I'm a PvE player, I've yet to even achieve a rank 3 in crucible on any of my characters. I recently powered through the Thorn bounty in one 4 hour crucible sitting and actually ended up having a lot of fun in the process. Now I'm looking to become a better crucible player rather than leave it alone since I completed my bounty. What tips would you Crucible elite out there give me? What game modes are the best to practice in?
Edit #1: I'm getting a ton of great advice, I really appreciate it guys. You're great.
Edit #2: I wanted to thank you guys again and give you an update, I'm now consistently going positive with my K/D, 15+, typically in the lower twenties. I've brought my from a .2 to a .8 on my titan and expect that to keep moving upward. Thanks again guys.

4 RepliesEdited by TeKnoVKNG23: 5/28/2015 5:38:42 PMGo on youtube and find a guy called MynameisByf and watch his crucible guides, some great advice there that helped me go from a 0.30 k/d to over 1.00 in the span of a month or two. The video above really helped me start playing better. Here is a link to his playlist. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWBlk70e-hGJrRXopKTt9z0spCk6o64WZ Learning your playstyle and what weapons benefit it is very key. What weapons are you most accurate with and most comfortable using? I would suggest playing patient at first and not running around the map all crazy. Learn what areas of the map are kill zones where multiple people engage and try to flank those areas for easy kills. Learn to use your radar to anticipate encounters and use whatever tools your class has to its advantage. Overall the Crucible is a learning experience, even your bad games can teach you something. Also once you get comfortable branch out and try multiple game modes. I mainly played a lot of control until I got better and then branched out to try some clash and salvage. I don't play rumble all that much but have found it enjoyable the few times I've gone in and tried it out. The Crucible is really a lot better now that they have added in a lot more maps and a better reward system, plus faster earning of marks and rep.

1 ReplyFirst buy a basketball pump Then stab the needle in your ear Pump your head full of air for 9 months Get HoW and act like a pompous dickhead Or make a hunter grab a shot gun and thorn and prepare for some seriously laggy unbalanced close quarters combat but at least you're elite now.

Edited by C Moth: 5/30/2015 1:56:18 AMBest advice I can give is don't expect kills to be easy or your weapons to act the same way in pvp as they do in pve. You will die. .. a lot. But, Don't give up. There's a learning curve that's easy to overcome.

10 RepliesEdited by EzNATOzE: 5/28/2015 4:41:45 PMSince you are very new to crucible, let's start with just the basic stuff. We'll leave the advanced tip and tricks for later time or for you to discover yourself. 1. Find the sensitivity you are comfortable with, high sensitivity will give you faster maneuver at close range (shotgun range), low sensitivity will give you higher control over your shots at longer range. The trick is to find the right balance. It varies from people to people, so you just have to experiment. 2. Map knowledge. This unfortunately, is one of the most important thing you need to acquire, but it will take time since the map you get will be random and it will takes quite a lot of games to learn it like the back of your head. I recommended starting with control. You need to know every line of sight, control points, high traffic areas, where the special and heavy ammo spawns. You should not rely on the way points for heavy ammo or control points, you have to know them by heart. 3. Know how to read the radar. This I cannot stress enough, if used correctly and combined with map knowledge, you will have a huge advantage over someone otherwise. The radar will have different indication based on distance, vertical level, invisibility/couch. I recommended looking up videos on it or experiment for yourself, as it is too long to explain every indicator on your radar. 4. Movement. This is not call of duty, Destiny pvp rewards those who take their time and approach firefights strategically rather than rushing and looking for enemy to kill. Unless you really need to get some where fast or no enemy around on your radar, don't sprint everywhere you need to go. When sprinting you will have slower turn speed, and weapon will not ready right away after sprinting. If you know you are approaching a high traffic area or places with line of sights, stop sprinting and make sure you weapon is ready to fire the moment you spot your target. This is similar to the popular call of duty saying that you shouldn't run through corners. 5. Use the appropriate weapon. This is not telling you to use thorn, red death, vex mythoclast. People have different feel for different weapon, what you use is up to you. What I meant by appropriate is don't run around open area with your shotgun out, or when the radar is telling you there are enemy in proximity, don't hold on to your sniper rifle. The primary weapons in this game serve as versatile weapons that can cover most of your engagement. The special weapons are amazingly good when used according to their own niche, and should be used as a temporary backup when the needs arise. So if you know your next firefight is likely to be close quarter, take out your shotgun or fusion rife. 6. Use your Super tactically. Don't activate it the moment it is up. Supers can be game changers so don't waste it on a single target that you could kill with your weapon. Some examples for when to use your super, denying enemy their heavy ammo, get people off capture point, taking out high threat target (I.e, arc blader, and sun singers in radiance). 7. Heavy ammo. Heavy ammo is another game changer. Your goal is to ensure your team gets heavy ammo and deny enemy of their heavy ammo. For example, if you are near a heavy ammo crate and there are few other teammates near by and no enemy around, wait until your teammate shows up to maximize the amount of heavy ammo on your team. If you have your super ready, you can try deny the enemy their heavy ammo by killing them before they get it or right after they get it. 8. Stick together, but don't get into each others way. Unless you play rumble, it's always advantageous to stick close to your teammates. When I say close, I really mean you are close enough to support your teammates or clean up a kill for your teammates, but not close enough that you obstruct your teammates line of sight or close enough for any enemy to kill you all with a well tossed grenade, super, or heavy ammo. 9. How to manage your engagement. If you are losing a gun fight, don't stand your ground. Run, hide, toss a grenade, set up a mine etc. Get your close range weapon ready if you think the enemy is going to chase after you. However, if an enemy is running from you, DO NOT chase after him. Toss a grenade, or just leave it. 10. Finally, take it easy. Don't get frustrated if you are not doing so well, it is to be expected. You need to approach the cruicible with a positive attitude or you will get frustrated and toss the controller very quickly. I recommend watch some of Mr. Fruits pvp videos, not to watch how he plays but how he reacts when things are not going well for him.

