A brief history on Thorn and The Last Word - 12

TYPE: Perspective: Dredgen Yor DESCRIPTION: Destruction of Palamon Damn. I travelled all the way to this shit hole and Jaren’s not even here. No matter, these people will serve my needs. How these people call this existence “a life” is beyond me. But it doesn’t matter, none of this does. It’s time to send my message…it’s time to come home Jaren. Jaren has spent so much time with this sorry lot, I can practically see a little of him in them all. Jaren is the man responsible for what I have become, and these people, ALL of them, will suffer for it. They will suffer for the hunger in my hand cannon, the emptiness in my soul, and for Jaren’s part in all of it. Well, not all. I need one. I need one to tell Jaren. No good sending a message if no message is sent. Dredgen Yor exited the bar and stood in the center of town. If only Dredgen Yor knew where he stood; the exact same spot that Jaren stood when he first entered Palamon. The people of Palamon started gathering in the streets to see what all the commotion was about. Since Jaren’s encounter with Loken the town had been quiet, devoid of violence. Now violence had returned. At first, people entered the street curious of the new guardian among them. Their approach to Dredgen was different from when Jaren arrived. Jaren was, for most of them, the first guardian they had ever seen. They didn’t know whether to greet him or run in fear. Jaren had ended up as such a god-sent to them all that they couldn’t help but want to welcome this new guardian. But Dredgen Yor was not there to save them. Quite the opposite. Dredgen Yor stood there, silent. How could these people call this a life? I’m practically doin them favor. Dredgen Yor pulled his Thorn and started gunning down anyone he could see. These pitiful creatures would feel the full force of his hatred. His resolve was so absolute, his mercy so absent, and his hatred so sharp it could cut Light. His face was absent of any feeling, but behind his mask his eyes burned with the fire of the hive wizards. With each death the hand cannon in his hand rejoiced, each death offered a spark of Light to devour. But there was no satiation. No amount of Light could satisfy its hunger. People ran, trying to hide in their houses. Houses made of wood. Dredgen Yor threw solar grenades into the houses and watched as they burned. When people ran out to escape the flames they ran head-first into a single bullet. The town was small so it didn’t take long to kill everyone. Everyone, except a young woman. She stood, tears streaming down her face, but unflinching at the approach of Dredgen Yor. She didn’t run like the others. Kelly – Jaren’s not gonna let you get away with this. Dredgen Yor – That so? Fine by me. I ain’t here for them, I’m here for him. You tell him a guardian stopped by to say hello. And with that, Dredgen Yor turned and felt the smoldering ashes of Palamon. TYPE: Perspective: Jaren Ward DESCRIPTION: Destruction of Palamon Jaren could smell the smoke a few miles out. Before that he could feel it. Not the heat of the flames, but the coldness in his heart. He had been out for a little over a day with some of the younger folk of the town, training them to be prepared in case the Fallen came. Shin was with him. Jaren – Tell the boys to pack their things, we are heading back. Shin – Why? We just got out here and we have tons of supplies. Jaren – Don’t argue, just do it. Something wasn’t right. He had to get back, he had to turn them back around. At about two miles out Jaren could see what was wrong. The town of Palamon was almost done burning to the ground. Jaren and the young men began running to the town, but it was too late, when they arrived all they found was ashes and smoke. Brevin, one of the younger boys with Jaren, began crying while he moved from corpse to corpse, trying to find his parents, all while taking in the destruction around him. Shin – Movement! Jaren unsheathed The Last Word so fast there was a slight crack in the air, like a whip had just slapped a horse’s ass. From the smoke emerged Kelly. She too was almost an adult, like Shin, but so slight in size it was hard to think of her as a woman. Jaren – What happened? Who did this? Kelly – It was a guardian! A guardian came into town and killed everyone! Shin – Impossible, you must have been seeing things! Guardians don’t kill innocent people! Kelly – This one did. Said he came to say hello to Jaren. Jaren stood silent for a moment, trying to access the situation. He was there to protect these people, and someone killed them all while looking for him. Jaren – Shin, make sure Kelly is ok and try to search for any wounded. Jaren pulled out his Ghost. Jaren – Contact the City and ask for Cayde-6. Jaren’s Ghost – I can’t get a signal, some sort of communication issue. Jaren – Ideas on what? Jaren’s Ghost – Looks to be Fallen. Jaren - Damnit. They must have detected the smoke and they are coming in to pick over the place. SHIN! Round up any reserves of food you can find, we need to move. Fallen inbound. Jaren’s Ghost – What is the plan? Jaren – We take what we can to the mountain range to the North. We wait out the Fallen and then make way to the City. Hopefully we can re-establish communications on the way and call for help. Jaren’s Ghost – Are you sure? They are only kids. Jaren – Not anymore. TYPE: Ghost Transcript
DESCRIPTION: Re-counting of events after Palamon’s destruction

//TRANSCRIPT FOLLOWS... Jaren Ward and I had been in the frontier with Shin Malphor and two young men, Frank and Brevin, during the destruction of Palamon. After finding only one survivor at the destruction of Palamon, Kelly, we departed heading north as a fire team of five. Physiological analysis on Jaren was difficult. He was obviously concerned with the appearance of this guardian and the death toll they had amassed, but he was also concerned with the well-being of the children travelling with us. Jaren kept telling me to stop referring to them as kids, but it was hard not to, they hadn’t reached the age of 18 yet. Given the situation I recommended to Jaren he divulge to Shin the truth concerning Shin’s abilities but he decided to keep them between the two of us. Had I know what came next I would have pressed harder. The Fallen presence was increasing. They had finished picking over the town in only a few hours, but now they were searching for survivors. They had cut-off our normal departure path toward the City, forcing us north to the mountain range called Dwindler’s Range. During our travel to the mountain range we encountered two homesteads with younger couples from the City. They were known to us, they had both only recently setup homesteads just out of range of Palamon. When they heard of the destruction of Palamon and the death of their parents they chose to leave their homesteads and join us. Facing Fallen by themselves did not seem like the prudent idea. And so, the fire team increased to 9 with the addition of Kressler, Nada, Trenn and Mel. Likely due to their number, they pressed Jaren to assist them with avenging their parents. Jaren had not been keen on the idea, but we both knew we needed intel on this guardian. After much discussion, Jaren agreed. We might have been better off facing the Fallen. //TRANSCRIPT END.
