This is why I’ve actually suggested that Destiny figures out a way to make cosmetic microtransactions work as a way to generate revenue without unbalancing the game, which would allow the creation of bigger and better content in the future. The game has so many cosmetic components from class items to shaders to ships to even emotes, the potential for microtransactions is there. Players may cringe at the idea, but it could really help the long term health of the game. But with players not even sold on the DLC model right now, it may be untenable. And now, unfortunately, Destiny’s first foray into microtransactions has been this new deal where players are paying $20 for a bundle of collector’s edition cosmetics after a prolonged spat between Bungie and fans. After that, the idea may be even more toxic.
If we are paying a premium for content every year how come we can get simple in game fixes such as a respectable amount of vault space or a fix to the synthesis shenanigans? Not every idea the fan base will work or should be implemented but the ideas that reoccur over and over again should be taken into consideration. There are a lot of ideas that if Bungie implemented, I'd happily say alright we are getting somewhere and further be more willing to be generous with my money.

I wouldn't mind paying money towards destiny but when you got the original game that lacks major content that got boring fast.. With bungie making it how they want use to play the game instead how we want to...(like herding cattle to the slaughter house) Then CE comes out its still very little to do (crota that is very short and Eris morn bountys) After that TDB came out..no raid this time but tried to come out with something that appeal to both pvp and pve but the rewards are kinda lack luster.. But slightly better than CE due to a new social space... TTK is said to be bigger than both CE and TDB but with a big lack of content in the past what is to say this ain't another big hype for us to buy but when released its another let down? I know bungie needs funding to make this game really pop but to have exclusive content only if you rebuy the content you already have. Now they said you can buy the exclusive content separately for 20 bucks... What bungie should do is provide us with content that is worth the asking price... But until then TTK should be valued at 20.00-25.00 and as for the exclusive content that should be valued at 4.99 (also called micro transactions) Until bungie proves them self to us they shouldn't be asking astronomical prices like they are...

2 RepliesI'm just so burned out on the game and HOW was completely crap in my opinion. I don't think I'll ever get over Shank Burn.
-
HoW was not enough content until TTK. The weapons are terrible and can't even be collected due to lack of vault space.

Not defending destiny here, but isn't this author known for his very biased anti-destiny articles. Just think it's worth trying to find objective opinions.

1 ReplyEdited by chemsoldier83: 6/28/2015 5:55:31 PMThis isnt nearly as ridiculous as when EA introduced what amounted to paying to level your character after the last expansion for BF3 came out. We all grinded our asses off for a year only to see newbs pay to have the same equipment as the rest of us. As long as its just cosmetic im fine with it.

1 ReplyObviously bungie now realizes how far off base they are with destiny players. They didn't deliver the game that was promised - not even close - and they keep fixing things that aren't game breaking while ignoring things that have to be done like making hand cannons not so powerful that no one uses anything else and vault space. They must have figured that with each new expansion players would delete all their old stuff and only use the new gear but the problem is the new gear just isn't up to par compared to the older gear. When a player would rather use a 365 shadow price over any other queen gun that is a problem. I've deleted lots of queen gear just because I don't have the space to keep them. Redonkulous.

Buyable Currency. That's probably their best answer. some like what Elder Scrolls and many MMOs do. Have a vendor in the Tower that accepts a buyable currency for cosmetic/consumable items. Shaders, Emblems, Ships, Synths, Glimmer Consumables, Sparrows, Ghost Shells, Emotes etc. Things that are inconsequential to level, armour, damage etc should all be purchasable or be obtainable through Grinding/Random drops in packages. Make the Token Packs reasonably priced, and the amount you need to buy the consumables low and there is the revenue stream that Activision wants, and would allow Bungie to push out actual new content in Patches, rather than locking it all behind DLC paywalls. You cant go charging $15 - $20 for packs of tokens that are only able to get you 2 Shaders and a ship. Packs should range from $5 - $50, let people spend what they want. Look at Avatar Clothing....that is utterly usless...but people, including me, bought pieces of it. Look at Candy Crush, Simpsons: Tapped Out, Farmville etc....they rake in money with their premium currency. That should be what supports Destiny. Either buy stuff or dont....it should be an option. They could then slash the price of future expansions and people might warm up to buying them again. Tokens should never be useable for Weapons, Armour, Gear Upgrades or anything that can influence a players ability...just how they look.

7 Replies1/3 of the price of a full game so I have 3 emotes 3 shades and 3 other -blam!-ing useless things....holy shit bungie is indeed dead they are but Activision puppet now.....and they have their greedy corporate arm up bungie's ass all the way in.

Starting to think that Activision has a weird fetish for ruining game developers that start with a "B" so they can feel dominant at the top of the alphabet. >< Seriously though, I actually read this article prior to seeing it on here. Kudos man.

