Stop enabling Bizarro Bungie, it's time for endgame matchmaking.

Edit/prologue: This started as just a small post supporting matchmaking, it has grown into something more at this point. This is the community taking a stand and asking for in-game access to content we purchased, who don't believe they should have to leave the game to play the game. Opposing views are welcome as are suggestions to making the process of teaming up better/easier. Also please consider before calling people lazy or stupid for not just using LFG sites, that not everyone's life experience fits your own. Be it work, family, financial situation, whatever. There are many Guardians who just are not comfortable with playing with strangers. For them, using in game matchmaking is a huge step but one that they can get through. Going to a separate forum and posting for a group is something they will never be able to do and that doesn't make them bad people or any worse at this game than anyone, it just means they are wired differently than you. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/126184301/0/0 I appreciate all the support for the post and I hope Bungie are still listening ---------------------------OP---------------------------- There's no more guarantee of success through a random group on LFG sites as there would be with in-game matchmaking. By including matchmaking and making it optional, it would have zero impact on the experience of anyone who didn't want to use it. As the game stands now, without friends on that happen to have not run already, the amount of unplayable content without having to leave the game to search for people is just stupid. Raids I initially suggested a matchmaking solution, but after discussing this with a fellow guardian, I believe an in-game lfg would be perfect for raids. I think the approach to take would be like Gears and Perfect Dark ran their multiplayer. An individual could choose to host a raid, search for raids or be randomly placed in a raid. The host would form a lobby and have the ability to select a minimum level requirement, raid difficulty level and number of open spaces for randoms to join (in case they want to save a few spots for friends to join). Those not hosting could again, browse a list of available raid parties or just select to be placed automatically in one (choosing which difficulty to be placed in). There could be modifiers for whether or not in-progress raids are acceptable or not. This is also how Bungie could solve the issue of no private Crucible matches in Destiny, by doing lobbies hosted just like raids. One thing you found in both Perfect Dark and Gears was that when you are in a lobby and going game to game with the same group over and over, even people that don't talk are talking by the third or fourth game. It's such an incredibly social approach and one I've never understood why Bungie never tried in Halo https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/129939506/0/0 Prison of Elders The level 28 is a joke. It's a minimal challenge with 3 randoms whether they're talking or not. Once you've run the level 28, you pretty much know what to do in higher difficulties. -Kill enemies. Disarm mine. Destroy mine. Kill target. Revive dead teammate. I’ve yet to have a group talk in the 28, but I’ve been invited twice to do the 34 after and everyone talked in it. There is no reason to not have matchmaking for the higher difficulties and beyond that, it’s mindboggling that there isn’t a system in place to remain grouped from the 28 if we choose and go right to the next difficulty. Another option could be to open the 34-35 matchmaking when we hit 34. A fellow guardian had the suggestion of matchmaking for the 28 and 32 and in-game LFG for the 34 and 35. Either way, we shouldn't be beholden to leaving the game to run them. Trials of Osiris This one is admittedly the most divisive. Most seem to agree there should be some form of MM for the rest. @Nico802vt made the point for ToO that
If they had matchmaking you're most likely gonna get stomped. I bet you'd at some point run into someone without a mic and that is a KEY factor in being successful.
My response to that is
That's a possibility, but I'd rather have that option and the chance to get in and play (and potentially run into good teammates to form a steady team) than not play at all. If I'm willing to take that risk, that should be my choice.
There's just no justifiable reason to release a 5 mission 1 strike expansion and make the endgame expansion 90% unplayable without friends on. If nothing else, there should be some matchmade equivalent to ToO, where we can at least meet others who want to run and possibly find teammates for the regular ToO. Nightfalls While I personally love to solo them, there's no reason to not have the option to search for a group for them either. So if you die, you RTO... You do that with a Fireteam too. Want an easy solution? When the randoms enter, put them in a fireteam. Then if they wipe, they RTO together and can rerun it. There's a lot that is really great and really fun with this game and yet it's constantly undermined by maddening ancillary decisions. -no matchmaking -lack of vault space -inability to delete consumables to clear what little vault space exists -shipping with virtually no default chat options -shifting, confusing and often useless economies -lack of checkpoint or progress save systems for a game with an entire Zoo full of connection errors -virtually no online forum chat presence. Oh look, a thread with a Bungie reply!
I'm moving this to #feedback yadda yadda.
-ignoring the actual feedback posts with great ideas for improving the game and instead catering to the nerf crowd. You pretty much pioneered console online matchmaking for the original Xbox, but haven't evolved at all in the last decade. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Edit: I gave DeeJ crap for leaving the discussion and accused him of turtling. I’m not going to back off the belief that as the go-between for us and Bungie, he should be willing to participate in more give and take with the community. I understand that sometimes people push too far and I have gone to bat for him in posts where people have personally attacking him, but it is not unreasonable to expect him to accept and respond to feedback to his statement. There are so many amazing posts and stories in this thread explaining why the current system just doesn't work for some people. I hope Bungie are actually paying attention and understanding there are casualties to their philosophy. The vast majority of posts have been overwhelmingly supportive, but there have been a few anti-matchmaking posts peppered in. Some have led real conversation and idea exchange, but most have come down to the same thought process. FEAR. HATE. MISTRUST. FEAR
You’re going to get grouped with AFKers, trolls and people who suck
HATE
I’m not gonna carry noobs and squeakers through ToO! I get twice the kills in strikes as my idiot teammates!”
MISTRUST
Most people probably won’t use mics or won’t know what weapons to use.
I don't understand the notion that we should restrict content for millions, because someone might be bad or mean. You can’t go through life afraid of what might happen. ------------------------------------------------------------ Edit: Back to DeeJ, if you’re going to weigh in on a topic, it’s fair to expect you not just post and leave. There are too many guardians in this post that have valid concerns, questions, and reasons why LFG just doesn't work for them. They want answers and I believe they deserve to be heard and they deserve a response. I would say to anyone who wants legitimate answers and real change towards what we the players want as opposed to what Bungie feel is best for us... Keep bumping for truth. Thank you to all who've commented and read this far. See you all amongst the stars.

