Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It's a cliche and not even really true, but it is an apt description of the Skolas fight. After banging my head against the wall for 3 hours last night, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm not the type to normally come to the forums to complain, but I feel it's warranted this time.
For the record, I have beaten Skolas twice: once on the Arc burn week, and once last week (with a Warlock and Titan respectively). So I've beaten him both pre and post patch. Not to mention many hours of trying to do it both pre and post patch and failing. I know the strategy, I know the mechanics, I have all the right weapons, and I don't suck. I'm no MLG pro or anything, but I'm far from casual. I have no trouble completing any endgame content in Destiny.
My issue isn't that the fight is hard, it is and it should be. My issue is that it isn't fun, it's frustrating. As an MMO veteran, I welcome the use of mechanics instead of bullet sponge bosses. I love that you have to communicate and work as a team to complete it. However, I feel that there is just too much for most teams to handle. Consider all the things to worry about: Skolas, the adds, the Devouring Essence, the Mines, the modifiers, and level disadvantage. None of these is any more concerning than any other, my opinion (and I stress MY OPINION) is that there are simply too many things to worry about for the majority of players, especially on teams with inconsistent rosters.
The factor that annoys me the most is the level disadvantage. We had to deal with this during hard Crota as well, and even though that wasn't terribly difficult, I still feel it was a cop out. It's an artificial difficulty multiplier, and completely uncreative on Bungie's part. With such drastic penalties for being "underleveled" for a fight, like those that exist in Destiny as a whole, there really is no reason for any endgame encounter to be at a higher level that we are. I think even at level 34 it would still require teamwork and communication to defeat Sokolas and deal with all the other mechanics, but it would remove a lot of the frustration of being two-shotted by a random add. I think this would allow many more teams to complete the activity while not making it so easy that it's a joke.
There is also the issue with the rewards. For such a grueling fight, there is really very little reward. You are not guaranteed any gear or weapons, and the treasure chests are no different than those in any other PoE encounter. For going 9-0 in Trials you are guaranteed an elemental primary, an exotic, and whatever other goodies you get out of the Lighthouse chest. It is very hard to go 9-0, so those rewards are appropriate. Defeating Skolas is also very hard, but the rewards are lackluster at best. Considering the way the rewards are currently in PoE, there really is no reason for the fight to be that difficult.
There will be those that say the fight is fine as is, that the level disadvantage is just a part of the fight and we should just deal with it. I also expect a fair amount of "git gud scrub" and "filthy casual" remarks from the uncomfortably high percentage of immature people on the forums. My counter to the former is that Vault of Glass was hard, and fun, and rewarding, and there was no level disadvantage. The raid was level 30, and as long as you were level 30 you were on an even playing field. To the latter I will simply ignore you as I ignore the opinions of anyone not able to hold an adult conversation.
I know Bungie will not change the Skolas encounter any further, and this is not some ultimatum that if they do not concede to my wishes I will quit the game.. I love this game, and I will keep playing it. My only goals in writing this are to vent my own frustration and hopefully find some other Guardians that feel similarly. If Bungie, by some random act of the universe, did read this, I would only ask that you consider those not it the upper echelon of gaming prowess when designing endgame activities. I am an MMO veteran so I understand that those types of activities should be challenging, but they should also be attainable by more than a small percentage of the player base.
If you have no trouble beating Skolas three times every week, good for you. I truly am glad you have the skill and consistent team needed to do that. This post is not for you, and I hope you understand that in the end this is a game, and it should be fun. Right now, in my opinion, Skolas is not fun, it is a hot mess of frustration. I have a feeling I'm not alone in that opinion.

2 RepliesI would like to see the adds rate of fire come down a bit. If your two friends have cover and your the only one they can spot. Good night Irene.

1 ReplyCheckpoints on 35 would fix everything, imo

Edited by EYEQUtheREBEL: 6/26/2015 9:12:56 PMUnless they up the rewards im done with 35 skolas. Beat it post patch with randoms and was completely unenjoyable if thats even a word lol. I get better drops on nightfalls. What is the point grinding for a key....beating 5-6 rounds of PoE....for mote of light...strange coin...and a blam-ing piece of garbage legendary weapon? Oh wait well we get etheric light and a weapon and armor core depending on which level. Is this really worth it? I have 5 weap cores....1 armor ...1 etheric light. Losing my interest in the grind. Elder cipher bounties not that interesting....the bow is cool but i hardly use it.

