Why all the controversy over the rebel flag?

Alright, so I get that some people are offended by the rebel flag. According to its critics, this is primarily because it was flown by an institution that supported slavery, and later by the KKK. Now, I could go on for the rest of this post about how it stands for southern pride and not white supremacy, and about how the majority of people who fly it do so not because they hate other races, but because they love their home. But let's face it, we've all heard those arguments. I wouldn't be bringing any new thoughts to the table if I did that. So instead, I'll provide a counterexample. The flag of the United States of America. The Stars and Stripes. Old Glory. Whatever you call it, you know the flag I'm talking about. Well, quite frankly, I am far more offended by this flag than the rebel one(albeit, still not very offended, but moreso than by the rebel flag). Most of you are probably confused right now, so allow me to elaborate. As far as the Confederate flag goes, it's supposedly offensive because it was flown over slavery from 1861 to 1865 and later used by the KKK. In the meantime, allow me to tally up the monumental evils done, specifically to minorities, under the American flag: -Enslaving black people from 1776 to 1863 -Committing genocide against innumerable tribes of American natives in the name of the white man's westward expansion -Related to the above, forcing countless peaceful American natives to leave their home and that of their ancestors on the Trail of Tears -Internment of people of Japanese descent from the West coast And those are just off the top of my head, yet nobody seems to be offended by this flag. As far as I'm concerned, let people flag whatever flags they want. It's freedom of speech. Thoughts? EDIT: I would also like to clarify that I'm not really offended by either flag, it just makes more sense to me that the American flag could be offensive. Also, if you have anything I forgot to add to either list, please tell me so I can add it.

  • Be careful, people don't like that "truth" stuff. Also, it wasn't flown by the kkk originally. They flew the standard American flag. I think Nathan Bedford Forest actually forbade it.

    • Butt hurt people. They even want to change UNLV macaque to something else, even when it was changed for the same reason.

    • You've enlightened me. I am now offended by all flags.

    • >deeds of Flag of a country that's existed since 1774 >Deeds of a movement that lasted 4 years.

    • The contreversy over the rebel flag has been almost completely fueled by two sources; the media, and the NAACP, because actually helping black people is too much for them.

    • While I do agree that old glory has a past wrapped in horrid actions, at least America has done more than those to date. The south flew that flag when trying to break the union over an issue which was at least partially, if not mostly, fueled by a disagreement over slavery. Plus, history tends to be written by the victors so, as a result, the "known facts" are that America started as a desire for people to free themselves from a tyrannical king and establish a peaceful free nation whereas the south wanted to break from us to start a nation which sustained slavery. At least some of that is true and so the American flag remains less offensive, especially in America where non-native Americans tend to be the majority (and the majority mindset runs this country).

      • The history of every country is blotched with the stain of slavery, of all colors! Antiquity: Egypt. Greece. Rome. Classical and Renaissance: Middle East. Europe. Asia. Pre-modern era: South America. United States It's a sad fact but it shows the progression of human civilization. Men and women of all colors.

      • that is actually a decent argument for why the heritage of the united states (and Canada and Australia and new world former-colonial states generally) is incredibly racist, but I don't think it quite compares to a violent rebellion whose entire reason for being was the preservation of black enslavement, or the battle flag of the same which was made prominent through its adoption by terrorists. but, you know 'free speech' or whatever
