You don’t. Forgive my deception, but you don’t nerf it, because as it is, Thorn is in a perfect place right now, as are the other Exotic Hand Cannons, Red Death, and Vex. They kill effectively—more so than regular weapons, and I think that’s what makes an Exotic a supreme weapon: consistency.
Note that before this, Thorn was an awful weapon that people complained about, going through a cycle of nerfs and buffs that didn’t really improve anything. The cycle ended on the buff we have now, and no one really complained about dying by it until after TDB dropped.
Now we find the forums waging war over this weapon. The polls show that the majority of people are COMPLETELY fine with Thorn’s efficacy—if anything, they just don’t like seeing it so often—but the majority of posts visible on boards are titled something along the lines of “THORN OP” or “BUNGIE/DEEJ BAN THORN.”
There’s a problem with nerfing Thorn that I don’t think these posters understand: it creates a CYCLE. Remember Day One SUROS Regime? It was a BEAST. It hit hard, hit fast, and was all over Crucible. Those who had it reaped the benefits, and those who didn’t complained about its strength. Then it was nerfed. TWICE. To make matters worse, Bungie went ahead and nerfed auto rifles, ensuring that only 3 of 4 primary archetypes were usable in Crucible. Most forgot about SUROS, and plenty still don’t know it was ever that godly. The same can be said for Pocket Infinity, but it wasn’t hit with 3 nerfs, just 2 (individual and FR nerf). Up to this day these two weapons, and several others are classified as useless.
SUROS’ situation is not unique. The “Glory Stage” of its "Regime" is where we are now with Thorn. If we keep pushing for nerfs, we’ll add another to the trash pile and move on to the next target (TLW, Vex, or Red Death, most likely). There will always be a weapon people hate and want nerfed, and this cycle will not end until we have a boatload of weapons with massive TTKs because they were nerfed to the ground. Instead of taking forever to get a kill and be killed, I would rather kill fast and die fast, keeping my engagements as fresh and me on my toes—constant cat and mouse is wasting game time IMO. I’m suggesting that instead of nerfing Thorn and others, we should instead buff underpowered weapons to a similar tier, so we can have more choices and counters, and finally be able to get off of Thorn, as a “crutch” and as a topic.
If Thorn must be altered, I suggest removing Perfect Balance, decreasing fire rate, or decreasing the mag to 7, but, in the meantime, this is what I had in mind for buffs:
General:
- Rollback Most Recent Auto Rifle Nerf
- Rollback Fusion Rifle Spread Nerf (Keep Ammo Nerf)
Specific Exotics:
- Buff SUROS Regime (Day One or 1st Nerf efficacy)
- Buff Necrochasm (Small Impact Increase, Base Mag to 55, Guaranteed Thrall Explosion)
- Change Hard Light’s Exotic Perk (Suggestion: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/122782655/0/0/1)
- Buff No Land Beyond (No Swaying, No Glare, Slightly Less Zoom, Mulligan Replaced (Potentially By Hidden Hand), Add Increased Accuracy to The Master Perk, Make Sights Less Obstrcutive)
- Buff MIDA Multi-Tool (Increase Range)
- Buff Universal Remote (Slight Increase to Impact, Increase Range)
- Buff Fourth Horseman (Replace Return to Sender with Hammer Forged, Increase Impact)
- Buff Pocket Infinity (Increase Base Magazine Size to 5, Increase Stability, Decrease Charge Rate)
- Add “Lock-On” Capability to Truth
- Increase Size of Dragon’s Breath’s Solar Grenades, add 3sec Ignite DoT
With these buffs and changes in mind, Guardians will have so many more options in Crucible that will get the job done. Thorn would become less of a threat because it would stop appearing so often, now that people can use the weapons they like to do well, instead of the few well-made ones.
I am anticipating A LOT of people who will read the first two words of the post and write essays on why I’m wrong and why we should only nerf-Nerf-NERF everything. These posts will be ignored.
Besides those unfortunate souls, please, tell me what you think.