3 Repliesit's not just the fight, it's the time taken to get to it, 5 other rounds the 4th round is ridiculous, level 35 reaver captains with tracking bullets the drops on skolas are too rare, compared to the way they're guaranteed in trials there are no checkpoints I won't be playing level 35 again until they make some radical changes to it

5 RepliesEdited by SwabThePoopDeck: 6/26/2015 9:25:24 PMJust run left. Break servitor bond and shoot as many rockets as you can. Then circle around and hide in that room beneath the raised platform on the other side. Spread out so the sword captain that spawns down there and/or skolas's cannon can't wipe everyone at once. All you have to do is clear ads (they don't come in the room), watch Skolas's fire and move if he shoots at you, and kill the sword captain that comes from one of those side doors each time ads spawn. Once I tried this strat, Skolas got way easier. I have run multiple times pretty much every week. 15 or so clears now and have my exotics, void scout, arc pulse, and solar hand cannon. Skolas is a cute little guy once you get to know him. My team and I actually like the fight more now post burn.

7 RepliesCheckpoints.

I agree as many do that we need checkpoints.

1 ReplyStopped reading after you used that definition.

4 RepliesThis is not Far Cry 3. Lol but yeah I get ya and I know what you mean. The grinding is real
-
3 RepliesIf you killed Skolas once, there is 100% no reason to do it again. 34 gives almost the same rewards.
-
Ok, I only read half your post. But skolas is a difficult battle but it's very beatable! I find that communication is key, also problem solving. I tend to take charge for skolas, I told my team to move off of big platform sooner than later because we were dying there a lot thanks to one hit melee deaths (lightswitch). We beat him the next run. Oh and don't get too frustrated, joke and laugh whenever possible, keep the mood right or else it will suck!! Good lucj

Have I ever told you the definition of insanity?

4 RepliesI actually love the Skolas encounter (post nerf). It's some of the most fun I've had in this game.
-
Assuming results were never different bro. That's the part of the insanity definition that is implied. In Destiny, there is potential for different results.
-
I would agree that fight was a little bit ridiculous before they nerfed it, that are burned was total s*** but obviously not on beatable I barely scraped it by the skin of my teeth and I didn't exactly have any fun doing it. but hey everyone likes different things so no one opinion is absolutely correct

I actually loooove the Skolas encounter. To me, it is hands down, far and away, the most fun activity in destiny. It's so intense! Everyone needs to be constantly communicating, and your strategy changes a bit with each team, and I love the process of figuring out a system that works well for every player in your team. Each person has to carry their own weight. To me, it's the only battle that feels like a real battle! It's truly formidable, but also very manageable if you get a decent team and solid communication going around. Like you said, trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insane though. Try switching it up a bit. Before you take him below 50% to activate the mines, make sure everyone is alive, ads are killed, and everyone has supers. When the mines come, send the immune person across the map to get the mine on the other side. The tainted guy and the non-immune guy need to sick together so they can trade off poison. The non-immune guy is the VIP. It is his job to stay alive no matter what, because if he dies, everything can spiral out of control. For the middle mine spawn, either send a hunter or use a Titan bubble up there. And have at least one person on your team running with a shotgun to take care of any ambushing captains.
-
If anything bro switch up your group of friends it's more about experience too me and my friends laugh and joke so much during the fight it almost seems as if we're not even fighting. Heck sometimes because of it we've even lost someone to the essence because we were having fun and forgot to call out the time. When you stop doing it just to be rewarded and do it because it's challenging it becomes a fun fight. If you're on xbox i'll even run with you my gt is TheMoneyMeech. Good luck bro

I expected vaas from far cry 3

2 RepliesI've admittedly only cleared the activity once, but I still don't believe it's all that difficult. By tying the adds to Skolas' health they've made the battle much more predicable and controllable, but they've also made the idea of burning him down quickly a VERY bad idea. The fight is now very methodical and algorithmic, which probably detracts from the fun the most, its very predictable. 1) Clear adds / perform objective 2) Damage Skolas The key to the battle is damaging Skolas to the point where adds spawn, then clearing the adds, then repeating. You should not be doing both at once or the fight will be unmanageable.
-
I've done it every week except this one, sometimes on multiple characters but not always. I'm not doing it anymore, it is a terribly designed game activity that is just not fun. It's not about game mechanics, it is about getting the right luck when it comes to mine spawns, where the adds go and how quickly Skolas teleports. Just stupid. Expect this post to be buried by the chat admins because Bungie will not accept that PoE 35 sucks ass, even though we all know it.

Hang in there; he'll be cake after September 15.
