I know that they use 3D Studio Max, but that is just for the animation. What kind of CAD and Architectural Programs to they use to make maps and weapons? And what kind of sound recording system does Marty use to make in game music? I just want to learn more about what goes into the game creation process in terms of software and such, so I thought I'd turn here.
Posted by: Nuklearrabbit Visual Studio (VC++, VC#, etc.) 3D Studio Max Adobe Photoshop Maya ... are what many game developers use. And definitely NOTHING to do with VB6 or VB.NET. So, don't waste your time trying to learn it (to those who may read this post)
Programming models (ALL models, as far as I know) All textures Animation Respectively As well as their own set of tools for making halo content, Tool, Guerrilla, and Sapien, though I don't know how much those have changed since halo ce.

A C++ compiler, at the very base of creating Halo 3.

A special version of Forge, called Devkits.

Microsoft Paint. Obviously!!

most likely they use custom programs to protect their games source code from wannabe hackers and they probably use 3d studio max for some animations(might use another custom program) but not only do you need programs they must have hundreds maybe even thousands of pages of custom scripts and then lets not forget to mention what Microsoft game studios might have given them. hope this helps me and some friends are making a game so i know some knowledge if you want more info just send my gamer tag a message it's the same as my name ~ zerosparten~owner of the hopefully up and coming shadow eclipse studios~
Posted by: Zatherath From my own experience, I would say they use 3ds Max for both some animation and to model weapons, characters, maps, and so on. Maya is used for a more refined animation but can also be used to make models, special effects, and everything 3ds Max can just a little more powerful. Aside from those they use ZBrush and Mudbox for some more modeling and such. They use stuff like Photoshop for textures, Illustrator to make the medals, and so on. As for programming, it is probably a mix of C, C#, C++, Java, .NET (XNA), and so on depending on what the task is since some programming languages are better than others at certain things. Audio, I don’t know since I am not much of an audiophile, but I would imagine something at least like Audition. Aside from their own custom made programs, the core stuff can be purchased by anyone with the money. The modeling programs and such are simply off-the-shelf products, albeit with some custom made extensions probably. They don’t use their own software so people can’t open it, you can’t open it because what is written on the disc is a compiled version of the game, which is just a bunch of 1’s and 0’s, not the actual scene files you can open in a 3d program or the actual source code to open the code up in an editor. All of their computers are off-the-shelf boxes with maybe some more memory added to them or an upgraded graphics card to make the production run smoother. What really sets them apart in terms of what they have that you don’t have is the Xbox 360 SDK.
REALLY? I thought they used Microsoft Paint.
