A man, how he earned his "Recon" , and how Bungie impacted his life.

Hello Bungie.net, today I have an interesting story to tell. A story of a man (That man being me), his life, and how Bungie impacted it. Note it is long, perhaps emotional at parts, but it does in the long run, explain how I got Recon and for those who truly care; how Bungie impacted my life. Many inconsiderate people may reply to this topic without thinking such as; "China WANTZ THERE WALLZ BACK!!!" and; "HA UR A HANDI!!!!1" and if you are going to say something like that, go ahead. But know that many will be frowning on you, and you will not be respected for quite some time..by me especially. Read and listen from the heart, as this is a very serious topic about my life that I have decided to finally share with you; the community. Well, I know you just LOOOVE listening to my colorful language, so I'll talk your kind of talk for the rest...well I'll try anyhow but this might get a little touchy feely at some parts; take heed. The following is a Story of how Bungie made me realize that, I was a person really. My whole life, I thought I was an outcast. Thrown aside to be laughed at because of my "Birth Defect". In case you already hadn't guessed, I was born with a severe Birth Defect; My right hand. It resembles only about 1/4 of an normal person's hand. I know this is hard to visualize; so I've included pictures near the end of the "story" for you. If you have any bad comments to make about how my hand looks, keep them to yourself. I've heard all the insults already. Now continuing on with the story. When I was young, nobody would play with me. They would just look at me and walk away. My mental health was put into jeopardy during my first years of school, and I had to go to a therapist every week to talk about my problems. I had one friend though, I used to go over to his house practically every day and play video games. (To be specific; "Spyro the Dragon" for the PS1.) At first, I told him I couldn't play because of my hand, but he told me to try and eventually with a unique positioning of the controller I figured out how to play. That's what got me hooked on gaming. Then, around 7th grade in Middle School; people at school where not as filled with hatred, and were more accepting; well at least a few people where like this...this was the beginning of my "Band'o-Friends" . Another friend of mine early in the year 2007 suggested I buy an Xbox 360 with this game I had never heard of called "Halo 3". I took his advice since playing Wii games was almost impossible for me, and I was bored of my Playstation 2. On Christmas day of the year 2007 (Well technically it was the 3rd night of Chanakah, but I'm trying to simplify it for you...lol) I opened up Halo 3 for the first time and with a bit of trouble setting up the 360 I finally got to play the game that would soon inspire me, more than I knew at the time. Much more than I knew. I used to play Couch Co-Op with my brother; Kooper13 all the time before we got live. But that same annoying friend that bugged me to get a 360 finally bugged me enough to get Xbox Live. I was utterly thrilled by the online experience brought by Halo 3, as it was my first real "Online" game. Playing with 1.4 hands was hard, especially online and I was often trash talked for "being a noob" but I tried not to care. Eventually, I became quite active on the Bungie forums and you know what? I was shocked by how much they where involved with their community. In terms of my life, I felt depressed a lot of the time. Often times I didn't really know where my life was headed. "Hopeless" would be a good word to describe how I was back then. Since I had grown into Bungie and actually honestly taken a serious liking to them, I sent one of them (Name Disclosed) "my story" much like this but more of a brief summary and not as detailed as this post because I wanted to hear their thoughts about it. I really had no intention of getting Recon when I sent the message, and I wasn't even sure if they would receive it. But when I returned home from school that day I checked Bungie.net to see that (Name Disclosed) had responded! They told me to check my armor to see if I found anything shiny, and sure enough; Recon. I was psyched that Bungie awarded it to me and it sparked hope, determination and thats when I knew; I wasn't hopeless. If I truly tried, I could accomplish anything. Because Bungie inspired me so much; enough so to make me decide I wanted to get into the gaming industry, I thought I would post my story as a gift to them, and also to the community. Thank you for understanding, reading and sharing this experience with me. I'll see everyone around the Forums, and hopefully see YOU guys at Bungie in a job interview in about 7 years! Thanks again, and peace out. ~Zero Pictures: I give Bungie 1.5 Thumbs Up! How I hold the Controller

 • Great job, Halo is about Heroism, and I believe you qualify. You would make Arthur, Lancelot, Perceval and the Chief proud(and Goku, lol). And to Bungie, you guys totally deserve world domination, just kidding; still, I can see why Master Chief comes off as such a great hero, whith you guys to write his story. This is why America is great(onof the reasons).