  • Actually this deserves more than a bump. I am now in a clan so this is no longer an issue for me. However... Before I managed to get into a clan I would spend hours trying to find people on reddit or through this app to no avail. This slowed my progression deplorably. Once when I did manage to get into a group via reddit, I got kicked at Atheon when a friend of the fireteam leader got on the chat and said "hey man, I want in." Optional matchmaking would save people from a lot of aggravation and wasted time.

    • Can we please just get MM for Nightfall already? Even as a member of a clan and with plenty of friends in your list it can still be a pain/waste of precious playing time to get on the same page with people and get these done. Usually it's the first thing anybody wants to do after reset for the buff, so most of us don't want to wait to knock it out and if you're not fortunate enough to log on early in the week you can get left in the dust pretty quickly and confined to hounding friends who more than likely have already completed it, or sitting idle while posting up online for a FT. Since HoW has come out this is even more time consuming with the new events to wade through (and keep your friends busy). I have currently wasted over an hour on an unexpected day off unsuccessfully finding a team in the recruitment pages. Also, all of a sudden if you are still 32 (and a half even! Lol) apparently you're not good enough to go on a NF with a majority of the Elitist, all-I-apparently-have-time-for-is-gaming try-hards lurking around the forums. If I sound annoyed it's because I am. I love this game but sometimes it really seems fruitless to play if you're needing/wanting to go solo. Kinda like life in general I guess - all about who you know. Sure this is what I get for buying a game centered around social next-gen ideals. As I said, it's not that I can't normally get a team together, it's just that now with all of the newer, challenging/rewarding material for which I am truly grateful to have the OPPORTUNITY to play (sometimes), Nightfalls really should have the option for MM. There are plenty of other grievances that might soon push me and others like myself away from this game, regrettably. This should not be one of them

