Explain to me what a "try hard" is.

My fireteam and i earlier today DESTROYED a team in the trails and went flawless. Two of them then messaged me and called us a bunch of try hards. I've been hearing that term since black ops 1 and i don't understand it because i believe its a term only scrubs and noobs use. Try hards? Duh ima try my best to make sure i end up winning. Thats the whole point of competitive multiplayer. Can someone please clarify (definition) what a "try hard" is and justify why it's bad to be one. Thanks. Edit: so the most common response i'm getting is a "try-hard" is someone who tries way harder than is needed to win. Or someone who takes gaming to serious. Well It's called "competitive multiplayer", which means it will be competitive which also means people are literally competing to win. I don't see whats wrong with trying your hardest to win and not lose. Even tho you get no prizes. But based off of most of the answers i've received, most of you are basically saying you should never try hard to win, which makes no sense lol. And if you want to win and try your best, its a bad thing. I think real gamers understand there is no such thing as a "try-hard" or trying to hard when it comes to video games, especially when it comes to competitive multiplayer. In a way, competitive multiplayer is like a sport and to an extent it should be taken serious. If you don't then competitive multiplayer just isn't for you. You might as well call michael jordan or muhammad ali a try hard which makes no sense in my opinion. People that really call others try-hards always seem to be little whinny kids that just got their ass whooped but hey thats just my opinion. When it comes to video games there is no such thing as a try-hard. It's basically an expression sore losers use to make the person who won feel less accomplished about their victory. But thanks for all your answers!

    • I make the distinction when I see trials of Osiris load outs/setups in regular crucible. Those are try Hards. It's like an nba player going to the ymca and ruining a game of pickup by dunking on everyone every possession.

Pretty much just someone who tries really hard to succeed at something. It can be good or bad depending on how you look at it but the only people who use it as an insult are people who aren't very good. In my opinion it's a good thing. You could call Michael Jordan a try hard basketball player but look where that got him.

          • Trials* not trails haha Anyways, back in the cod 4 and halo 3 days is when that term really blew up. Seeing someone reach tenth prestige is the definition of a try hard and you can figure the rest out yourself; it's pretty obvious what it means.

I define a "tryhard" as a player that is on the winning team, yet continues to use "mlg" tactics. Or players that truly cares about winning/losing games. If you are an above average player, then most games come pretty easy and dont require you to use a lot of mental reaction/focus/stress. "Tryhards" are constantly using 100% mental focus/reactions and are using tactics/strategies usually reserved for serious games, regardless if they are winning by a substantial amount. These players NEED to win and they will NOT allow themselves to lose. If you are like me then you like to win but dont care if you lose,

              • Most of the time when your adversary calls you a "try hard" that basically indicates that they are mad that they are losing so, they want to make it seem like they weren't playing to their full potential while you were. Don't listen to them, you most likely have more skill then them so they can be mad all they want.

Try hard (1) -- Someone who puts in too much time, effort, and energy for a specific result. It often involves "dedication" to a pointless subject (Destiny's broken PvP) and reliance on specific cliches (Thorn/TLW/Fellwinter's Lie/That spear thing) in order to fit in and be accepted by a clique. Try hard (2) -- The OP who "DESTROYED a team in the trials and went flawless." One cannot get more "try hard" than this statement.

                        • Defining it is impossible (within the gaming community). I say that because it's just a simple insult that isn't used consistently. Friends and strangers use that term when they lose and when they win. It's mostly used in competitive play (it seems more acceptable to be a try hard when playing PVE). I see a "try hard" as a person who is trying to use OP weapons, gear or even glitchy strategies. The do anything to win tactic. Essentially, it's just synonym for scrub. I guess the real question is, does it bother you? I think the childish name calling is appalling, but I am amused when someone actually blurts out that insult. Am I offended? Hell yeah I am! A toxic mentality will not only be contagious, but a buzzkill as well.

In my eyes a tryhard is somebody who basically researches the game to know all the best strategies and tactics and what weapons to use kind of like spawn trapping in cod in demolition or domination. The kind of spawn trap where people are shooting you through walls as you spawn those are the truest form of tryhards. In generall though a try hard is somebody useing top tier gear and classes. Basically if you use an exotic hand cannon, mythoclast, or red death you will be seen as a try hard. I would consider you a try hard if you use rockets but you basically have to use them over mgs now. That being said if you change to a truth or ghorn for the heavy ammo round you are undeniably a try hard so dont deny it. Obviously everybody is going to try hard in trials i have no problems losing i dont hate anybody except 2 hunter one warlock team comps and people who swap exotics for the heavy ammo round because its dishonest. If your gonna use a truth use that shit from the begining to end. I dont really care if you swap primaries or secondaries during the rest of the match i just seriously dont like that you can swap for the heavy round. I should stop this before i go way off topic.
