...and has shown me how boring and monotonous it really is. You might think "Nah m8, Destiny is amazing wot you on fgt?" and to that I say break it down. Break down Destiny to what it really is. You fight the same enemies that look slightly different. Do the fallen on Earth act differently compared to the ones on the moon? No! They are different colours and exactly the same.
"But they have new enemies called the taken in the new expansion". No they don't! Their use of the "story" behind the taken is just a pathetic excuse to reuse the assets they already have in the game.
"But BungieVision gives a new areas to explore with new DLCs". Right. Okay keep telling yourself that lie. Everything they bring out as "story" is played on the same path you have played a hundred times over. But woah! It's backwards! HOW ORIGINAL! If they actually put thought into new areas and "story telling" it might, might, be worthy of $5. But $20 each?? Pffft no. Terrible value.
"But it has raids and strikes and new multiplayer maps as well as new weapons". Okay granted that raids are good, even though they are laggy and glitchy. But onto strikes, oh boy. Let's fight some enemies we've already fought a million times to get to a boss that is a bigger enemy we've fought already on the way there! Instead of an actual original design of a boss, Bungie thought "We need an enemy that would put players to the test. I know, why don't we make a boss that looks the same as the enemies we've already made and give it an unnecessarily large amount of health. That'll test their skills". Right. The enemies surrounding the boss are more threatening than the boss itself. Why not put raid-like mechanics for the fight? Oh that's right, that takes work and Bungie runs at the sight of work.
Now onto weapons. The only original ideas of weapons are exotics. All Legendaries are re skinned weapons that have been around since day 1. The only unique weapons are shitty rare weapons that are useless because of their attack. With the addition of Ascension, why even use other Legendaries? Need a PvE primary? Oh I can ascend my Fatebringer, I don't need anything else. Boom! Just from ascending, Legendaries have become useless when you have the best ones. Instead of leaving it behind, you just bring it with you.
It honestly amazing how people forgot what happens at E3 2014 for destiny. Go back and watch it and you'll see how hard we have been butt banged by BungieVision. Taken King gameplay can be seen in it!! What the actual -Blam!-!
Granted PvP is pretty good despite being the most unreliable multiplayer mode I have ever played.
The reason people are "in love with this game" is because you are addicted. Destiny is a giant casino. You can gamble your chances at the gunsmith. What about random drop in crucible? Yep, gambling. Anything that uses the Random-Number-Generator (RNG) is gambling. You are an addict. I know because I played. I have been in a place where you most likely have been where you're just sitting in tower not sure what to do but not wanting to get off. I have been there.
Ask yourself this: when the people used the loot cave at the beginning of the game, that meant that Destiny was worse than or equal to shooting enemies in a hole in the wall, right?
Here's an interview between Luke Smith and EuroGamer who are asking questions that Luke Smith doesn't find particularly appealing:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-06-22-destiny-the-taken-king-director-defends-40-expansion-price-tag
DaCannonnn just made a very good point:
Even atheon and crota are giant versions of a Minotaur and a knight. One of the things that's the most disappointing to me, is not a single boss says anything to you. None of them inspire any reason to kill them other than "well it's what the loading screen said to do". Not even crota or atheon say a single word. In all actuality, not a single enemy ever talks/threatens you. Smh.
His words couldn't be more true
Hedges360 makes an excellent statement:
]I think I'm inclined to agree. Would be interesting to know how many people mistake addiction for "fun" (unconsciously or just refuse to admit it). The ONLY way people can still be playing after 2000+ hours is addiction. The game has little left to offer at that point. I think I'm waking up to that point, but it doesn't change much. Tonight I tried to play two other games but all I wanted to do was play destiny. So I ended up running the daily mission that I have already done multiple times. I do think the only way I could stop playing destiny would be to destroy the disc.
But, although it's a gamble, it's a no lose gamble. So part of me thinks what's the harm?
MufasaLG had this to say
Spot on. You might enjoy this read about bungies addiction model for Destiny.
I have been doing some serious digging, and have stumbled upon a article(http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3085/behavioral_game_design.php) written in 2001 by Bungie's current head of User Research. John Hopson(Head of User Research) holds a Ph.D. in Behavioral and Brain Sciences from Duke University and is currently the chairman of the IGDA Games User Research SIG. Before he was hired by Bungie in 2002, John wrote an article explaining formulas to get gamers addicted to games, which many were based on lab mice experiments. Once you read the article you can see tons of these examples for each of his formulas to get people hooked on a game. I would post each theory in its entirety on here but I feel like that violates the guidelines because its pretty much the whole article. If I can post it that way then let me know, but for now I will post each theory title in the article and summarize it for the lazy and relate it to the destiny formula.
CONTINGENCIES AND SCHEDULES To keep lab rats interested in food and extend the supply of food on hand they limit giving food to the rat to certain circumstances, instead of every time he does what he's supposed to do to get food. You can see this being used in Destiny's reward and loot system. It also mentions giving random power ups which can be related to PvP Heavy Weapon Ammo drops, and how your guaranteed one super in an match without doing good