Let me tell you the story of how I wound up with a lot of cool people to play Destiny with on a regular basis. I guess it started when I surprised myself and bought a PS4 on January 1, 2014. I haven't made many purchases like this since having a family, but I had $500 burning a hole in my pocket and there was one whole PS4 to the dozens of XBONEs in the store I was at and my wife gave me the ok. It was a glorious feeling. Fast forward to spring of that year and I'm wondering what highly anticipated games were due later in the year. I had been out of the loop and basically missed a generation of gaming consoles and games. I knew nothing about Destiny. I was intimidated by the online nature of the game as I had never played online games. However, this was being hailed as the spiritual successor to Halo and I never had an XBox. This game was officially on my radar. I didn't do a lot of research, but I pegged it for a possible future purchase. Fast forward again. This time to late December, 2014. Once again I had some cash burning a hole in my pocket. I pulled the trigger and got Destiny and signed up for PS Plus. I then played the game (once PSN was back online) and got to level 20. Then I played strike playlists to get gear with light. I also started reading about this mysterious Vault of Glass raid. I then read things like I shouldn't even attempt it until level 26 and that I would need a fireteam of six to do it. So how would I ever find six people to raid with? Google had an answer. Enter the LFG apps/sites. Hmmm. This seemed a little intimidating, but I thought surely I could manage. So one night I opened up the laptop and went to one or another of the most popular sites. Well there were a few posts that looked promising. I replied with my level and class to the ones that required a reply. I sent messages with that same information when the instructions were to message for invite. No responses for half an hour and finally... An invite from somebody I had messaged! I had sent my message that I was a 26 hunter with no raid experience and somebody took pity on me! For a brief moment I was excited. I was going to be a raider! That moment was very brief. I pretty much immediately got kicked the minute I was in orbit with the fireteam. And that's when I decided that if this was how I was going to raid that I would just have to grind to level 30 before attempting to LFG. Little did I know that I would never LFG again. Then one day, a week or two later, I was doing strike playlists. I always entered team chat, cause who knows... Maybe some day right? Well one day I entered team chat and I see the green text that another of my team had entered. Glory! Somebody to talk to. Well this guy was basically me. No he hadn't gone to the websites, but he was a mid 20s hunter with no clan and no friends to play with. So he became my first Destiny friend. Then one day, we entered team chat (we weren't hip to the party chat thing yet) while running strikes and the level 30 hunter that had been matchmade with us entered! And he was a cool guy! And even better, he found me a couple days later and we went to the tower and spammed invites until we had a full fireteam. Then I struggled through my first VoG ever. I'm sure it was ugly, but to me it was beautiful. And my friends list grew from there. I actively play with three clans and several who aren't in clans. I had finally found a way into endgame content, and it all started by entering team chat in strike playlists. I never enter those when playing by myself these days and would probably not use matchmaking for endgame content. However, it was a great way for me to meet my first handful of "friends" and have the guts to ask members of clans on this website to help me. Anyways... That's my story. Sorry for the novel. TLDR; I struggled to find people to do endgame content with early on and tried LFG. Had a bad experience, but met all my earliest friends through a couple of guys I met through matchmaking. Wouldn't likely use matchmaking today, but I'm all for optional matchmaking.

          • Big Bump, I got Destiny just after launch and currently have 4 (real life) friends who own the game, and am in a clan with about 25 people. Anywho, my real life friends have all but stopped playing and because of that I have taken a short (2 week) hiatus. Now I go into my clan and everyone is doing level 34-35 PoE or ToO, don't want a scrub half way to 33 on their team. My opinion, it would take NOTHING away from the game if it was optional, and add a whole heck of a lot. Like many have pointed out, there is NO difference in finding randoms in websites rather than matchmaking, you'll get some scrubs, you'll get some good teamates, maybe even ones you can do end game content with later. The community at large seems to be about 85-90% in favor of the change. What gets me is Bungie's rationalization of this... it doesn't make sense. I feel like there are programming difficulties or problems that they either don't want to do, or fear will cause big problems, but they won't say that.

                • I have to agree. I would like to at least have a choice. Sometimes I have time to have my friends on for a raid but most of the time when I am on they are not on. We are living life or hanging out analog style rather than digital. I hate being blocked out of really awesome game content because Bungie decided I should be. Trust the players to work out their own social networks in game, allow players to be voted out in raids, POE, TOO, etc. and trust in your exciting game design.

Re-read the entire post with all your edits. I hope Deej had as well. This is a very well thought or post with legitimate edits in regards to how others are feeling on both sides. Hope this turns some heads at Bungie, cause at this point as big as this has become if they don't find a solution I'm done. I have been on the side of stating that Destiny is finally starting to feel like the game I wanted to buy last year. Since HoW dropped I finally feel like I have enough different things to do for the game to not feel like as much of a grind. But I have yet to play the raids, and not because I haven't tried. External LFG sites have NOT worked out for me, I've tried. I don't have the appropriate gear/weapons and my stats are nothing to brag about. Anyway hope this continues trending, keep the likes coming on this one at least.

With 'don't touch the matchmaking, don't touch the matchmaking, I hear you!' Just like Sepp I think Bungie live in their own secret bunkered world. One day everyone has to face the music. When will you dance?

Honestly, just in Matchmaking the Strike playlists, I get people leaving when the Strike STARTS about 70% of the time. Imagine how fast people will rage quit on their first death in a Nightfall. As far as Raids, I'm a living testament that RANDOM PICKUP GROUPS DON'T WORK. So many failed attempts and botched checkpoints from squeakers who THINK they know what to do, but were in fact backpacked by someone else... No communication, no teamwork... just mindless rambling about how they "earned" their Gjallarhorn and how RNG somehow makes them better than everyone else. Don't even get me STARTED on people who go AFK solely to be carried. The problem in this community is the generation of ENTITLEMENT. People who want free handouts. They want wins, weapons, etc. to be granted to them with ZERO EFFORT. Combine that with the sweaty MLG-tards, who believe that THEIR controlled environment play makes them better than everyone else... it's a recipe for disaster in ANY FPS.
