Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It's a cliche and not even really true, but it is an apt description of the Skolas fight. After banging my head against the wall for 3 hours last night, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm not the type to normally come to the forums to complain, but I feel it's warranted this time.
For the record, I have beaten Skolas twice: once on the Arc burn week, and once last week (with a Warlock and Titan respectively). So I've beaten him both pre and post patch. Not to mention many hours of trying to do it both pre and post patch and failing. I know the strategy, I know the mechanics, I have all the right weapons, and I don't suck. I'm no MLG pro or anything, but I'm far from casual. I have no trouble completing any endgame content in Destiny.
My issue isn't that the fight is hard, it is and it should be. My issue is that it isn't fun, it's frustrating. As an MMO veteran, I welcome the use of mechanics instead of bullet sponge bosses. I love that you have to communicate and work as a team to complete it. However, I feel that there is just too much for most teams to handle. Consider all the things to worry about: Skolas, the adds, the Devouring Essence, the Mines, the modifiers, and level disadvantage. None of these is any more concerning than any other, my opinion (and I stress MY OPINION) is that there are simply too many things to worry about for the majority of players, especially on teams with inconsistent rosters.
The factor that annoys me the most is the level disadvantage. We had to deal with this during hard Crota as well, and even though that wasn't terribly difficult, I still feel it was a cop out. It's an artificial difficulty multiplier, and completely uncreative on Bungie's part. With such drastic penalties for being "underleveled" for a fight, like those that exist in Destiny as a whole, there really is no reason for any endgame encounter to be at a higher level that we are. I think even at level 34 it would still require teamwork and communication to defeat Sokolas and deal with all the other mechanics, but it would remove a lot of the frustration of being two-shotted by a random add. I think this would allow many more teams to complete the activity while not making it so easy that it's a joke.
There is also the issue with the rewards. For such a grueling fight, there is really very little reward. You are not guaranteed any gear or weapons, and the treasure chests are no different than those in any other PoE encounter. For going 9-0 in Trials you are guaranteed an elemental primary, an exotic, and whatever other goodies you get out of the Lighthouse chest. It is very hard to go 9-0, so those rewards are appropriate. Defeating Skolas is also very hard, but the rewards are lackluster at best. Considering the way the rewards are currently in PoE, there really is no reason for the fight to be that difficult.
There will be those that say the fight is fine as is, that the level disadvantage is just a part of the fight and we should just deal with it. I also expect a fair amount of "git gud scrub" and "filthy casual" remarks from the uncomfortably high percentage of immature people on the forums. My counter to the former is that Vault of Glass was hard, and fun, and rewarding, and there was no level disadvantage. The raid was level 30, and as long as you were level 30 you were on an even playing field. To the latter I will simply ignore you as I ignore the opinions of anyone not able to hold an adult conversation.
I know Bungie will not change the Skolas encounter any further, and this is not some ultimatum that if they do not concede to my wishes I will quit the game.. I love this game, and I will keep playing it. My only goals in writing this are to vent my own frustration and hopefully find some other Guardians that feel similarly. If Bungie, by some random act of the universe, did read this, I would only ask that you consider those not it the upper echelon of gaming prowess when designing endgame activities. I am an MMO veteran so I understand that those types of activities should be challenging, but they should also be attainable by more than a small percentage of the player base.
If you have no trouble beating Skolas three times every week, good for you. I truly am glad you have the skill and consistent team needed to do that. This post is not for you, and I hope you understand that in the end this is a game, and it should be fun. Right now, in my opinion, Skolas is not fun, it is a hot mess of frustration. I have a feeling I'm not alone in that opinion.

1 ReplyPOE is very boring. The only fight that is fun is Skolas. You need some serious team work and communication. You pretty much need to do the run perfect. One mistake can cause you to wipe. I enjoy a challenge. But I agree with you. The rewards are weak.
-
There is no reason to do the 35. So why even bother? Judgements chances are a weak reward. The skolas fight is a cakewalk. Pre and post changes.
-
Yea rewards suck, thats why i stopped doing it after i finished my ciphers.
-
Have I ever told you... The true meaning of insanity.. Good job If you get the reference
-
I agree with everything you said. well put.

6 RepliesPeople keep talking about the level disadvantage but I think they are missing the point of it. Skolas isn't being made harder by the level disadvantage. They could have made him level 34 but have more health and hit harder and get the same result. The reason he is level 35 is so that he becomes much easier once you get top 35+ light level.

3 RepliesThe only issue that I may truly agree with you on is the poor reward system. That being said, I have beaten Skolas twice this week. I actually would argue that, not only is it a good fight, it's my favorite. My reasoning for this opinion is that, if you play with others who understand that their deaths are weighted far more heavily in this activity than any other Destiny end-game content, it is incredibly smooth. There exists a very rigid order of of events that require immediate and focused attention. Even with very, very casual players, the fight is still very smooth if the mechanics are addressed as they become introduced. In Crota and Atheon, not only was a high level of skill mandatory, but an amount of luck was required, as well. I've never felt this way in the Skolas fight because team work and an unanimous understanding of the mechanics will yield a quick victory. Having stated my opinion in reference to your troubles with the fight, I'm sorry that you haven't had good runs with it. If you find a good team to run it with, I hope you can see it being as fun as I think it is.
-
.....I bought the DLC, but after hearing about all the issues with the 34 and 35 raids decided to just not bother
-
TBH I find the fight quite fun, at the least very satisfying to beat. I don't do it with the same people each week, I always go off of LFG, but the only week I gave up on was Arc Burn. I definitely agree that the rewards should be buffed, perhaps more elemental primaries or a high chance for exotics, etc.
-
I think it's probably the funnest boss in Destiny. Not close to perfect though. Skolas himself needs to do more, as he's really just the Archon Priest but with a Scorch Cannon instead. At certain health points he should change his own attacks alongside the debuff and mines. Although the worst thing about Skolas has to be the primary weapon drops. I got 3 ciphers this week, meaning that I've had 5 so far. I've only had one primary weapon drop, and it was the auto rifle with Shank Burn. Useless. I have an elemental version of every Trials weapon (2 of some), so why is it so hard to get one from Skolas?