An interesting read if I may say so myself
NerdDotCom says
What killed Destiny for me is Bungies lack of bonuses to the veteran players. If anything Day oners should get the weapons/class items. We were there when the cryptard gave greens for purples. We were there for the loot issues. We were there through the glitchy raids, the 5 slot bounties, and the meager vault space increase. The failed commendations, the unbalanced (still) weapons, the useless gunsmith. Tell me why people joining a year after the fact get more content and bonuses for $75 when we've dropped more than $100 in some cases.
We get no HoW raid. Only one new grenade per subclass, no new jumps.
PlayStation gets ANOTHER year of exclusives.
As for its MMO "elements" all it has are an MMO's grind. Mark caps, rep grinds, raid loot only once a week. Outside of the grind it contains nothing MMO like.
With the blockbuster game list coming soon, fvck destiny. There is and will continue to be better games.... Titanfall has more content than this...
So, unless something changes in how they view veteran players. I will continue to not play destiny. I'll keep on the forums to see if they change before TTK, but I'll nothold my breath. Incoherent rant over
Post below if you think you can prove me wrong. If you can I'll add you comment in an Edit and add it to why Destiny is good. Good luck with that
EDIT 1: Congratulations ghost_avalon! You are the first to give me a legitimate praise for a concept in the game. This user said that the shooting mechanics and setting (scenery?) are fantastic. And I agree, especially with the SkyBox.
TL;DR
Destiny isn't as good as you think it is because of the points above
12 RepliesEvery game is the same, repetitive thing at heart. Call of Duty is facing people using the same guns on the same maps... over and over again. Halo is the same situation as CoD just different strategies and weapons. All racing games are driving on the same tracks against the same cars... over and over again. If you really look at the games you play, they are just as repetitive as your morning routine. Destiny isn't the only game that is repetitive.

Same could be said about any other game. Just need to "break it down" and make it sound like shit like you do. Halo? Dude on a ringworld fighting same aliens. H1z1? Dude fighting same zombies. Gears? Dude fighting same aliens. Cod? Dude fighting dudes.. or zombies Dying light? Dude fighting zombies. Eso? Dude fighting dudes.. and orcs. Payday? All you do is pull a heist. Gta? All you do is shoot people. Minecraft? All you do is mine and craft the same stuff. Every single game under the sun? However you want to put it.

Edited by Sanctus Michael: 6/28/2015 1:41:54 PMYeah, I wrote something similar in a post. Basically I noted the addiction is similar to Christmas. You're excited to open that present (or chest) and even though you're usually underwhelmed, that anticipation and excitment is like an endorphin rush. Why else does bungie use so many damn chests (mat chests in patrol, poe treasure room, etheric chests, raid chests, etc.)? So many chests everywhere. It's the anticipation. There was even an old heinz katchup commercial with anticipation as the theme song as the thick rich katchup poured from the glass bottle. Lol. For young people, katchup used to be in glass bottles that you couldn't squeeze to get it to come out faster and it took forever to get katchup out of that bottle. Lol Point is, even in the 80s the appeal of anticipation was recognized. Even the rng of NF, PvP, and weekly heroic... the excitement... "omg... what am I going to get?" It's like Christmas. Dude, it's Christmas everyday. And no matter how disappointed we are, that brief moment of anticipation is an endorphin response. Idk... seems that way to me at least. Almost no one replied to that post, guess most people disagreed, but it seems so obvious to me.

