Let's get this straight: Skolas encounter was NOT nerfed

[b]TL;DR at the bottom[/b] There seems to be a lot of confusion about what happened to Skolas with the update from Bungie this week. I'm here to end the confusion. Many of you think that he was nerfed. It's quite the opposite. Let's look at the facts [b]1) Bungie is eliminating burns from future modifier possibilities on the Skolas encounter [/b] [b]2) Bungie is nerfing Skolas' health to compensate for the lack of burn[/b] [b]3) Bungie is making the ads spawn at predictable intervals according to his health, as opposed to every 90 seconds[/b] [b]4) Burns buff the affected element by 300%[/b] Everyone always talks about how easy nightfalls are with burns on. This is because burns make it very easy to clear out ads, and allow you to kill the boss three times quicker than usual. It becomes about DPS instead of about surviving. Take away the burns, add lightswitch or grounded or angry and things become much more difficult. PoE is no different. With burns on, people were able to just walk in, kill the servitor, and burn him to the ground without working through a single mechanic. This is the way most fireteams completed the encounter, and this is [b]far easier[/b] than playing out the mechanics bit by bit. With burns off, this will be impossible now. Fireteams will be forced to play out the mechanics as it was designed. I'd be willing to bet that a lot less players will actually be able to complete it this way. Now you may be thinking, "but they're nerfing his health, so it'll be just as easy to burn him to the ground!" Remember, burns buff the element by 300%. This means that they would have to take his health down to 1/3 of what it was (66% less) in order to completely compensate for lack of burn. [b]They will not nerf him that much![/b] That's insane. I'm guessing they'll nerf him about 30% like they did for Valus. He will still take a ton of firepower to bring down. Even if you stand there with all black hammers or gallys, it will take far too long to burn him. You will be forced to play out the fight. This is a true test of skill, adaptation, and survival. Not, "who can stun lock him the longest." As far as making the ads predictably spawn, I have mixed feeling about this. On one hand, I loved having the ads being a [i]constant maintenance[/i], but you still couldn't ever get rid of all them. They were just something you had to deal with, and I think having them spawn predictably will make it significantly easier for those playing out the fight (which I don't like). On the other hand, they spawn at predictable [b]health intervals[/b]. Meaning, if you do attempt to burn him to the ground, you'll inadvertently spawn an obscene amount of ads, making the fight much much harder for you. Make no mistake, this will be harder for most people, because most people didn't actually play out the fight, and now they'll have to. The new modifiers like lightswitch and angry and grounded will be much more difficult to deal with than a burn. Overall, they really just balanced the fight by taking away the unreasonableness that arc burn provided, while simultaneously forcing players to play the way it was designed. [b]TL;DR[/b] 1) The lack of burns make it impossible to burn him to the ground. You'll have to play the mechanics 2) They will [b]not[/b] nerf him by 66%. That's insane. You won't be able to burn him to the ground with gally. I'm guessing a 30% nerf. 3) New modifiers like lightswitch, grounded, or angry will add a new a much more difficult challenge than a burn did. [b]EDIT: I'm just going to take out my opinion about how long the fight should take. The discussion is becoming too much about that, and not so much about the actual content.     • Is it different than it was last night after the patch? I didn't find it that bad, but maybe the reset changed it. It was small arms and trickle, sure, we had to defuse mines before he was dead, and the essence was a pain in the butt, but we all had done it on arc and void burn weeks with LFG groups (we were an LFG group... It's all I've got). Off the jump, run left, kill servitor, WoL bubble, and break the bonds. Then just clear adds before you tool up Skolas. Adds spawn according to his health, so you can manage the adds and rotate easier. Just be mindful of the 50% and 25% health points. That's when mines spawn. You can manage that too. Just stay alive, COMMUNICATE, and hand off the essence at 5-10 seconds left. Not easy, but FAR from impossible. TL,DR: Focus. Manage the fight. Punch and pie.

