I believe we made Variks the true kell of kells

As Skolas is clearly not the kell of kells, the question remains as to who of the fallen actually is. The Kings kell seems to have no interest in uniting the fallen or giving them peace. I'm not even sure if the exile have become big enough to even have a kell yet. The remaining two houses are devils, which appear on the same boat as the kings, and judgement, which have currently only one member. My first clue towards the assumption that Variks is destined to be kell of kells comes from the grimore card you gain after completing the kell of kells mission. This card goes over a conversation between Petra and Variks, where Variks points out that all of the recent fallen activities have only led to death and destruction, such as the devils losing Sepiks Prime and the winter losing Draksis. The closest house to achieving any sort of peace is the house of judgement. Petra then continues to joke that maybe Variks is the kell of kells. The only problem with this theory is that Variks is only a vandal, and is not big enough to be a kell. This is where Skolas' Elder Cipher comes in. When you obtain it, Variks obviously views this as a very important item, and asks you to go through a couple of tasks to help fix it. Afterwords, he is willing to reward you with some of the weapons of his people. When you give the Cipher to him for the waiting portion of the bounty, there is text on the bounty that explains that ciphers are how the fallen absorb either into themselves and grow. With a kells cipher, Variks could become kell sized and is currently the most likely kell to actually bring the fallen peace. Keep in mind, this is only a theory. Feel free to add to this theory, disprove it, or bring up theories of your own in the comments EDIT 1: a few people have pointed out that the dregs promise grimore card talks about how a fallen of lowest class would become the most powerful fallen in history. Variks fits this description in two ways, his top arms, the ones that do not regrow, were torn off by Skolas. Secondly, in the Skolas captured card, he mentions that he possesses dreg strength, and instead of seeing it as a shameful thing he seems to hold it with pride. Keep the replies coming, lots of interesting stuff here

I really like the Fallen. I hope they soon realize that with war, they will become extinct. As much as they feel we stole the Traveller from them and as much as they hate us, we are going to win... We have the Traveller's blessing, not them. I hope they become an ally in the future. Would love to release the Archon Priest and have him kick ass with us,.

              • The only problem is, larger amounts of ether make Fallen more aggressive and ruthless Varyks might be the Kell that unites all the fallen under the House Judgement banner, and destroys the city, and has the speakers head on his staff. Or he could unite the fallen, has allies with the reef and the city against the real darkness of the Vex and Hive. Causing the traveler(or great machine has they know it) to accept them back into the light. I could see both scenarios playing out

                • There doesn't have to be a kell of kells. The house of kings are now by far the most powerful and the house of exiles still have no organization (they are pretty much a terrorist group lol). Variks literally command almost no one. Maybe 10-20 fallen he commands. He's not even a kell. The house of kings are still building themselves up.

                  • I don't get the feeling that Variks WANTS to be a Kell, much less the Kell of Kells, in one of the missions he said that "working with you and petra feels.....right, somehow." that could mean nothing, but it could also mean many things. Either way, Kell of Kells or not, I really like Variks and I would LOVE to get into a mission or something where he fights with us!

                    • I am just looking forward to seeing more from the house of kings. So far all we have seen were barons. A fallen house completely controlling another and making them their puppet, right infront of us on earth, is pretty intriguing.

If Varik isn't the Kell of Kells it's probably likely that YOU made him so by giving him the elder cipher. The kell legend after all is a house of judgement legend and Varik is very clever (his story about how he got the staff for instance). I wouldn't have a problem with him being the Kell of Kells (though it's likely he expects you to fill that position). He is the most likely to make the Fallen earths allies instead of an enemy that you have to constantly look over your shoulder for. Sadly I doubt Bungie have the story telling ability to come up with a nice rounded story progression like this.... Edit: If they did I wuld expect to see the fallen replaced by the taken on earth after the TK DLC drops and the archon priest strike to be replaced with a taken substitute and winters run to be replaced with something like winter's assault, where you take back the winter ship from the taken with the help of the remaining winter fallen (picture a mission like halo where you fight alongside grunts). Another quick edit: It would be super cool to arrive on the winter's assault strike and have fallen dregs yelling "It's the Kell!" as you arrive! And then interjecting at odd moments during battle phrases like "The Kell will sort them out" or "You're for it now that the Kell has arrived"

                        • But Skolas severed his upper arms, which are the ones that do not regenerate. No fallen house would respect a 2 armed kell.

                          • For those who think that Skolas is Kell of Kells, the prophesy of House Rain clearly states that the enemies of the Kell of Kells will fall before him like rain. Seeing as you beat his ass not once but twice (the second time actually killing him) that means Skolas cannot be the Kell of Kells. The only people who match that description are Variks, The Guardian, and the Queen. Variks however also has the Dreg's prophesy on his side, that is the one on the card for Dreg's Promise .

EDIT: I sped read the last paragraphs. I think you should look into the biology of the fallen, apparently the more ether they consume the bigger they become. So with that in mind, although Variks is at present just a vandal, he can become a Kell. I believe that in future Destiny games there will be an allience formed with the fallen and the cabal as I see similarities to their plight.

I don't think Variks is a vandal. I think his title as "House Judgement's Scribe to House Wolves" gives him a unique rank separate from the caste system we've encountered prior to HoW. This is supported by the fact that he wears armor that is unique, not matching any armor from any other Fallen encountered in Destiny, specifically not vandals. On a sort of related note, his top arms have been docked and replaced with prosthetic arms but his bottom arms have not. Dregs have their bottom arms docked and capped (as a punishment for failure or shameful activity). I wonder what would cause a Fallen to lose their top arms and not their bottom ones. This may grant some clue as to his rank/status among the Fallen. Another clue that may be relevant lies in the Dreg's Promise grimoire card. It tells of a legend in which a Fallen at the lowest rank rises to become some sort of demi-god or savior. "I am a marvel with ten thousand arms"

                                • Become a Kell could mean making augmentations to one's body. I'm not entirely sure that the Fallen are totally organic to start with anymore so it wouldn't surprise me if becoming a Kell required new parts being added. As for him not wanting it: a lot of leaders in history got the job because they were the best for it not because they wanted it. The same goes for Prophesy: you rarely see one where the person chosen is one who is seeking glory or fortune, it's usually someone humble and down on their luck. It's pretty obvious that Variks isn't like most Fallen, he wants the best for his people even if it means not fighting and returning the Fallen to the glory they had before they became pirates.

                                • This is what I was thinking too. Reading the Elder Cipher bounty text, you can see how excited Variks is to have access to an elder cipher. Then it speaks of the function of one - to control ether flow and therefore power. Combine that with the Grimoire involving Variks and his apparent despair about the Fallen's near extinction as a race and his own weakness, this theory seems solid. It'd be awesome to have an Aksor styled ally on our side, along with a whole 'new' Fallen House (of Judgement)
