If you care about Destiny you have to read this article [Go read the update]

Sorry for the click-baity title but this is pretty serious. If you want to talk depreciation this isn't what I'm talking about at all. Edit: I also encourage you to sign this petition as it intersects well with this thread. Who knows maybe it will help. Edit 2: I'm hearing threads are being deleted. If you wanna be really cool copy this post in a word document and feel free to paste it as a new thread if it disappears. Don't spam existing threads because that's annoying. Edit 3: Deej has commented that year one players will get "something better" than the collector's edition items and to look forward to the weekly update. Should be interesting to see how this goes down. (Dawn of the Second Day) update 7/11 employee flyer. I encourage you to read this too. "Destiny cons-- are used to paying a premium for downloadable content similar to this quest" In this article, eurogamer interviewed Luke Smith about the worries players have expressed about the taken king both in price points ($40 =/=£40) and in collector's edition exclusives (three armor shaders, exclusives emotes, and continuous XP granting exotic class items) that are only available for players willing to shell out $80, most of which is for content they likely already own. His answers to these questions were illuminating to say the least and rather than give cliffs notes I want you to read it yourself now. Think about what he says. I hope it leaves the same feeling in your gut that it left in mine. When destiny first launched there were three editions: the vanilla game the digital guardian edition and the ghost edition. The vanilla game was the vanilla game, simple enough. The ghost edition was for the high rollers who wanted something nice: their very own red dinklebot and an in game version of it. Cool. For those who wanted all of the in game content but didn't really want to drop more money on physical items there's the digital guardian edition which came with all of the in game items the ghost edition had. Now we have a new release but with a radically different setup. The $40 expansion for owners of both expansions is analogous to the vanilla destiny package from above. Completely fine. The $60 legendary edition is fine. New players should have a bundle for them, this kind of thing happens all the time and while I'm kinda suprised at how cheap it costs, they still have to be competitive against the heavy hitters shipping this season. The collector's editions are where we run into trouble. The physical rewards are analogous to the ghost edition: you either want the strange coin or you don't (well gamestop is out of physical copies so I guess this is no longer a choice). That's fine. The word collector has a certain long term investment attached to the name semantically so you would think it was made with current players in mind. But it comes with the legendary edition which is intended for new players... Alright that's fine I have my ghost I don't really mind the physical items so let's see the equivalent of the digital guardian edition because those shaders look nice, the emotes will liven up the game and the XP class items will lessen the grind and I wouldn't mind spending the halfway point between the $40 and the $80 editions. Except the digital edition of the collector's edition also costs exactly the same as the physical edition: $80 (for less content as the digital version obviously doesnt include the physical items). The digital guardian editon came as a halfway point between the the two editions and included the full destiny experience in game. That was important. Now current players are given two options: go all in on the $80 version, buy what you already own for the exclusive in game items, or buy the $40 version and watch as new players and current players who have more money than brains bypass the grind with their new XP capes for the rest of the game. Not allowing current players the option to buy the taken king by itself with the complete in game content is price gouging. It's also making them artifically inflate their dlc sales as players are buying multiple copies of the dlc that they will never use because guess what? They already own it. And then when an interviewer brings up these frustrations, this is the response we're given. If you care at all you have to be vocal about this. If this succeeds without contest it will be how companies sell content going forward. I'm not calling for a boycott but don't throw your money at them blindly. If you are content with the status quo ask yourself why you enjoy paying more for content you already own? I refuse to pay for what I already have and you should too.

    • I'm pretty sure if people don't own the game by now they never will. Most people who didn't buy it, didn't buy it because the story is weak. TTK won't change this. Dance moves?

          • It's a rip off especially for the Europe/UK gamers - just look at some numbers US new game price = 60$ = 38£ US Destiny DLC = 40$ = 25£ (2/3 rd price of the new game) UK new game price = 40£ = 63$ UK Destiny DLC = 40£ = 63$ (?!?!?!) Product that costs 25£ in US we have to pay 40£, a price you can get a new game on release day. For some of the arrogant Bungie workers, that Sterling Pounds sound "FOREING" to their brains: HOW THE HELL WE HAVE TO PAY 63$ JUST FOR NEW DLC? Not even mentioning a fact you wont get full content That's really disgusting. And I'm out. Hope many of the UK gamers with me.

Its fabulous really I decided to hold off of getting house of wolves for 1-day and I felt like I was playing the beta forcing people to purchase dlc lest they be forgotten and left behind because the way they are spreading out content molds the game to have something like a yearly subscription fee

              •
It's about value. The player's assessment of the value of the content.
As a career economist, I can tell you exactly what is going on here. In economics, this is called price discrimination (less elegantly known as price gouging). Basically they are attempting to price their products at exactly the highest price that consumers are willing to pay. In a market free of monopoly power, this is the #1 way to maximize profits. Bungievision knew there would be a major outcry, but it was predetermined that enough veterans would cave and pay the exorbitant price just for those little exclusives so they would still turn a major profit. Still don't believe me?
If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen.
Open your eyes and vote with your wallet...

                • Regardless of what "even better" things are coming to day 1 players, it won't change the fact that whatever it is Bungie is going to do is only because the interview went sour with Luke Smith, not because Bungie cares to recognize their players. That's why they aren't mentioning anything because they are still in the midst of figuring it out. Thursday Bungie will give us their same standard passive "omg hey look over there!!" not-an-apology that we all tired of hearing. I suppose if anything I should feel thankful that we finally got to hear authenticity from a Bungie representative.

                  • I agree in every way. I probably won't buy the taken king. I bought the ghost edition and love all the little knicknacks, but this is just outrageous. I'm not rebuying shit I already own. That's stupid and it's a waste of money. I may just leave Destiny altogether and grab one of the cooler-looking e3 games. Either way, something needs to be done, no way around that.

                    • One thing's for sure... Bungie has officially lost its unique touch as being a game developer that was also part of the gaming community. It looks like Activision has done to them what EA did to Bioware. No one is safe. Bethesda may be the last refuge. Let us circle the wagons around them and crowdfund Elder Scrolls 6 before it's too late!

                      • I am so pissed I already pre-ordered the new DLC. Had I not, I wouldn't have purchased it after yesterday's interview. Money isn't an issue; I'm a grown adult who earns a large income. And I'm fine with spending money, even $40 on a product that bundles shit I've already purchased. It's the sheer lack of respect that bothers me. Come on, "throw money at the screen"; really? If one of my clients or secretaries talked to me in that tone, there would be a reckoning. As far as Destiny goes, I'll continue to play. I enjoy the game. But I'm not investing anymore money in the game; that's finished. Once the new content gets old, and new DLCs are released, I'll move on and "throw my money" in the direction of another developer.

                        • I also vote to *bump* this post. I'm pretty appalled by reading that interview. He certainly did not sound like a professional in any sense more like a self entitled teenager if you ask me. I have a huge game library spanning three systems so I'd be more than happy to join in on the boycott for July 7th! I'm typing this on my phone so I'll keep it short but Bungie I think it's time to reacquaint yourselves with professionalism. Luke Smith's tone of superiority and arrogance oozed from that interview in such a disgusting manner that it made me pretty much question my whole year playing the game and my preorder of the newest expansion. You guys need a lesson in marketing because this interview is doing the complete opposite for you right now.
