A man, how he earned his "Recon" , and how Bungie impacted his life.

Hello Bungie.net, today I have an interesting story to tell. A story of a man (That man being me), his life, and how Bungie impacted it. Note it is long, perhaps emotional at parts, but it does in the long run, explain how I got Recon and for those who truly care; how Bungie impacted my life. Many inconsiderate people may reply to this topic without thinking such as; "China WANTZ THERE WALLZ BACK!!!" and; "HA UR A HANDI!!!!1" and if you are going to say something like that, go ahead. But know that many will be frowning on you, and you will not be respected for quite some time..by me especially. Read and listen from the heart, as this is a very serious topic about my life that I have decided to finally share with you; the community. Well, I know you just LOOOVE listening to my colorful language, so I'll talk your kind of talk for the rest...well I'll try anyhow but this might get a little touchy feely at some parts; take heed. The following is a Story of how Bungie made me realize that, I was a person really. My whole life, I thought I was an outcast. Thrown aside to be laughed at because of my "Birth Defect". In case you already hadn't guessed, I was born with a severe Birth Defect; My right hand. It resembles only about 1/4 of an normal person's hand. I know this is hard to visualize; so I've included pictures near the end of the "story" for you. If you have any bad comments to make about how my hand looks, keep them to yourself. I've heard all the insults already. Now continuing on with the story. When I was young, nobody would play with me. They would just look at me and walk away. My mental health was put into jeopardy during my first years of school, and I had to go to a therapist every week to talk about my problems. I had one friend though, I used to go over to his house practically every day and play video games. (To be specific; "Spyro the Dragon" for the PS1.) At first, I told him I couldn't play because of my hand, but he told me to try and eventually with a unique positioning of the controller I figured out how to play. That's what got me hooked on gaming. Then, around 7th grade in Middle School; people at school where not as filled with hatred, and were more accepting; well at least a few people where like this...this was the beginning of my "Band'o-Friends" . Another friend of mine early in the year 2007 suggested I buy an Xbox 360 with this game I had never heard of called "Halo 3". I took his advice since playing Wii games was almost impossible for me, and I was bored of my Playstation 2. On Christmas day of the year 2007 (Well technically it was the 3rd night of Chanakah, but I'm trying to simplify it for you...lol) I opened up Halo 3 for the first time and with a bit of trouble setting up the 360 I finally got to play the game that would soon inspire me, more than I knew at the time. Much more than I knew. I used to play Couch Co-Op with my brother; Kooper13 all the time before we got live. But that same annoying friend that bugged me to get a 360 finally bugged me enough to get Xbox Live. I was utterly thrilled by the online experience brought by Halo 3, as it was my first real "Online" game. Playing with 1.4 hands was hard, especially online and I was often trash talked for "being a noob" but I tried not to care. Eventually, I became quite active on the Bungie forums and you know what? I was shocked by how much they where involved with their community. In terms of my life, I felt depressed a lot of the time. Often times I didn't really know where my life was headed. "Hopeless" would be a good word to describe how I was back then. Since I had grown into Bungie and actually honestly taken a serious liking to them, I sent one of them (Name Disclosed) "my story" much like this but more of a brief summary and not as detailed as this post because I wanted to hear their thoughts about it. I really had no intention of getting Recon when I sent the message, and I wasn't even sure if they would receive it. But when I returned home from school that day I checked Bungie.net to see that (Name Disclosed) had responded! They told me to check my armor to see if I found anything shiny, and sure enough; Recon. I was psyched that Bungie awarded it to me and it sparked hope, determination and thats when I knew; I wasn't hopeless. If I truly tried, I could accomplish anything. Because Bungie inspired me so much; enough so to make me decide I wanted to get into the gaming industry, I thought I would post my story as a gift to them, and also to the community. Thank you for understanding, reading and sharing this experience with me. I'll see everyone around the Forums, and hopefully see YOU guys at Bungie in a job interview in about 7 years! Thanks again, and peace out. ~Zero Pictures: I give Bungie 1.5 Thumbs Up! How I hold the Controller

 • Awesome! If I could give recon, and you didn't have it, you would be the first person I gave it to including myself ( ;D ) anyways, I like that you are feeling more like a person. Just ignore the jerks in the world, cuz there are a lot of them ^.^ [Edited on 12.12.2008 4:37 PM PST]

 • That story really made me look at when I play Xbox and how annoyed I get at a silly thing like a video game, when there are people like you who have to take that kind of thing everyday. You are a stronger person than I. Kudos to you my friend, I wish you the best in life. And remember that if you do feel like no one likes you, just remember that there ARE people who care. God Bless -FB- [Edited on 12.12.2008 4:31 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: Sparlan63 Why was this unlocked? It was locked before. I feel so sorry for people like you and I would treat you like anyother human being. You definatly deserve this Recon, : )
It was orignally locked because it was a Blog post, but I asked Durardo nicely to unlock it, and he did. That's another thing I love, this community (can) be very understanding. : )

 • At the beginning I thought He got Recon for a birth defect...wow....That's either A) A lie or B) someone who thinks Recon would grow their hand back. Now after reading the whole thing I can say different. You hadn't even heard of Halo 3 at first, didn't play Live for a little bit, then didn't join B.Net until a little later. I then saw how you sent them the story with no intention of Recon but got it anyway. I can say that, that story was good. Too well detailed to be a lie. The pics are credible enough. All I can say now is: Have an awesome life man. [Edited on 12.12.2008 12:36 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: Vampbat you got recon for sitting and writing your autobiography which will ahve taken around 30 mins max and people who spend literally 1000's of hours getting 5000+ exp dont?!?!? wtf thats so unfair
fortunately, you don't make the rules, so declaring something to be unfair is completely irrelevant. i hope your heart grows three sizes this year.

 • What I'd like to say has more than likely been mentioned, but you deserve the recognition. You are without a doubt an amazing influence. I'm not sure I would be able to continue to do the things I love now if I had a birth defect. Keep being awesome and never let your disability get you down. • i don't know why i didn't post this earlier but when i was in elementary school there was a kid in my class that was paralyzed from the neck down. he had to control his chair with his chin by moving a little nob that was just below his bottom jaw. nintendo made him a special "controller" that he could blow air into. it was designed specifically for super mario brothers. when he would exhale it would move mario forward and when he would inhale mario would turn around and run the other way. when he would inhale/exhale with more force it would make mario jump (no fireballs, though). i thought that was pretty cool and worth mentioning in this thread.

 • Wow. I really don't know what to say, if I had birth defect like that I don't know how I could handle it. Amazing story. (Also, wouldn't it be possible for a doctor to reconstruct your hand or give you a prosthetic hand?)

 • That is quite inspirational. Congratulations on overcoming your troubles, others should take notice and have hope. If Bungie keep going like this maybe their goal of world domination isn't as far off as we think.

 • The one thing I dislike about this thread is that you have more exterminations than I do, despite the disability. There is no justice :(. Other than that, it's about the most inspiring thing I have ever read. Props to you. And I'm heartened to see that the Bungie forums aren't as full of douches as I thought. It makes being around here almost pleasant.
