It's not designed specifically for people to switch consoles, it's for people who haven't bought a current Gen console yet. Here is an example: Buyer 1 has a gamecube, ps2 and an Xbox 360. All old Gen consoles with games that are all but dying out. Buyer 1 wants to buy a new console but sees that Ps4 has exclusives on destiny which is the game that is the most appealing so he buys a ps4 and the destiny collectors edition. Sony wins the battle which pays off for them paying extra for exclusives. Buyer 2 has a kid that doesn't have a console and plays buyer 2's old Nintendo 64 games because that wasn't high in the priority list. Buyer 2's kid says that his friends play this game called destiny and so for Christmas buyer 2 goes and gets the destiny edition of the ps4 because it has more content for the same price of its competitor. Buyer 2's son is now happy and feels special for getting exclusives. These aren't great examples but explain why exclusives exist in some form or fashion.

Yea. It sucks for the die hard who only buys from one company but it's a good business model.
