The Definition of Insanity...

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It's a cliche and not even really true, but it is an apt description of the Skolas fight. After banging my head against the wall for 3 hours last night, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm not the type to normally come to the forums to complain, but I feel it's warranted this time. For the record, I have beaten Skolas twice: once on the Arc burn week, and once last week (with a Warlock and Titan respectively). So I've beaten him both pre and post patch. Not to mention many hours of trying to do it both pre and post patch and failing. I know the strategy, I know the mechanics, I have all the right weapons, and I don't suck. I'm no MLG pro or anything, but I'm far from casual. I have no trouble completing any endgame content in Destiny. My issue isn't that the fight is hard, it is and it should be. My issue is that it isn't fun, it's frustrating. As an MMO veteran, I welcome the use of mechanics instead of bullet sponge bosses. I love that you have to communicate and work as a team to complete it. However, I feel that there is just too much for most teams to handle. Consider all the things to worry about: Skolas, the adds, the Devouring Essence, the Mines, the modifiers, and level disadvantage. None of these is any more concerning than any other, my opinion (and I stress MY OPINION) is that there are simply too many things to worry about for the majority of players, especially on teams with inconsistent rosters. The factor that annoys me the most is the level disadvantage. We had to deal with this during hard Crota as well, and even though that wasn't terribly difficult, I still feel it was a cop out. It's an artificial difficulty multiplier, and completely uncreative on Bungie's part. With such drastic penalties for being "underleveled" for a fight, like those that exist in Destiny as a whole, there really is no reason for any endgame encounter to be at a higher level that we are. I think even at level 34 it would still require teamwork and communication to defeat Sokolas and deal with all the other mechanics, but it would remove a lot of the frustration of being two-shotted by a random add. I think this would allow many more teams to complete the activity while not making it so easy that it's a joke. There is also the issue with the rewards. For such a grueling fight, there is really very little reward. You are not guaranteed any gear or weapons, and the treasure chests are no different than those in any other PoE encounter. For going 9-0 in Trials you are guaranteed an elemental primary, an exotic, and whatever other goodies you get out of the Lighthouse chest. It is very hard to go 9-0, so those rewards are appropriate. Defeating Skolas is also very hard, but the rewards are lackluster at best. Considering the way the rewards are currently in PoE, there really is no reason for the fight to be that difficult. There will be those that say the fight is fine as is, that the level disadvantage is just a part of the fight and we should just deal with it. I also expect a fair amount of "git gud scrub" and "filthy casual" remarks from the uncomfortably high percentage of immature people on the forums. My counter to the former is that Vault of Glass was hard, and fun, and rewarding, and there was no level disadvantage. The raid was level 30, and as long as you were level 30 you were on an even playing field. To the latter I will simply ignore you as I ignore the opinions of anyone not able to hold an adult conversation. I know Bungie will not change the Skolas encounter any further, and this is not some ultimatum that if they do not concede to my wishes I will quit the game.. I love this game, and I will keep playing it. My only goals in writing this are to vent my own frustration and hopefully find some other Guardians that feel similarly. If Bungie, by some random act of the universe, did read this, I would only ask that you consider those not it the upper echelon of gaming prowess when designing endgame activities. I am an MMO veteran so I understand that those types of activities should be challenging, but they should also be attainable by more than a small percentage of the player base. If you have no trouble beating Skolas three times every week, good for you. I truly am glad you have the skill and consistent team needed to do that. This post is not for you, and I hope you understand that in the end this is a game, and it should be fun. Right now, in my opinion, Skolas is not fun, it is a hot mess of frustration. I have a feeling I'm not alone in that opinion.

  • You are definitely not alone. Making endgame encounters 1 level higher than the maximum level of the players is just lazy, there is no other word for it. It seems like keeping us at a level disadvantage & random glitches is the only way Bungle can make anything challenging for us anymore. I'm not sure how the round modifiers are chosen but they need more thought put into them. Seriously, Small arms & Lightswitch is a joke. Not only do you hamstring our special & heavy weapons you then give our enemies the ability to 1HK us with their melee. Let the VoG team make the endgame content from now on, they are the only ones in your dev team who can make something good. VoG Heroic is still alot harder than CE heroic, once we were the same level as the enemies in Crota's end it has become a cakewalk. Pick up your act bungle....

    • My group can't even get past room 4 (first Fallen room), when 4 shots from a 365 Gjally doesn't take down a Captain and you get 2 shotted from across the map while being invisible, there's something wrong. Like you said, just not fun. We can run through a Raid in an hour (VoG) or less (Crota) and get actual good loot, just no point for the pain of PoE 35 it sounds like.

