Explain to me what a "try hard" is.

My fireteam and i earlier today DESTROYED a team in the trails and went flawless. Two of them then messaged me and called us a bunch of try hards. I've been hearing that term since black ops 1 and i don't understand it because i believe its a term only scrubs and noobs use. Try hards? Duh ima try my best to make sure i end up winning. Thats the whole point of competitive multiplayer. Can someone please clarify (definition) what a "try hard" is and justify why it's bad to be one. Thanks. Edit: so the most common response i'm getting is a "try-hard" is someone who tries way harder than is needed to win. Or someone who takes gaming to serious. Well It's called "competitive multiplayer", which means it will be competitive which also means people are literally competing to win. I don't see whats wrong with trying your hardest to win and not lose. Even tho you get no prizes. But based off of most of the answers i've received, most of you are basically saying you should never try hard to win, which makes no sense lol. And if you want to win and try your best, its a bad thing. I think real gamers understand there is no such thing as a "try-hard" or trying to hard when it comes to video games, especially when it comes to competitive multiplayer. In a way, competitive multiplayer is like a sport and to an extent it should be taken serious. If you don't then competitive multiplayer just isn't for you. You might as well call michael jordan or muhammad ali a try hard which makes no sense in my opinion. People that really call others try-hards always seem to be little whinny kids that just got their ass whooped but hey thats just my opinion. When it comes to video games there is no such thing as a try-hard. It's basically an expression sore losers use to make the person who won feel less accomplished about their victory. But thanks for all your answers!

Someone who tries really hard? Pretty self explanatory if you ask me.. No one uses these terms in competitive games, e.g cs

  • You can google tryhard bud.... I just see it as those that talk trash, They seem to need recognition for all their hard work While the real deal guys are normally actually nice folk. As for them it's all fairly effortless XD

  • A try hard in pvp context is somebody who spends way to much time playing that mode thinking it has any value in the real world.

  • If you all had thorns, efrideets and self rez, then yea you were tryharding, if not then you just encountered nubs.

  • Apparently everyone online around 1:30 pm today was try hards cuz we got ass -blam!- for and hour and a half solid. Won our first game and not a damn thing after that. It was an embarrassment.

    • It's a phrase that scrubs use to make an excuse for sucking at the game when they can't say your lag switching or hacking

    • Try hardship in this game means exactly what it says.if you go into trials and see a guy running thorn, felwinters and proximity launcher and absolutely destroying generally the team on the receiving end will blame the person for being a try hard when only the jealous of being defeat by cheap tactics. I have read a comment stating that British people often use this term because they think it's better to be cool....I only live across the pond and I have never ever heard this term used by them, every time I have come across someone using this they were American.

    • I mean trials is the place to try hard so it's strange to complain about it. But if you're the guy playing normal control against regular kids using a thorn and felwinter, then you're a try hard.

    • When they call you tryhards, it's basically idiotic people's way of acknowledging you're better than them (because they'd be dumb not to) but trying to justify that the only reason you are is because you give a lot more of a sh-t than they do, which is a subtle way of trying to imply that if they tried as hard as you they'd be as good if not better, when in reality they were almost definitely trying as hard or harder than you were :)

      • I feel you, I can't play pvp in a game without going "try hard" I play to win so yeah I'm gonna do my best, I'll play hard even when I think I'm playing casually

      • Never fully understood the term either. But all these comments is what I assumed. It's just an excuse for sucking to make ppl feel better about themselves. Which in trials especially, expect to get smacked cuz I'm trying my hardest!

      • I always assumed it was meant to describe someone who tried to "win more". An example I guess for Destiny would be like killing all but one enemy, letting them revive and then killing them all. Or taking any other extravagant path to victory just to show how much better you are when there is a clearly simpler safer and more efficient way to win. Tl; dr playing with your food.

      • 1. Butthurt people use that term since they cant handle someone is better than them. This is how it usually goes. 2. I call people tryhards who use the same tryhard weapons I might use. Thorn/last word with Felwinters/matador/party crasher

      • "Tryhard" is when someone knows you're better than them but still tries to insult you. They try so hard.

      • Try hard for trying hard in the trials of Osiris.. Aren't you supposed to try your hardest in the trails? I'm confused

      • Tryhard: a word people use to describe someone that is better then them, they lack the skill to be a try hard so they try to make a insulting word for someone that beats them.

      • I only think teams are potentially in that category if they spam final round snipers in trials. Its frustrating as all hell to get one shotted in the chest, especially if you were obviously going to kill them. Very difficult to counter when 3 instadeath rounds come at your team to start each round of Trials. Normally I don't consider OP tactics cheap if everyone can use them but I don't have access to efrideets so myself and many others are largely boned.

        • If your a sports fan...think joe montana. Tom brady. Steve largent. Dennis rodman. Bill lambier. Larry bird. Etc... Players who cant match skill, therefore study, train, kick, bite, whatever to be successful. In video games the word has been perverted to be an insult. In sports it has always been a complement. I.e. 'gym rat'. 'Film junkie'. 'Hustle player'. In any case, in my experience, the person trying harder usually wins.

        • If you want an actual definition, it's basically a derogatory term used to describe someone that takes a game too seriously, mainly a PvP game. Someone that cares more about winning than having fun. The term is not often used properly, but that is what it's supposed to mean.

          • (derogatory) A person usually of little talent who tries hard, especially through imitation, to succeed, usually to gain fame or popularity.
