A man, how he earned his "Recon" , and how Bungie impacted his life.

Hello Bungie.net, today I have an interesting story to tell. A story of a man (That man being me), his life, and how Bungie impacted it. Note it is long, perhaps emotional at parts, but it does in the long run, explain how I got Recon and for those who truly care; how Bungie impacted my life. Many inconsiderate people may reply to this topic without thinking such as; "China WANTZ THERE WALLZ BACK!!!" and; "HA UR A HANDI!!!!1" and if you are going to say something like that, go ahead. But know that many will be frowning on you, and you will not be respected for quite some time..by me especially. Read and listen from the heart, as this is a very serious topic about my life that I have decided to finally share with you; the community. Well, I know you just LOOOVE listening to my colorful language, so I'll talk your kind of talk for the rest...well I'll try anyhow but this might get a little touchy feely at some parts; take heed. The following is a Story of how Bungie made me realize that, I was a person really. My whole life, I thought I was an outcast. Thrown aside to be laughed at because of my "Birth Defect". In case you already hadn't guessed, I was born with a severe Birth Defect; My right hand. It resembles only about 1/4 of an normal person's hand. I know this is hard to visualize; so I've included pictures near the end of the "story" for you. If you have any bad comments to make about how my hand looks, keep them to yourself. I've heard all the insults already. Now continuing on with the story. When I was young, nobody would play with me. They would just look at me and walk away. My mental health was put into jeopardy during my first years of school, and I had to go to a therapist every week to talk about my problems. I had one friend though, I used to go over to his house practically every day and play video games. (To be specific; "Spyro the Dragon" for the PS1.) At first, I told him I couldn't play because of my hand, but he told me to try and eventually with a unique positioning of the controller I figured out how to play. That's what got me hooked on gaming. Then, around 7th grade in Middle School; people at school where not as filled with hatred, and were more accepting; well at least a few people where like this...this was the beginning of my "Band'o-Friends" . Another friend of mine early in the year 2007 suggested I buy an Xbox 360 with this game I had never heard of called "Halo 3". I took his advice since playing Wii games was almost impossible for me, and I was bored of my Playstation 2. On Christmas day of the year 2007 (Well technically it was the 3rd night of Chanakah, but I'm trying to simplify it for you...lol) I opened up Halo 3 for the first time and with a bit of trouble setting up the 360 I finally got to play the game that would soon inspire me, more than I knew at the time. Much more than I knew. I used to play Couch Co-Op with my brother; Kooper13 all the time before we got live. But that same annoying friend that bugged me to get a 360 finally bugged me enough to get Xbox Live. I was utterly thrilled by the online experience brought by Halo 3, as it was my first real "Online" game. Playing with 1.4 hands was hard, especially online and I was often trash talked for "being a noob" but I tried not to care. Eventually, I became quite active on the Bungie forums and you know what? I was shocked by how much they where involved with their community. In terms of my life, I felt depressed a lot of the time. Often times I didn't really know where my life was headed. "Hopeless" would be a good word to describe how I was back then. Since I had grown into Bungie and actually honestly taken a serious liking to them, I sent one of them (Name Disclosed) "my story" much like this but more of a brief summary and not as detailed as this post because I wanted to hear their thoughts about it. I really had no intention of getting Recon when I sent the message, and I wasn't even sure if they would receive it. But when I returned home from school that day I checked Bungie.net to see that (Name Disclosed) had responded! They told me to check my armor to see if I found anything shiny, and sure enough; Recon. I was psyched that Bungie awarded it to me and it sparked hope, determination and thats when I knew; I wasn't hopeless. If I truly tried, I could accomplish anything. Because Bungie inspired me so much; enough so to make me decide I wanted to get into the gaming industry, I thought I would post my story as a gift to them, and also to the community. Thank you for understanding, reading and sharing this experience with me. I'll see everyone around the Forums, and hopefully see YOU guys at Bungie in a job interview in about 7 years! Thanks again, and peace out. ~Zero Pictures: I give Bungie 1.5 Thumbs Up! How I hold the Controller

 • Thanks again guys. I feel so gratuitous right now! ^__^ I guess I'll use this post to answer a few reoccurring questions as well.
Posted by: AssassinOfJoy Mid way through the 4th paragraph you say you were born with a birth defect on your right hand, but judging from the pictures it's your left hand (please correct me if I'm wrong).
The camera I was using was really crappy and it always flips stuff like that. I haven't found the time to get a better one.
What field are you pursuing?
Right now I'm aiming for 3D art and game design. I'll most likely become an Environments artist since I think creating worlds that players can immerse themselves in is just simply amazing.

 • :). This is what it allabout in the end. This is what Bungie should be most proud of. Not of the fame or riches, but at the life stories that they have changed. Things like inspire me to go do something good. -Belo<3d P.S. I read a bit about your story in Facility B5D. I had a feeling it wasn't going to be your last time sharing it.

 • Congrats, man. Your story really impressed me. I know a number of people who have been given a rather rough deal with one thing or another in life, and they spend most of their time being oversensitive about it, and feeling sorry for themselves. It's nice to see someone who has the strength of will to overcome a potential hardship. What would become debilitating for many becomes merely a minor obstacle for others. Kudos.

 • Truly inspirational. I don't know what to say other than that your attitude concerning your hand is just so inspirational. ...Hm...I want to say something meaningful, but I just can't put it into words. Nonetheless, congrats to you, you deserve much more than recon armor.

 • I'm glad you decided to post this here as opposed to the H3 forum. The people there would probably be real d****es Anyways, good story. I know of a guy at my school who only has 1/4 of an arm who plays halo. Good story, enjoy recon, etc.

 • An inspiring story, to say the least. I'm glad that you were able to play Halo 3, despite a slight defect, and it is great to know that you were resourceful in finding a way to grip the controller. As for being treated as an outcast, it happens to everyone at some point in life, in any number of ways, spanning any length of time. Sometimes people become accepting of differences, but sometimes their ignorance blinds them to logical and ethical principles. It is delightful to know that people were able to overcome said ignorance, accept your handicap, (With the exception of the idiots, which everyone encounters in life) and move on. More so the fact that you were able to make a few friends on the way. I commend you for being able to overcome your depression and am pleased to know that the aforementioned Bungie worker who shall not be named was inspired/moved by your story and awarded you the armour permutation. You deserve to enjoy it. As I mentioned before, it is a very inspiring story, which in some way goes to show that good things can happen to deserving people. Enjoy Halo 3, and ignore the idiots in life. They won't be going anywhere, but you will. You have the potential to go places. Put that potential to good use and you may find yourself positioned for an interview at some undisclosed but important employment. Good luck.

 •
Posted by: Lord Snakie I think everybody is an outcast at one point or another, and if you're not you're just missing too much. I choose to be an outcast from many people at my school and around me, simply because I don't like the way the world is going; they act too arrogant for my tastes. And too many other emotions that I won't speak of. Regardless, your story is inspiring, and I know how hard it can be sometimes from experience. I wish the best for you and on you.
snakie speaks the tru7h. outcasts usually end up being the most kick-ass people.

 • Wow, it is really amazing what Bungie does for their fans. After Slayer's house burned down, I was just put in awe and my faith in Bungie as a group of awesome guys restored after they sent him a bunch of stuff and that letter. And now this? Bungie really is the best.