 • *tear* In all honesty I would never be able to play like that. Some words from my man Jim Valvano. "Don't give up, don't ever give up. I'd have to say you have done that pretty well.

 • Pity implies tender or sometimes slightly contemptuous sorrow or empathy for a person or people in misery, pain, or distress. In regard to humans, a protective or quasi-paternal feeling of pity may be felt towards marginalized or impoverished people such as homeless families; orphans; people with disabilities or terminal illness, and victims of -blam!- and torture. People who have previously experience the pain or misfortune in question may feel pity more keenly. Because pity will often result in the pitier aiding the pitied, some people equate pity with sympathy and assume, therefore, that pity is naturally a positive thing. However, the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche believed that pity causes an otherwise normal person to feel his or her own suffering in an inappropriately intense, alienated way. "Pity makes suffering contagious," he says in The Antichrist, meaning that it is important for the pitier not to allow him/herself to feel superior to the pitied, lest such a power imbalance result in the pitied retaliating against the help being offered.

 • Wow, well done for persevering all this time when you could've just gave up. You are such a brilliant person, for keeping on trying with your hand like that, i have my most upward respect for you. Bungie did the right thing in rewarding you recon, from years of perserverence and have to accommodate a different way of holding the control you just kept going on and achieved well. I also saw you said seeing them in a Job Interview in about seven years, good luck with that when it and hope they take you on board to their wonderful, caring team.

 •
Posted by: permit2kill The most emotional part of this story for me, was realizing that I have more games played than a guy who admits to being depressed and playing Halo as a form of escapism. Excuse me while I kill myself.
The reason why this community always disrespects generals (coming from another general). Look, karma is a -blam!-. No one ever thinks its karma, but when something bad happens to you permit2kill, you better not let any of us get ahold of it, or you will be made fun of, regardless of what it is. I promise you that. Attack the OP again, and mad respect you will have lost. I already posted here, and in the group topics, but check it dude, in the words of Joe Dirt : Keep on keepin' on!

 •
Posted by: CAVX I know I'm probably going to get slaughtered for this, but I really don't see why this lives on. I'm glad that your story is going so well, KWD, and I completely sympathize with your disability. That being said, this initially had a lock and I felt like it should have stayed. It's great that Bungie was nice to you but this just seems like showboating/blogging to me. I wasn't going to say anything at all but I lost some respect when I saw how you were posting in two other threads... I know someone will call me heartless for saying that, but in that case they wouldn't understand what I'm getting at. I fully understand and sympathize with your condition, OP, I just don't like that you posted it in this forum and it continues to live when I just kind of see it as a blog for attention. Anyway, since I don't have the authority to decide what stays unlocked, I won't say another word.
Your probably right CAVX. This was a bit of a Blog type post, and I was unaware that was against forum policies until recently. I'm not going to attack you, because what your saying makes sense from a certain perspective. I tend to be hyper-critical towards other topics sometimes though, so feel free to blame me for that too. I respect that you voiced a separate opinion, and I see where your coming from. Thanks for the comment.

 • Sympathy is a wonderful topic when spreading understanding of a hardship. There is no deep-insight here. It's just sympathy.

You've got to be one of the most insensitive little kids I've ever met on the internet. If you haven't got anything good to say, then it's pointless to say it. I've heard this insult and similar ones like it already about 500 times. Get a life.
Ignore him.He only represents a small portion of what this community is all about. Win thread is win.

 •
Posted by: The SAT ESsAy What configuration do u play on because I would think there would be a way to maximize ur use of that good hand and allow you to excel in halo. Congratulations I always like to hear a good story.
I use the default setting, but I position my left hand differently then most people. If you look at the picture I included, you can see that my middle finger stretches across to reach the trigger. And for A,X,B, and Y I just move my right hand around a bunch.

You've got my respect man. O and I'll see you at Bungie in 7 years, I'm looking forward to it. I also plan to get into the gaming industry.

 • Good to see that there are strong people out there like yourself, KWD. You didn't give up and live a dark, depressing life. Instead, you found a way to turn that around. I could see you inspiring many other people in the near future. That's good in my book. -n0va [Edited on 12.11.2008 8:24 PM PST]