      • Thanks for taking the time to state your opinion and position on the Skolas encounter, instead of ranting and bitching! I will take your view into account as I contemplate my first attempt at killing Skolas.

      • Calm down. All you people complaining about Skolas must suck. Seriously, he's not that hard. Do you have 2-3 people with Gjallarhorn? If yes, then you should complete it in the first 2-3 runs. If no, then buy any vendor rocket launcher and you should complete it in 1-10 runs (only if you're really bad though). You want to know something actually insane? Completing Crota solo hard as a level 32. I did it. Twice. (Though one time I got lagged out in the last 2 hits.) If solar burn was still active, Skolas would be solo-able. Unfortunately, he's only 2-3 manable now, but he's still extremely easy.
And before anyone says that my PoE K/D is horrible, I tried for many, many hours to solo him in the first week of HoW release.
• I have beaten Skolas both pre and post patch as well... i agree that it really isn't much fun and the loot isn't that great... but in all honesty prison of elders as a whole isn't that fun. PoE pales in comparison to the raids and with the amount of cheating going on in ToO there really isn't any point to playing the game anymore after beating Skolas a few times.

        • If you've already beaten skolas before there's really no need to go and replay it. The rewards are possibly the worst drops you could receive in the game. NONE of the primaries have decent perks. Even the elder cipher weapons are underwhelming but as an exotic collector, I got my ciphers and haven't played since.

          • Yeah, Skolas sucks. Even when I beat him I feel like it was a waste of time. Rewardsate garbage, and the Elder Ciphers are worthless. Thank God VoG is still fun.

              • OP, I completely agree with you 100%. As somebody who already had their fair share of beating Skolas, it just isn't fun but tedious. The mechanics were changed but not in a way that's still ethical. The rewards suck, the mechanics suck, and the lack of checkpoints suck. In all honesty the POE was a great idea but it lacks replay ability like the raids do.

                • You hit the nail on the head. The singular boss fight is unnecessarily grueling and I'm sure that the statistics would show a low completion rate as well as an extremely long completion time on average. On top of that, or maybe because of that, it's not particularly fun. After running it post-fix last week, I can't bring myself to do it again this week - regardless of reward (which is not commensurate with the difficulty IMO). I think I have Skolas PTSD. Anyone who says "oh it's easy," instantly looses credibility with me because I know it's not. If you have a really good team - one that you may play with regularly and have good chemistry - the fight can be managed in a reasonable amount of time. Put together three guys that have never beat skolas, but just want to have fun and try - forget it.

                  • I feel the same way. The ads are extremely annoying because they can walk right up to you while you are focusing on skolas and two shot you. Me and my 2 friends tried for about 9 hours. Apparently the only way to do it is to have a max gally and I haven't be fortunate enough to get one.

Not true at all! There are many variables to take into account with your and your team mates performances per attempt at Skolas. For example your friend might have missed a shot on an mob that caused you to wipe. The next time they might not miss. Your saying would only be true if you was running at skolas and trying to dance him to death. In my opinion I love the fight, health isn't that bad requires communication and team work to accomplish.

                        • I agree with the loot drops. For the current hardest endgame content the rewards are terrible I honestly think that for a raid/nightfall level activity we should be rewarded accordingly. Yes we technically can get the elder cipher for a guaranteed exotic but those exotics are somewhat underwhelming and lackluster compared to thorn, red death, gally, and icebreaker (tried to get both good pve and pvp exotics) (I'm still gonna get queen breakers bow and Lord of wolves regardless.) As for difficulty I don't find it terrible. There is alot to worry about but with the right plan going in any team shouldn't have too much trouble with skolas.. I ran the fight with a guy on my friends list and one of his friends (his friend only spoke Spanish and I am very limited in my Spanish language skills). That said it took us 3 attempts to get our chemistry together and find a niche that allowed us to down him. We had a lot of deaths and the fight was rather long but it is manageable for pug teams.

                        • Agreed. Its not fun...at all.Thought that was the point of playing a game?! Skolas needs a checkpoint system.I understand Bungie's decision to leave them out,but they need to be more creative and figure out a way to allow players who have done the previous levels of the fight to leave and return at a later time to complete it,as opposed to having to start all over again. And yes the loot drop sucks compared to ToO

                          • I agree a to some extent. Rewards need an adjustment. Bullet sponges need to go. I personally would like to see an increase in etheric light from 1 to maybe 3 or 4. Gives a little extra motivation to complete it.