NEVER peek a sniper, unless you are a god at sniping. You can use dancing, sitting, etc. to look around a corner in third person. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT IN TRIALS
-
Don't peak

For beginners control is definitely your best bet as the biggest thing to learn that you can't in PVE is map knowledge and how the spawns generate in relation to the positioning of yourself and your team and easy to learn this in control as you have three points of reference and on almost all maps the major spawns are on A or C side of the map but the spawns are actually controlled by player location and it's zoned off in all game modes so a good place to start and another tip is experiment with different weapons and set ups to work out a play style that works for you as PVE set ups are very rarely as useful for PVP

Since everyone here already gave you lots of good advise, I'll just throw in a little tip that kinda works for me with aiming and shooting: When gripping the controller, place your index fingers on the edge of the triggers so that they are hanging halfway off of them. When you aim and fire, it'll feel more "natural" in a sense. You may find your shots feeling more precise and faster.

Just be patient, unless your playing objective then be savage

4 RepliesI'd recommend watching some of the best PvP streamers on Twitch. You could maybe pick up some tricks they use? WaR Bulletproof and WTFisPoshy They're both really good PvPers :)

7 RepliesI have a guide saved somewhere that I can link you to, just reply to this comment and I'll post the link here when I've found it. My own advice: don't get used to using Thorn, Vex, Last Word etc. find a good legendary or exotic that suits your play style. My personal favourite is the scout rifle on my hunter, as I love scouts and the perk role was too good to pass up. Pick your favourite weapon (not auto rifles) and find one you like. Reroll to get good perks. If using rockets I advise a high velocity, high blast radius proximity detonating launcher (Truth is very good) This allows you to shoot into areas without having to see the enemy for tracking to lock on. Machine guns, if you've got the accuracy, use a low rof high impact version.(I prefer machine guns over rockets except in trials) I'll post other tips if I think of them, ask any questions you've got and I'll be sure to reply

My only advice it to find a play style and own it, if you suck at being aggressive then don't do. Perfect what you're good at, and then if you can find friends to play with that compliment your play style. That's how me and two buddies got to the lighthouse twice.

a lot of good advice here so far. here's a couple: -If you are playing the basic crucible mode, switch out to armor that benefits your skills and weapons. Having an armor piece that gives you extra special ammo saves you time from having to search for that ammo box more often. Faster reloads on weapons and faster melee perks from equipped armor helps out. Level advantages are disabled anyway so you should not be worried about your level unless your aim is to hold the flag staff at the beginning lol. -Change your subclass perks suited for crucible. Not really a whole lot of perks to change but it does help. I tend to max out the agility. -Communicate with friends. -Keep playing! Don't get discouraged then cry over on the forums to nerf something cause it keeps killing you.
-
Just go in to Crucible and have fun at your own pace...Doing it for competition is like throwing a dog treat to a pelican.