7 RepliesHoly shit you wrote an entire novel nobody is going to read good job.

2 RepliesBut what if we actually enjoy playing Destiny....

6 RepliesEdited by Ori: 6/22/2015 5:43:14 AMOf course the Fallen on the Moon and Earth look the same. They're the same -blam!-ing things, what did you expect? Are you going to go to Chicago and expect different looking human beings? Sure, each person has very distinct features but that's real life. If you're looking for that kind of diversity in a video game, see yourself out and sell all of your games. What a stupid thing to nitpick about. As for your complaints about the game's repetitive nature, well any and every game can get repetitive. Besides, this is Bungie's first attempt at making a game like this. They made Halo, and although they made good stories, it was mostly multi-player focused. It'll get better, not everything is a one hit wonder. These guys at Bungie aren't Blizzard or Bethesda and everyone should know that. Also, complaints about Crota and Atheon being large versions of other enemies is just as nitpicky. So many games do it, but it's a problem when Bungie does it? Come on man. I thought the designs for Crota and Atheon were sick. If you want really cool looking bosses, play the Souls series.

1 ReplyOh look another one of these topics.

1 ReplyAbout Dacannon's comment, did you not play HoW? There is definitely incentive to kill this bastards because the fang called me a... Well it was an insult.
-
1 ReplyIts OK, you don't enjoy a game it is a matter of opinion. Don't really understand why you feel the need to go onto the forums to say why you don't like it, even though your points aren't original. Saying such doesn't help anyone and just makes you seem rather sad, trying to be edgy... If you require attention than just say so Buddy it'll all be OK.
-
I would be surprised if they only had one behavioral scientist on staff, addictiveness is almost the entire product they've sold us. Destiny is a sophisticated, expensive version of Candy Crush. One of these days I'll switch to Halo 5, but for now I can't even complain, I'm paying about 15 cents per hour. Admittedly, that's going to jump to about 25 cents per hour when TTK drops, but as exploitative relationships go, that's pretty benign.
-
1 ReplyTL;DR I have an opinion. If your opinion is different than mine, you have a psychological issue and are objectively wrong.
-
You read my mind
-
All I do is play three nightfalls on Tuesday and return to Watch Dogs for the rest of the week.
-
3 RepliesPacman provided plenty of entertainment back in the day and that was just as repetitive. In fact go through every generation of games all the top ones have been the same I.e Sonic, Mario etc. I fail to see your point. Unless you are moaning for the sake of moaning.
-
Didn't even read but original poster enjoys the company of men.

It's the formula of tiny game to large loot table that sucks. I beat the story mode, thinking this is when the game begins, only to find out the endgame is just the early game, with modifiers. It's insane that my friends list is still running the devils lair, over a year after we played it in the beta. I know its the nightfall, but its absurd.
-
3 RepliesSometimes, when i come home from work, all I want to do is shoot the shit out of aliens. If that's my addiction then I'm aight with this.
-
I'll just be clear, MMOs have already done this. A lot. The difference is that this time, it's on console. The end.
-
Yeah there is only so long you can do PVE! Especially once u have all the rewards only play Destiny for trials and PvP now although the lag is starting to get to me, my Destiny addiction is comeing to an end I think
-
Wow. Just wow OP was right the Taken are shown in older footage. They even say you will be able to go to Saturn.
-
What do you want the bosses to look like? Freakin Honey Boo Boo? They're all the same species so one of them isn't going to look super different. All fallen are the same just bigger/smaller by drinking ether. Vex I could see different because they're robots, and Cabal at just more armored Cabal.
-
Found it guys, the Taken King can be seen in the 2013 ViDoc 'Here in the Wild' around the 30 second mark

6 RepliesEdited by ItsMihali: 6/22/2015 7:49:13 AMTight shooting mechanics, fun abilities, challenging enemies that are different compared to 90% of shooters, MMO elements in an FPS, loadout that you can personalise to the nth degree, unique PvP, clans, hoard mode with the aforementioned responsive gameplay, raid mechanics in a FPS format, sound design, graphical design, theme: distopian space shooter, lore. That's off the top of my head.
