There are thousands of child soldiers in third world countries younger than 13 and are lethal with guns. The child in this story could have had some form of training. In addition, this person has survived for 5 years in a desolate world where death could be around every corner, a period of five years is easily enough time to become adept with a gun.

It is not a matter of seeing or not seeing a problem but rather necessity. Does the fact he is 13 year old add/furthers the story? I am all for being original and inventing something with/in my own work, but sometimes I find a need to step back and ask myself, if what I am doing just a gimmick or is it actually adding to the story... Everyone “loves” Tolkien for wasting a chapter describing grass… and not the one they were smoking :)