6 Repliesthere is one major flaw to your argument about the level disadvantages, you reference vog as an end game activity that did not require this, however for vog no one could become a level 30 without finishing vog hard as a 29 many times over in most cases. If you played this game pre dlc's this meant that the level disadvantage was there still as having a 30 in your team was very rare. What destiny changed with the two subsequent dlc's was enable players to reach the level cap without ever attempting the games hardest content (poe and ce) so they had to find another way to increase the difficulty like doing vog as 29's, so the over levelled endgame content was born.

Nope I refuse to set another foot in there untill they add a check points. I feel your pain.
-
Personally I enjoy the fight, but I get your frustration.
-
I get what your saying my problem is when light switch is on got so close to beating him just for some stealth to stab you in the back
-
Blah blah blah blah..........blah
-
Found a checkpoint on the app today and we beat it first try in 10 minutes... It is crucial your fireteam knows how the fight works.

6 RepliesActually, the definition of insanity is:
The state of being seriously mentally ill; madness
1 ReplyI've taken on skolas twice and beat him both times, one before the nerf and one after. Personally I like the later because it gave to time to think, as supposed to just trying to nuke him quickly. I think it's super well balanced... Try not shooting adds when you go for mines, it wont agro them straight away and maybe buy you a few seconds...
-
i understand your pain i have done it twice and not completed it. i feel they should have a more constant way to beat it and not have it luck based
-
Good, quit destiny.

Edited by iTz ThE tDoGg: 6/26/2015 6:12:45 PMI have to agree that the only thing worth doing Skolas for is the hope of an elemental primary. And since the drop rates suck... And there's no saved checkpoints... Yeah, I'm pretty much over it. We did take a first timer through it this week; just getting him through with under-levelled weapons was honestly the best thing I've gotten from completing Skolas.

Last week I completed Skolas with a fireteam made up of randoms with minimal difficulty. We had fun, got to know each other, added each other, and just last night we killed Skolas without wiping once. If a group of randoms who've only played together on two separate occasions can manage to consistently kill Skolas with little difficulty then I don't see why a group of players who consistently play together can't get their acts together and pull this off. Skolas isn't hard by any means; the fight just requires good timing, foresight, and communication, which is something I'd expect an MMO veteran to be experienced with.
The factor that annoys me the most is the level disadvantage. We had to deal with this during hard Crota as well, and even though that wasn't terribly difficult, I still feel it was a cop out. It's an artificial difficulty multiplier, and completely uncreative on Bungie's part.
I can't say that I disagree with you on this one. I complained about the artificial difficulty in CE as soon as hard mode dropped. I don't mind a difficult raid, but I'd prefer the difficulty to come from new obstacles, threats, or a structural redesign. Not beefed up baddies.
There is also the issue with the rewards. For such a grueling fight, there is really very little reward.
Destiny's entire loot system is something I have an issue with, so I'm not going to touch on this too much, but you're right. The rewards for Skolas leave a lot to be desired unless you're desperate for Etheric Light. Ultimately I do find the fight to be an enjoyable experience and it's certainly doable. Just pay attention to the points I mentioned above and find competent teammates to work with. Then you'll be good to go.

the fact that they were going to make a hard raid for crota's end and make it 33 when it takes so much crap to make it to 32 I stopped playing destiny and could wait for the house of wolves

You're the type of person we need working high up in bungie. The person that sees the mistakes and changes them, making a more smooth and comfortable environment for the player while also imposing a challenge. I wish there was influence like this within every game... But I hope your opinion is noticed, and it seems to be in this forum, congrats on being in Highest Rated category :)

I agree with most of the things you said. Making an encounter hard with doing it 1 level higher is just not make sense. It feels me like the Bungie don't know how to do a hard encounter and they just put 1 level higher mobs around. Skolas fight is not so hard actually but it takes too long to finish it anyway. The only coordination for Skolas fight is just telling how many seconds left for the debuff on you and it's switching line. And if you do it correct the rest is about just killing 1 level higher mobs which I believe no need any coordination or team work to do it so. All you do is taking cover and shooting anything moves you see and avoid captains rushing you. You can even talk about your life when killing ads and maybe you can say your teammates " captain watch out! " meanwhile. =) Despite I love the game how it runs. With all selection of weapons, using supers, jumping, damage types etc. all of those make you play more variant way. So it just fun even if you just kill mobs around. I already have everything from skolas 3 exotic weapons, legendary weapons with burn. I even can't use my etheric lights anymore, nothing left to upgrage. But I keep playing 'cause the gameplay is fun itself. And now can't wait for the The Taken King to be released. Sorry for grammer mistakes and spelling errors if any..
