Explain to me what a "try hard" is.

My fireteam and i earlier today DESTROYED a team in the trails and went flawless. Two of them then messaged me and called us a bunch of try hards. I've been hearing that term since black ops 1 and i don't understand it because i believe its a term only scrubs and noobs use. Try hards? Duh ima try my best to make sure i end up winning. Thats the whole point of competitive multiplayer. Can someone please clarify (definition) what a "try hard" is and justify why it's bad to be one. Thanks. Edit: so the most common response i'm getting is a "try-hard" is someone who tries way harder than is needed to win. Or someone who takes gaming to serious. Well It's called "competitive multiplayer", which means it will be competitive which also means people are literally competing to win. I don't see whats wrong with trying your hardest to win and not lose. Even tho you get no prizes. But based off of most of the answers i've received, most of you are basically saying you should never try hard to win, which makes no sense lol. And if you want to win and try your best, its a bad thing. I think real gamers understand there is no such thing as a "try-hard" or trying to hard when it comes to video games, especially when it comes to competitive multiplayer. In a way, competitive multiplayer is like a sport and to an extent it should be taken serious. If you don't then competitive multiplayer just isn't for you. You might as well call michael jordan or muhammad ali a try hard which makes no sense in my opinion. People that really call others try-hards always seem to be little whinny kids that just got their ass whooped but hey thats just my opinion. When it comes to video games there is no such thing as a try-hard. It's basically an expression sore losers use to make the person who won feel less accomplished about their victory. But thanks for all your answers!

  • Akashi from kuroko no basket is what you would call a "try hard". Not playing to have fun, just with no spirit and doing anything to win.

Someone who plays in such a way that they aren't even having fun, the end result is just to be victorious. An example would be hiding on ToO until the timer ends and dashing to the middle to cap the zone for 45 straight rounds.

Try hard : a term used in the UK ( south west )do describe some one that try's hard to win or succeed. This is framed as an insult on the grounds that in the UK it is considered cool/ good/ to be a failure. For context if one tries to do well in their exams at school and succeeds then moves on to have a good job and a nice house, people look down on them and insult them for trying hard at life. "Keener" is also a common phrase used to describe a similar situation.
This is accurate and not a joke. They actually think this way.
• When you do the scrubbiest shit just to win, something that normally doesn't work but because it's so nerdy it does. For example: nerds who sit in spawn on Pantheon and just snipe/revive/hide until they all die are try hards.

              • People who are really good at pvp but egotistical about it. Generally someone who references their k/d is a try hard. Generally a negative term, because of the amount of time and effort involved in developing such a skill level means that one has spent too much time playing video games and is trying too hard.

                • As I would define it, a try hard would be someone who is willing to do almost anything and everything to win, not to be confused with a cheater though, a try hard will evaluate the meta, research what is the most successful or optimal gear, what strategies or techniques are proven most effective, and if necessary, how best to utilize exploits to maximize rewards and victories. To put it blunt, try-hards are people willing to compromise integrity, sportsmanship, and compassion in order to claw their way to the top. Winning is fine. Being a winner is fine. Being skilled and talented is not something anyone takes issue with. Taking winning so seriously that you lose sight of the point of the competition (fun and entertainment) is a problem, and an issue, and it is rampant. Feel free to win, hell, be proud of it, but don't be smug, and don't put others down on your road to conquest.

                • I've always defined it like this: Me: Hey man, are you having fun? You've been playing non stop for almost a whole day. TH: Fun?! WTF do you mean fun?!! You think this shit's a game? Look at my K/D bitch! I got every exotic on launch day and I was the first one to solo PoE 35 with only Khvostov and green armor. Me: Ummmm... Ok... Cause some of us were starting to wonder about your pee jars and that empty pizza box you shit in. Any plans to clean that any time soon? TH: No time... I gotta take a power nap for 10 minutes it's reset day. Pass me an empty jar...

                • A 'Try-Hard' by colloquial definition is anyone who goes out of their way to stack the odds in their favor of victory, not by way of tactic or skill, but by way of unfair play. Examples are: Blink-shotgunners. Sunsinger warlocks with The Ram. Players who use TLW/Thorn/Mythoclast excessively or reliantly. Etc. etc. Basically it's anyone who takes this game too seriously and doesn't know how to accept a fair loss on their end.