I would be fine with this post's stance if Bungie had not already trashed auto rifles. I would say either return auto rifles like the Suros Regime to their pervious game state before the nerf or trash the hand cannons in a similar way. At this point, and I know I'm not alone, hand cannons are negatively impacting my player experience within the PvP realm of Destiny. It seems like everyone is using them. And that is the real problem. Hand cannons like thorn and hawkmoon are being used by over 75% of the PvP population, if I had to guess. Don't even get me started on Trials the passed couple of weeks, and my fireteam has gone 9 and 1 both weeks we have played. Iron banner as well, mother of god... Anyway, that would mean that instead of one person shooting at you with a hand cannon, it is now more like 4 or 5 out of the 6 total opponents. This makes them appear more powerful than they are when opponents are moving against you in force. And now, at this point I have had enough of the current state of this games shenanigans and really don't plan on returning until after a patch does one of the two options stated above previously or something similar.

Bump!!

1 ReplyI agree with with your post.
-
They need to fix the range script, its bugged, and i can tell you to 100% because if you can kill a guy from far away with the last word, there's something wrong
-
6 RepliesThe only gun that needs a nerf is the last word, that gun is broken
-
How about this to nerf thorn, rebuff auto rifles so we don't see only thorn, red death, or vex
-
-
Play big maps scrub. Do combined arms or something. No thorns there
-
-
•Increase magazine size of Vex Mythoclast to 50
-
1 ReplyI actually countered the thorn in this video on my post. If you check it out, you'll clearly see that it's not that OP, it's easily counterable and I show you ten weapons that can do so, I even used NLB. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/128055734/0/0

1 ReplyI think Thorn has its place in PVE and should not be nerfed. PvP Thorn is a completely diffrent story . Thorn in pvp is great IF you have one . If you don't , 80% of the time , it's what just killed you . Either make this bounty easier so everyone can get one , or remove it from pvp. For all the eletists living in mom's basement , keep your comments to yourselves . We don't care how easy the bounty was for you . Keeping it as it is would be the easiest solution , sure . But one day, 90% of the people will all use thorn, because it's so OP. Is that what you want ? I vote to nerf it in pvp only , or remove it altogether .

2 RepliesNo if the Mida multi tool is a multi tool it should have all types of burns
-
I don't have any issue with Thorn hitting hard, at close-medium range it should be a beast, it's just the range of it doesn't die off and the burn damage does the same if you were shot from point blank or across the map. I use my mida multi tool, I like to think I'm quite good with my mida multi tool but I do get frustrated when I'm in a fight over long distance and being beaten by a handcannon. As it is, all exotics need to have distinct advantages and disadvantages from each other. Tbh, most exotic weapons aren't worthy of the name and the ones that are the majority of people in PVP have. Bungie really messed up the balance of the game imo by making exotics easy to get if you put in enough hours. They should have been weapons that when you come across one in the Crucible you'd be thinking 'damn, I wish I had that', not 'there's a Thorn, and another, and another, and there's 2 Hawkmoons'. I'm digressing though. Point is, Bungie have made different classes of weapons but the pros and cons of each class aren't clear

Bump No nerfs just buff auto rifles
-
By not nerfing thorn.
-
My principal issue with Thorn is the fact that two very fast fired headshot can still kill someone. It takes merely 0.36 second with the weapon to guarantee a kill. I at least you had to wait three poison ticks to fire another round and kill the opponent, it would be a lot more balanced and still be a force to be reckoned with.
-
Shouldn't be so much burn and the boutys should be easier to acquire
-
I've been saying for a while now, "don't nerf Thorn, buff other stuff." So, it should be obvious I agree with you. You just said it better than me.
-
1 ReplyYay finally someone with common sense
-
1 ReplyDont decrease ammo.... it will make it useless in pve...
-
No Nerf needed, just Buff other Weapons.

Edited by SkellRino: 6/7/2015 9:13:36 AMAn even better and quite more subtle way:
Selling the game
-
3 RepliesThe vex in day one version was more OP than anyone, 56 critical was too much
-
Edited by Spixtar: 6/7/2015 8:20:28 AMNo the best way is to just not nerf it and bring AR back to where they was before!
