like the BRSMG lol
No, they've stated that the only thing added to MP will be new maps.

It's seems to me that fighting the brutes does make sense. Because when you return to Earth it is the Brutes that are in charge. However, Just before you leave Earth there are still Elites fighting humans. So a gradual change in O.D.S.T. from Elite to Brutes would make more sense story wise. Showing the Brutes taking complete control over time. But these are just fine points. I trust Bungie and I know that the game will be AWESOME! :) I just with it was going to be a FULL length game.

Lot of info in this update. Thank you for the explanation as to why brutes are already in New Mombasa, that was confusing at first.

This may have been the longest update we've seen since before the Halo 3 release. And yet, I can't help but feel there will be some people who said this was awful. I've always been a fan of the storyline, so ODST will answer a bunch of questions that we had when Halo 3 came out. Now, I know that Halo Wars LE will have the Mythic Maps on them, and I assume they are downloadable to the HDD. With ODST, will all the current maps be included on ODST or will we download the rest of the maps to the HDD and play them with the Halo 3 disk?

Wonderful update!
-
aah, i must see those atmospherics now. It sounds like there an awesomely high amount of detail being put into the mood of the game via the atmosphere. Cant wait to read the next update.