7 RepliesJust saying Diablo 3 doesn't have Micro Transactions, had one Expansion and continues to push out updates and add free things.
-
Honestly, I think this is a pretty well written article. The idea of cosmetic micro-transactions makes all the sense in the world, but only if Bungie was able to put a system in place to apply those shaders to weapons, individual armor pieces, sparrows, ghosts and ships. The way the shader / class item implementation currently exists, paired with the general sentiment of the player-base with regards to paying for content, makes micro-transactions "untenable" (as the article puts it). It really comes down to Bungie's ability to get through this rough patch of PR nightmares, and ultimately prove that TTK isn't just a combination of HOW / TDB in terms of the amount of content it delivers.
-
Or we could unbox weapon shaders and then sell said shaders due to their rarity and quality to other players
CSGO
Why does the title make me think Destiny made/owns Activision?
-
As long as it's not pay to win. If this happens, they would have to be more proactive with the fixes too, which I don't know if they can.

So here is a solution, why not go to the bases of what MW2 did with the Elite program, that generates revenue and fans bought it and got 15+ different micro dlc's through out the life of that game. It seemed to work and kept activision happy with wanting to make money. . That did actually tear infinity ward apart. So maybe not. I think to appease everyone it will take some sacrificing from everywhere. Both parts the consumer and the publisher. Honestly this is bungie's first 4 platform game without getting help form microsoft. I say take a breathe like I have before and set back and enjoy this new TLC and see what happens in 2016. if it's not better than what this last time around then move along. Honestly, I don't think this is Bungie's fault entirely, This is not how they carried themselves when they made Halo and prior games. I think it has more to do with Activision. Thats just a theory and I have said that since the first DLC. Here is a funny picture also to show you that why I think Activision is pulling most of the strings and Bungie just wants to make a great game for everyone like they use too Notice who GameStop is saying made the game? There is your answer... http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-3-destiny,28zu0 http://puu.sh/iFQNv/fb25301e70.png

I say we got 2 months to decide to buy. Micro transaction will be fine as long as they don't sell weapons and armors with stats. emotes yes, shaders, ships, fashion items to wear over your gear or items that let you turn a piece of gear into a fashion item(create a copy of it so you won't lose the original stated item).
-
Edited by Komrade Kanuck: 6/28/2015 2:57:41 PMI can live with micro transactions as long as they do not influence gameplay. If they wanna sell shaders and class items, meh. People waste money on stupider shit every day, so who am I to judge? That being said, when they make something like Jellyhorn a micro transaction-only weapon, they will successfully destroy Destiny. It's a fine line to walk, but if they can make it work, go for it. Just be smart about it.

2 RepliesI could tell you about the great war... I could tell you about all these things that may make the game make more sense...But I won't...Now you must go... because things are happening.

good read but they forgot to mention how all content so far was suppose to be in the original game. And how every DLC we have gotten has been reskinned guns/armor/ships/sparrows and a bunch of backward mission gameplay.

Edited by GraciousEel761: 6/28/2015 3:48:09 PMMicrotransactions. They are only viable for Destiny if the game they release has a ton of content in my opinion. So for Destiny, no, they are not viable. They should just ride out the status quo until Destiny 2 (assuming there is a Destiny 2), at which point, will no longer be limited to previous Gen consoles, and they can really pull out all the stops and make the game people actually want (if they so desire). I am assuming that in Destiny 2, characters from Destiny will transfer over in some degree. Whether that means they will have level 38 be the min level, or the characters just start back over at one is way off topic actually. I have no problem with Microtransactions in certain cases (LoL's model is great). As long as they don't affect the mechanical performance of the game (pay to win model), or lock items behind a price wall, I think it is fine. If they want to sell shaders, they need to be careful. They should not make Faction shaders in-game shop only, but if they want to release special shaders like they are already doing, I think this is ok. They've clearly already made up their mind about it anyway, so my individual approval doesn't matter. Basically, pay to win is bogus, and microtransactions will have negative effects on the players attitudes towards the game unless the game is very well done or offers enough content that they feel like they got there money's worth at launch. If players feel like the initial game is lacking, and more content is locked behind a paywall, then you will see controversy (as dumb as that sounds, being a game and all).

1 ReplyEdited by Bytehoven: 6/28/2015 2:10:16 PMNIce article. These sentiments have been expressed many times by many forum members. Never once has some one from Bungie took part in a conversation when such logical topics have been present. so there in lies part of the problem. Bungie really does not want to empower the player base thru any public forum discussion about the financial model as they would start to loose more control of their "destiny". Also, as I had previously posted when making very similar conclusions and being attacked by many fans, regardless of the revenue model, it all comes down to how many players want to continue to play the game. That's my biggest gripe. I'm bored with Destiny and I'm not sure TTK is the fix I need to actually want to continue playing. One thing Paul didn't suggest, is maybe Destiny & Activision have to invest more development than they are comfortable with at this time. Maybe they have to bring about some serious changes to enhance game psychology, changes that might cut into their bottom line, but reward players investing in the journey. IMHO, BUngie & Activision have made a huge mistake by over charging for the TDB/HOW and TTK DLC expansions. Like Paul suggested, it has given the player base even more cause to expect or imagine more than Bungie seems willing to deliver, and it makes many players angry. Add in gaming frustrations also due to aspects of the game feeling broken or in need of change, and you have a perfect storm of discontent. Lastly… it's not going to be pretty when the fall gaming season turns out such highly anticipated competition for player eye balls.
