Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It's a cliche and not even really true, but it is an apt description of the Skolas fight. After banging my head against the wall for 3 hours last night, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm not the type to normally come to the forums to complain, but I feel it's warranted this time.
For the record, I have beaten Skolas twice: once on the Arc burn week, and once last week (with a Warlock and Titan respectively). So I've beaten him both pre and post patch. Not to mention many hours of trying to do it both pre and post patch and failing. I know the strategy, I know the mechanics, I have all the right weapons, and I don't suck. I'm no MLG pro or anything, but I'm far from casual. I have no trouble completing any endgame content in Destiny.
My issue isn't that the fight is hard, it is and it should be. My issue is that it isn't fun, it's frustrating. As an MMO veteran, I welcome the use of mechanics instead of bullet sponge bosses. I love that you have to communicate and work as a team to complete it. However, I feel that there is just too much for most teams to handle. Consider all the things to worry about: Skolas, the adds, the Devouring Essence, the Mines, the modifiers, and level disadvantage. None of these is any more concerning than any other, my opinion (and I stress MY OPINION) is that there are simply too many things to worry about for the majority of players, especially on teams with inconsistent rosters.
The factor that annoys me the most is the level disadvantage. We had to deal with this during hard Crota as well, and even though that wasn't terribly difficult, I still feel it was a cop out. It's an artificial difficulty multiplier, and completely uncreative on Bungie's part. With such drastic penalties for being "underleveled" for a fight, like those that exist in Destiny as a whole, there really is no reason for any endgame encounter to be at a higher level that we are. I think even at level 34 it would still require teamwork and communication to defeat Sokolas and deal with all the other mechanics, but it would remove a lot of the frustration of being two-shotted by a random add. I think this would allow many more teams to complete the activity while not making it so easy that it's a joke.
There is also the issue with the rewards. For such a grueling fight, there is really very little reward. You are not guaranteed any gear or weapons, and the treasure chests are no different than those in any other PoE encounter. For going 9-0 in Trials you are guaranteed an elemental primary, an exotic, and whatever other goodies you get out of the Lighthouse chest. It is very hard to go 9-0, so those rewards are appropriate. Defeating Skolas is also very hard, but the rewards are lackluster at best. Considering the way the rewards are currently in PoE, there really is no reason for the fight to be that difficult.
There will be those that say the fight is fine as is, that the level disadvantage is just a part of the fight and we should just deal with it. I also expect a fair amount of "git gud scrub" and "filthy casual" remarks from the uncomfortably high percentage of immature people on the forums. My counter to the former is that Vault of Glass was hard, and fun, and rewarding, and there was no level disadvantage. The raid was level 30, and as long as you were level 30 you were on an even playing field. To the latter I will simply ignore you as I ignore the opinions of anyone not able to hold an adult conversation.
I know Bungie will not change the Skolas encounter any further, and this is not some ultimatum that if they do not concede to my wishes I will quit the game.. I love this game, and I will keep playing it. My only goals in writing this are to vent my own frustration and hopefully find some other Guardians that feel similarly. If Bungie, by some random act of the universe, did read this, I would only ask that you consider those not it the upper echelon of gaming prowess when designing endgame activities. I am an MMO veteran so I understand that those types of activities should be challenging, but they should also be attainable by more than a small percentage of the player base.
If you have no trouble beating Skolas three times every week, good for you. I truly am glad you have the skill and consistent team needed to do that. This post is not for you, and I hope you understand that in the end this is a game, and it should be fun. Right now, in my opinion, Skolas is not fun, it is a hot mess of frustration. I have a feeling I'm not alone in that opinion.

I agree a to some extent. Rewards need an adjustment. Bullet sponges need to go. I personally would like to see an increase in etheric light from 1 to maybe 3 or 4. Gives a little extra motivation to complete it.

I want to test the chaos with my team, but I am not lvl 34 =( some want to see the earth shine, or however that goes. others, want to see it BURN!!!

The thing that bothers me about Skolas is the same thing that bothered me about Crota. Once we are all level 35 the encounter will be a joke just like the hard Crota raid is a joke now. It was only ever hard because of the level disadvantage. You only need people who know what they're doing because we're all underleveled. The Atheon encounter is still harder than Crota is now or Skolas will be when the level cap increases.

