Actually I quit just before the interview but I think you're missing the bigger picture here. This is more about how the devs treat their loyal customers and what their real priorities are.
That being said, if none of that concerns you and you think the base game is worth the price, I'm certainly not going to try to convince you otherwise! That's a decision you have to make and I sincerely hope it meets or exceeds your expectations!

I get why its a big deal, but its crazy that about 20 websites have published articles on it, and these forums and reddit have just been flooded with soo much negativity due to a knee jerk reaction of a blatantly bad PR interview. At least no other game developer will do dumb shit like this in the future. Let the designers design and the community managers do their jobs.
-
Yeah I know it does seem like an extreme reaction but that is probably just a consequence of living in the digital age. It seems like just about any pr gaff can easily go viral these days. But I feel like for a lot of the players and media, this just seems like a final admission of a predatorial business philosophy that we had feared all along. That's my take anyways...

Activision has been gouging CoD players for years with DLC's of only multipleyer maps for $15-$20 per map pack. How did they not expect Destiny's DLC's to be priced about where the maximum a consumer would pay to fall?
-
This dlc costs the same price as the vanilla game (with less than half the content) for European players. But what I think enraged players the most was that Bungie knew vets would want these exclusives, intentionally made them only available in the collector's edition, and then unapologetically stated that, if we wanted them badly enough, we would pay for all of our content from day one a second time. That's as bad as microtransactions and really sets a terrible precedent. If nothing else, it certainly doesn't scream customer appreciation...

But Deej said they will state in the weekly update exactly how they will reward existing players. While it may be in response to the outrage, there also hasnt been an update since all of TTK details dropped, so they may have had these plans already. Im not familiar with the pricing structure in europe, so unfortunately i cant say how different that economy or gaming atmosphere is.

At best, they just suck at marketing/PR and didn't realize that equivalent veteran bonuses would be pertinent to announce at the same time that they announced exclusive bonuses for new players. At worst, they are just in damage control mode and want to give the illusion of addressing the veterans' plight without actually intending to change the price structure. smh...

Thoughts after the update?

Edited by The Stranger: 6/25/2015 2:47:55 AMWell if I wasn't convinced of their pricing strategy before, I certainly am now. Bungie played this perfectly! They already made all the money they were going to from selling the exclusives in an $80 bundle - DeeJ mentioned that they were nearly sold out of collector's editions yesterday. Now they've made the digital exclusives available for $20 (the same price as TDB and HoW, btw) for everyone who wasn't quite willing to pay for the $80 bundle. This is price discrimination to a T! The trick is to slowly and incrementally drop the price (without ever revealing if or when drops will occur) so that each segment of consumers buys it when it just affordable enough for them. My assumption is that they will lower the price again shortly after launch to catch the players that are still on the fence at $20. XD

A guy on reddit posted about a value comparison to other industry microtransactions. Its about the equivalent of $2-$3 per item, but instead of selling them separately, its a package deal only for $20. Pretty legitimate response to me. A mistake made, backlash, an apology, a reduction of price for OPTIONAL content comparable to industry standards, though, im sure there will be planty of people with their torches still lit.
-
I'm not saying it's not helpful for players but it's certainly not a concession for bungie. :-) They are certainly wading into the realm of pay-to-win now by clearly selling xp bonuses- everybody's got there own opinion on that. And who's to say whether the apology was "sincere" or whether they plan to better "value" their core players. I hope they will do more to restore the bungie legacy but I'm not sticking around regardless, for a lot more reasons than just this one issue. Anyways, maybe they'll announce some tangible improvements tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To be honest, why do we put so much emphasis into rewarding the veteran players? They just announced that long term players will recieve a bonus but you still want more? This is the type of entitlement thing that baffles me. Im glad that they keep releasing new things. It is a reward to me to keep being able to put this game in and have a blast with my current circle of friends. I dont need extra shaders or emotes or exp boosts to keep me playing. You play their game, they offer more to keep you playing via dlc's bc enough people love this game enough to want it to stay relevant, and we need some sort of bonuses on top of bonuses? I dont remember any other game that literally kept giving out free stuff just because youre there a year later...(granted i dont play mmo's often nor long enough, but my guess is that this wouldnt be the case. Even if it were, bungie has a sort-of mmo model, but they have avoided such comparison)
-
Well maybe I'm dating myself but it used to be that you earned new maps, weapons, and cosmetic items by being a dedicated player and overcoming the game's different challenges. So yeah, I do get irritated when a developer looks at every little shader and emote as a chance to drain a few more dollars from their paying customers. I don't mind that the developers rightly have to charge for dlc's to keep the game progressing but I detest any microtransactions that create winners and losers based on who has the most disposable income. Unfortunately, that seems to be the direction that Destiny is heading. If you and others enjoy the game and continue to support it with your purchases, that's perfectly fine. Personally, I'll be more than content with the games I have until I can completely lose myself in Fallout 4. :-)
-
I dont think any of this indicates that destiny is moving to pay-to-win, as all of these things will be basically cosmetic.
-
XP bonuses give a distinct advantage. It's just a slippery slope that, historically, Activision has no regard for.
-
Distinct advantage? Thats being a little loose. You are still going to need a ton of bounties to level exotics. A person with an exp bonus who plays 2 or 3 times a week will get about as much exp as i do since i play alot. And it takes about 12-18 solid bounties to lvl up a new legendary now, so depending on the boost, i dont think it would make a huge deal, especially with their new streamlined etheric light system. Any other game i could see it, but its really splitting hairs in Destiny.
-
Yeah it is splitting hairs. But, like I said, I'm more worried about where this is leading - for Destiny and the video game industry as a whole.