        Just wanted to formally congratulate you on accurately predicting the NERF not being an actual NERF. Lots of posts today on how skolas is now more difficult. Well done :)

          • Honestly, we can't know if it's going to be a buff or a nerf until it actually comes out. We don't know how drastic the health nerf will be, we don't know what modifiers will be active, we don't know how easy or difficult add clearing will be, or at what intervals they'll spawn. Hell, with something like the specialist modifier it might be just as easy to quick burn him. Don't get me wrong, I think you're probably right. It's likely going to make the fight longer/harder for some people, but we really can't know until it happens. I wouldn't put it past them to completely nerf his health down to scale from the burn modifier, regardless of how drastic it sounds. I imagine we'll find out soon enough, I look forward to swatting him with you all next week.

            • I'm could careless they did this since I got all ecotic bounties and poe gear I don't have to run it anymore. That ought to be alot of fun taking on the insane fallen captains (with no burn) while skolas is after you. No thanks im out

                • When it was void burn, my fireteam burned him pretty quick with Gjallarhorns and BH. And the tainted light isn't even hard to deal with. It's gonna be easier.

                  • WoL bubble and snipers will be the new goto. Which imo kill skolas faster than ghally. So now if you dont have a 365 sniper with high impact youll probably wont get a team.

                      • Well after i got the grimoire card for skolas this week i would probably not doing this again the cipher can drop from 34 also and elemental weapons i dont need and if i will visit the lighthouse where an elemental weapon is guaranteed Instead of a marginal chance to Get a non rerollable weapon anyway

                        • Finally someone gets it. I've seen way to many idiots posting about their precious skolas difficulty. Crying about how bungie is removing the only truly difficult activity in the game. If you did a no burn method before (I doubt anyone did more than once), it doesn't seem like the encounter will change all that much. If you burned him to the ground while ignoring ads, you better break out your sweatband and try-hard pants. The fight was broken, plain and simple. I'm actually surprised people thought bungie wouldn't fix it. In fact, a majority of the content creators that visited bungie the week before launch all had the same thing to say about skolas at launch. "Get your runs in now, the encounter was definitely not supposed to play out this way."

                          • Ya if anything it was buffed. Now we cant 40 seconds nuke him with snipers/gallys. They made it harder but it is a good thing they did. People forgot about his mechanics (mines, debuff) and just focused on killing him fast. That is not what was intended.

                            Why are so many of my fellow guardians obsessed with "playing it as it's supposed to be played" or "legit," what's the difference? Two weeks ago everyone was taking about the legit Qodron and the cheese way, but all I saw was the fast Gjallarhorn and the slow Gjallarhorn way. Gjallarhorn is my best rocket launcher, and I have great primary's and secondary's that leave my heavy spot free to use an exotic, so why not use it? I did Qodron 3 times two weeks ago and 3 times last week, some we're the "cheese" way and some were the "legit" way, but each time I was using Gjallarhorn. So what's the big deal? If someone wants to do it fast, which often isn't fast because it can require a lot of wipes and restarts, or if they want to play through all the game mechanics, who cares? How other people play doesn't change anything for me, so again, what's the big deal?

                            • What's the point of weapon and armor cores anymore? By this point you've had the chance to get all armor pieces for every character. The weapons aren't even good either. Doesn't matter what they do to PoE anymore.

                              • I'm very excited for the fight next week I'm hoping it balances perfect I myself am a boss killer I'm the guy who stun locks skola iv been jumping into others games and basically stun locking and arranging people who have been stuck on him for hours to get through it super quick, iv made a killing at opening 35 chests cause I can jump into a game and end it pretty quick. So you think I should hate the changes but no I'm excited because I'm only helping others out cause I'm bored and ran through all 3 levels of Poe on all 3 characters in first couple of days after reset.

                                • Well fpr the void burn one, me and a group of friends took about 15 to 20 mins after a strategy was set. They may have used a void weapon I cant remeber but I know fpr a fact my revenge was doing jack shit damage. We used our normal strat and fought it out

                                  Was anyone really fooled into thinking he would be just as easy to beat? Nobody I knew was. We all raced to kill him this week because we know next week will suck. Bungie is doing what they always do. They want us to play the game their way and they chose to spin it to make it seem like they have our best interest in mind. What they NEED to do is increase the chances of getting elemental primaries. Otherwise, there's not much point in killing Skolas. Just my two cents.
