I have some baptist relatives and they talk about how Catholics are the devil because they pray to Mary but they really just fail to understand what the Catholics are really about

4 RepliesI think that the idea of God being "wrathful," mirrors some of the ideals of the Roman Empire. The Catholics interpretation of the bible comes from a point in society in which there was a societal need for the control of the lower class of people. The lower class prays to Mary, and the other Saints in order to create a kind of hierarchy in which their prayers are "heard" and then relayed to Jesus and God. Those practices eventually led to the Reformation, and then the formation of the Protenstant church and even further to the different denominations we have today. Such as the Baptists. It may not be the most literal interpretation of the bible, but it doesn't go to say that Catholics love God or Jesus any less than other denominations. I have Catholic friends who adore God, and have given themselves to him completely.

76 RepliesI'm a Catholic, and there is an easy explanation for this. We don't pray TO Mary and the Saints directly, however, we ask are asking Mary & the Saint to pray for us! Hope this helped.

61 RepliesCatholics don't actually pray to Mary or the saints. That is a ridiculously huge misconception. Instead, we pray for their intercession. It's like asking them to put a good word in for you or like asking a friend to pray for you. "Praying" to Mary is like saying "Hey Mary, you should help me out and ask your son to answer my petitions." That's it. We don't worship Mary and we don't worship the Saints. We just believe in a total community of believers. That means past, present, and future. Plus, if you get Mary to ask Jesus on your behalf, do you think Jesus is gonna say no to his mom? :p
