Ascendant shards are for what?
Sorry if it's a noob question but i just got my first ascendant shard. After looking on the destiny wikia it says it's used for upgrading legendary gear. But every bit of legendary gear i have requires etheric light to upgrade.
I have only just got the expansions so maybe these have a use later? After etheric light on the next stage maybe?

Ascendant shards were used to upgrade Gen 1 armor and currently are used to upgrade armor from the Vault of glass in the same way radiant shards upgrade Crota raid armor. you can trade shards/energy with the speaker for Glimmer/motes of light and other goodies.

They are for upgrading vault of glass raid gear and pre dlc vanguard gear.

1 ReplyAfter house of wolves dropped it was implemented where you can trade them in to the speaker. 1 for 250 glimmer or 2 for 1 mote of light.

Vanilla Destiny gear requires shards. Now only raid gear needs them.

before the HoW dlc it's what you needed for upgrades. Now I think it's just for vault gear or stuff you still have but never maxed out.

They're used for Vault of Glass stuff now, since all of the previous items they were used for aren't available anymore.

Thanks for all the replies. It's going in my vault for now then. No immediate need for motes, the ones i had were sat there for a while and blew them on 3 or 4 exotic engrams yesterday so i might as well save it for now and see what i decide to do in the game.

You can trade them with the speaker to get motes and glimmer or other upgrade materials

This was for old old gear. Take it to the Speaker and trade it in for motes of light or glimmer. Worthless now. I traded in over 100 of those and 60 of the energies for motes

It's for gear that is before the expansions, from the Vault of Glass raid mostly. Ascendant Energy is for the raid weapons. Same thing with Radiant Shards/Energy which is for the Crota's End raid gear. Etheric Light just "ascends" the older gear to the new Damage/Light Max level. So when Vanilla was around, Max weapon damage was 300 and now it's 365. Max light back then was 30, now it's 42, and so on. Hope it helps! They were mostly used for any armor that was not crota raid gear, until HoW dropped. However, if you run the VoG, and happen to like the armor, hang on to some, since you'll need them to upgrade that particular series

Doesn't look like anyone mentioned selling the ascendant shards and energy. You can trade them at the Speaker. 2 shards will get you a more of light

It was in vanilla destiny when there was upgrade defense trees but you'll never know what that is since house of wolves came out.
