I understand the logic behind not having checkpoints in Prison of Elders, but I'm not sure it is working out all that well. The 34 & 35 PoE can take enormous amounts of time, and not being able to finish due to real life time constraints, or worse, getting kicked to orbit with an error message, makes it hard to want to go back in and start from the beginning.
I understand that Bungie doesn't want folks passing a Skolas checkpoint to their friends or to alternate characters; if that was possible, then most people would skip the bulk of the activity (like a lot of people do with raids) and just fight the boss. But why not have a system in place that's similar to the Trials of Osiris scorecard? That would allow a player to save his progress along the way. If the player had to quit, when he returned to his checkpoint he could only do it with someone else with the same checkpoint; ideally, he gets back together with the same two players, but it wouldn't be a requirement. Members of large clans wouldn't have trouble with matchmaking, and I'm sure the LFG sites would adapt also.
I'll admit that I haven't even attempted the 35 PoE yet. I have friends who are getting it done in about 90 minutes, but I have friends who are spending 4-5 in there, too. One guy last night got to Skolas after several hours, only to get kicked to orbit with an error message. Naturally, he was furious, felt like all of that time had been wasted, and said he'll probably never try it again. I can't say I blame him.
I'm all for the challenge of the new end-game content (for three weeks in a row I've gotten absolutely throttled in ToO, but I keep going back), but sometimes life gets in the way and we have to put the controller down. Or, sometimes, network connectivity issues get in the way, causing us to rage quit. Either way, a checkpoint or scorecard system would cut down on the frustration that comes from not finishing the content and having to start at the beginning each time.