Edited by SpartanLeonidus: 5/28/2015 5:41:40 PMI'm no pro but, I'm alright at control. My advice is dont spend too much time in one game mode. I've primarily played control and I'm terrible in ToO. I now need to play rumble and skirmish to sharpen up for the trials.
-
Keep playing. Walk all over the map, explore every part of every map until you know it well. Control the engagements, when you know someone is coming put yourself in the advantageous position, have cover nearby, set yourself at an angle where the enemy won't have cover, and where you will know exactly where they will appear but they won't really know exactly where you are, so you can get the drop on them. If you are alone vs more than one, and you don't have a super, run away.

3 RepliesWell you got your Thorn so your set. Everyone else will be using it also.
-
Best way to succeed in the crucible is to understand the "norms". What people tend to do, how they act, where they go, what lanes they use, things like that. People settle into these wonderful little patterns, even in Trails that are SO fun to exploit.
-
3 Repliesoh you got a thorn, well then your set to be like all the other tryhard phags then just jump in. thorn + crucible = profit seeing as bungie has no clue how to balance ps your light level doesnt mean sh!t

Control is by far the best mode to learn the maps with. The spawning is generally more stable and you can still contribute to your team by playing slower, helping cap flags, etc. Know when heavy ammo spawns and where. Once you have the maps down, and you start getting a feel for the game flow, you can up your aggressiveness a bit. At that point, if you want to up your one-on-one skills, I recommend plunging into Rumble for a few rounds. It's much more intense.
-
3 RepliesFind a gun that you can use in almost any situation, and use your secondary to counter any weaknesses of your primary. On my Vex Mythoclast, I max out the range and stability, and use judgement 6 shotgun for close encounters. Use a rocket with high blast radius and extra ammo. I use the Hezen vengeance because it is perfect for me (I haven't really used machine guns so no advice on them). Save your super for game changing moments/objectives, and try to avoid panic supering/ super soaking one person. Find your strengths and use them against your enemies' weaknesses. Try not to waste an exotic space with an overkill exotic weapon like Gjallarhorn unless it's the only exotic weapon you have. In essence, play with preferred weapons, characters, and game modes. I use old weapons and armor, but they suit me fine in PvP.
-
1 ReplyJust basic: If you're playing with your friends: Communication is the key. Pick a load out that will favour you and your team. Radar is your friend :) For ToO.. Remember when your enemy used their super If you're playing with random: Carry them and win!! Loooool
-
Good sniper shots or shot gun, max out thorn cuz op... and have fun
-
IMO skirmish, rumble, and maybe clash are best for ToO. Control is my most enjoyable PvP and where I spend the most time, but it trains horrible instincts for ToO since staying alive is much more important than scoring points in this
-
I prefer Control and Clash. Not boring and can always fun someone to duke it out with. Plus they are the only two playlists with vehicles. :(

1 ReplyFirst understand that two primaries outshine the others, so you will have the highest probability of success using The Last Word or Thorn Run TLW with aggressive ballistics and perfect balance and thorn with aggressive ballistics and send it. Practice using these weapons. Tap the TLW in all situations while ADS and the tap speed should be proportional to how far your target is away (tap faster when closer). Get used to the Thorn's recoil and make it a headshot machine with send it. Play rumble with both of these weapons. Rumble will teach you how to be aggressive and win one on one matchups. You want a shotgun with shotpackage, max range and high impact: Felwinters, Party Crasher, or Matador are all great choices. Learn how to slide with a shotgun it will help you if you need to be aggressive and are outside of sg range If you want to learn how to snipe and be more passive, play skirmish. Get a sniper with high aim assist and shortgaze, possibly hidden hand, and something that helps you ADS faster (snapshot or injection mold), then either unflinching or an ammo perk like performance bonus. Good new re-rollable sniper choices are low grade humility and Her Benevolence (you can check my hunter, I have pretty much a perfect roll on Her Benevolence imo). The old LDR and Longbow are good snipers as well. For a rocket launcher you want prox det, high velocity, and high blast radius. These are the loadouts that the best PVPers use. You obviously will have to figure out a lot about strategy and positioning on your own but at least having the right weapons can help, but you can learn that through playing the game and watching better players than you play on twitch.
