If you are using Comcast's Xfinity broadband service with the 50/105Mbps plans, or what I've now learned BT and its Fon public Wi-Fi, you also have a Wi-Fi router that, by default, is sending out a public wireless signal that any Comcast or BT internet subscriber may use. This is a problem, because that public signal IS eating into your data limit (250GB/month) and your data rate. I discovered this after getting a weasel error, coming back in and having incessant audio artifacts and seeing the "Contacting Destiny Servers" all last night. I just got my Xbox One and was absolutely furious. Ended up dropping a 100.io meet, didnt get to smash the lvl. 32 PoE. BAH!! Open network 👍, but at 0.24Mbps 👎 because of some cheap asses and a money hungry NBC.
However, for Comcast users, there is relieve. If you red bar, but you are on the even keel or you have an Open NAT, but still get hosed, please follow these steps:
For those of you who don't want XFINITY or BT sneakily sending out a second WiFi signal from your modem for the general public to use, here is how to disable it.
1) Log into your account at comcast.net
2) Choose "My Account" from the top row
3) Then Choose "User & Preferrences" on the next page
4) Next, under "Service Adress", click on the link "Manage XFINITY WiFi"
5) A window pops up giving you a choice to disable it, choose disable and save.
For BT users, I've got you covered as well:
You will need your BT Yahoo! Mail username and password. If you opt out you will lose the benefit of unlimited Wi-Fi usage from BT Wi-fi hotspots.
To opt-out of BT Wi-fi simply follow the steps below:
1.Go to www.bt.com/btfon
2.Click on the Check Status link on the left of the page
3.Enter your @btinternet.com email address and password and click on the Check Status button
4.Scroll down to the opt-out section.
5.Enter your @btinternet.com email address and password again and click Send
6.You will then see a notice confirming that the opt-out request has been accepted. Please follow the instructions in this message
After doing this my self, my Xbox One is getting 47Mbps down, 12Mbps up and my quality of life is restored.
I hope this helps some of you. A lot of you, actually.
Edit: clearly this does pertain to any guardians outside the USA or UK, but it may be applicable. If you find your ISP does to same, share on this post how to disable it. For the Community!
Big Ups to: Bietan for suggesting to otherS how to smite BT Fon. Props, brother!