The fight really isn't a challenge at all, beat it first try no wipes 2 days ago and beat it yesterday with 3 wipes I believe. You just need a little communication and that's about it. (Every time I've beaten it I've done it with ransoms from te forum) The only thing I agree with you on is the loot. It's complete shit tht we aren't garunteed anything. At least we should always get an elemental primary. I've beaten skolas 3 times now and only gotten 1 elemental primary.

2 RepliesEdited by TrulyDontCare: 6/27/2015 3:30:04 PMThat's not the definition of insanity. It's something Einstein said. I stopped reading after that sentence. tl/dr in⋅san⋅i⋅ty /insæniti:/ noun relatively permanent disorder of the mind

1 ReplyThis is only a saying. It is not a true definition. Einstein started this trend.

I'm in the same boat as you with the butt rewards you get. It's not worth my time for shitty rewards... I'll just keep going 9-0 in trials for my weekly fix of loot. Even tho I have all the trials shit too... :/
-
If you try different things you're in the clear, you may win that way too.
-
I agree with you. This is why I have no interest in the Skolas fight. Beat it 4 times and no desire to do it anymore.
-
Exactly I've tried a few times and couldn't beat him. I think it isn't too bad until the mines come and then it just gets too crazy being a level below your enemies.
-
3 RepliesInstead of level disadvantage would you prefer the enemies be level 34 but are all majors?
-
I agree with you 100%! I wont be playing Skolas for a long time until I forget the stupid experience! first try we got disconnected at Skolas & guess what? no check points! so we quit! second try we were a team of all 34s with maxed Gallys. we unloaded all our G shots (21 rockets) on ONE CAPTAIN and he was still coming at us (not to mention the range on his shotgun)! terrible design!

That's Destiny in a nutshell. Here it's summed up nicely http://youtu.be/etSLbQPzT4o

5 RepliesQuestion for OP: if they made rewards better. Maybe like a guaranteed exotic and/or elemental primary, would you be OK with the difficulty. If not, what rewards would you need for it to be worth?
-
I haven't been able to try skolas post nerf but it looks far simpler than a lot o WoW mythic raids
-
My problem is the rewards you get for completion. You should get an almost guaranteed exotic if you have a treasure key after beating skolas, but you get shit every time, not even worth completing IMO.
-
It's your own damn fault for not having max ghorn. Fûcking scrub get off the forums, take your disc outside and break it; you don't deserve to play this game anymore. Get ghorn and max that shit before you ever even try to play again noob. (I'm kidding don't worry I can't even attempt Skolas)

Exactly why I stopped playing Skolas. Building random teams yields random results. I beat him every week before the patch, and once after the patch, but sometimes it took hours to do, sometimes it was quick, sometimes I quit and tried again later. I stopped because the rewards are not worth the time. I have the three exotics, so elemental primaries are the only thing to get.
-
Only hard part for me is finding the motivation to play it. Agree the rewards are pretty lame.

Edited by Knox19Delta: 6/27/2015 3:19:54 AMAbsolutely hate this expansion. Takes to long, team mates get mad. Am an average player and I do this for fun. I can handle the fight but like the above poster said I miss raiding.
-
I agree tbh in exact same boat I have beaten skolas plenty but the frustration of trying to find a group capable, the time it takes and the shady rewards makes it not enjoyable... It most certainly isn't the most fun activity like some are suggesting, archon priest with a scorch cannon and a level higher is what it is... It's no fun... The mechanics and the things going on in raid boss fights are fun, working out strategies etc and the rewards were always worth it, in my opinion this isn't
-
My team knows all of the mechanics, exactly how they work, and exactly when to do them, but after 3 hours of wipes, we had to give up. It's just the level 35 adds and the awful modifiers. The notorious instakilling yellow-bar captains can only be killed with a very well timed shotgun attack(harder because of small arms modifier) and the yellow-bar servitors are damn near invincible. Not to mention that backing into a dreg trying to dismantle a mine is instant death as well due to lightswitch.

1 ReplyPOE is very boring. The only fight that is fun is Skolas. You need some serious team work and communication. You pretty much need to do the run perfect. One mistake can cause you to wipe. I enjoy a challenge. But I agree with you. The rewards are weak.
