Explain to me what a "try hard" is.

My fireteam and i earlier today DESTROYED a team in the trails and went flawless. Two of them then messaged me and called us a bunch of try hards. I've been hearing that term since black ops 1 and i don't understand it because i believe its a term only scrubs and noobs use. Try hards? Duh ima try my best to make sure i end up winning. Thats the whole point of competitive multiplayer. Can someone please clarify (definition) what a "try hard" is and justify why it's bad to be one. Thanks. Edit: so the most common response i'm getting is a "try-hard" is someone who tries way harder than is needed to win. Or someone who takes gaming to serious. Well It's called "competitive multiplayer", which means it will be competitive which also means people are literally competing to win. I don't see whats wrong with trying your hardest to win and not lose. Even tho you get no prizes. But based off of most of the answers i've received, most of you are basically saying you should never try hard to win, which makes no sense lol. And if you want to win and try your best, its a bad thing. I think real gamers understand there is no such thing as a "try-hard" or trying to hard when it comes to video games, especially when it comes to competitive multiplayer. In a way, competitive multiplayer is like a sport and to an extent it should be taken serious. If you don't then competitive multiplayer just isn't for you. You might as well call michael jordan or muhammad ali a try hard which makes no sense in my opinion. People that really call others try-hards always seem to be little whinny kids that just got their ass whooped but hey thats just my opinion. When it comes to video games there is no such thing as a try-hard. It's basically an expression sore losers use to make the person who won feel less accomplished about their victory. But thanks for all your answers!

  • (derogatory) A person usually of little talent who tries hard, especially through imitation, to succeed, usually to gain fame or popularity.

  • The younger generation uses this term in a derogatory way because being skilled and competing in something to win is apparently a bad and uncool thing nowadays. Using minimal effort at any task is prized amongst today's youth because of participation medals.

  • Someone that cant play unless they are shirtless & have a towel handy, biggest tryhard ive ever seen in gaming was *Nick mercs* on gears, i thought tryhards had gone the way of the dinosaurs.

    • I thought a try hard was someone that did anything to win, being cheap tactic like camping, noon tube and one man army.

      • When I hear/use it it usually means you try too hard at this because you havr nothing else in life. Ie all you do is play this game cuz you can't get laid... Or something.

      • In the context of trials I would say a tryhard is a player that takes their friends, beats ToO, then decides... "Hey I haven't messed kids up enough as is, let's do ToO again to try and 9-0 again. Then I can do it again on my other characters which will wear the exact same armor as I did and use the exact same weapon I used, with the exact same skills..." and you get the idea. Also one that uses cheap tactics to win. Which 99.9% of the players are doing in trials anyway. Tripmine, one hit kills, thorn, and so on.

      • Try hard is just something bad players use to justify their suckiness, whether it be in real life or the virtual world.

      • my response every time when someone calls me a try-hard is: "why would I try to lose?" I'm here to win, not stand still or run around in a circle for you to kill me so simply.

        • "Try Hard": def Anyone who does better than the person claiming not to be one. See Also:- "Scrub": def Anyone who does better than, worse than, or the same as the person claiming not to be one. Scrubs are often picked out on anything they do different to the aggravator. E.g. "OMG you Scrub, using a Rocket Launcher to kill a whole team in one shot? Use a pistol like we were."

From what I have learned, a try hard is anyone who beats someone else in anytime of video game with a halfway decent score. *See also under term "Sweating" or "Sweaties". In other words: someone who usually has more skill. I hear this term thrown at me almost every lobby when playing cod( which I admit does have a terrible community) just because I'm good at it. This is what gaming had become. Half of the gamers playing today call the opposition hackers, try hards, or no lifes when they lose. Pretty sad.

          • Try hards to me classify anyone who uses strategies to win that people, including themselves, consider crap ways to win. For example. Halos noob combo. Everyone hated it, but people determined to win no matter the skill, would use this then think an say they were the best. Those are try hards.

          • There's a difference between a tryhard and a sweaty. Tryhard: anyone player whom which has the skill to decimate the enemy team using any of the best setups to succeed regardless of the enemy teams skill. Sweaty: any player that assumes they are good at the game and will try to decimate by any means necessary, but fails to do so even though their controller is now sweaty.

          • Whipping out the gally for a lvl 12 story mission would be tryhard. Whipping out the gally for a lvl 35 raid not so much. There's no such thing as a tryhard when something is on the line though. Except in some imaginations!

Back on call of duty when someone called me a try hard because I ran around and wrecked people my response would be "no I wasn't really trying that hard to win a match against a garbage player" if anything, they were the real try hard because they put more effort into camping, trying to preserve a kd ratio that was trash to begin with. I saw it all the time. The people who camped usually had a 1.00-1.15 kd while I maintained a steady 2.0 just by running around. I figured if I was going to play the game I need to be PLAYING the game. Like seriously, are you really playing the game if you're not pushing forward on the analog stick.

              • To be honest a try hard is just someone who plays to a good extent, it should be taken as a compliment, not an insult, it means they're jealous of your skill most likely.
I've been called a try hard and said thanks
