My xb1 is as far away from the router as it can be because that's where my room is. I've never had any problems with wifi until I moved houses and now the wifi is not doing too well. Had to get a different internet service in the new place and it's not near as good as the last one. Here the last few days I can't even play crucible to practice for ToO because every other match I get the caterpillar error code and it kicks me to the main menu. I'm confident that if I had teammates of the same skill level we'd go flawless but that will be hard if I keep getting kicked. I've never used an ethernet cable so I'm wondering would it be worth it to run one from one side of the house to the other? Would I still get kicked alot or would that solve it?
Edit: I did the smart thing and moved the router from the living room to right next to my xb1 and found a short ethernet cable and hooked it up. Let's see how good it works.

Ethernet is infinitely faster

I have like 13 download , 4 upload
-
20 RepliesI'm at 2.5 Mbps download and 256 kbps upload. Is this a decent connection?
-
2 RepliesTether your phone lol. I've never had any trouble what so ever. 2.1 mb download 675kb upload

Work it out and use cable.

Direct cable to your Xbox will always be better, there's no interference except for the wire resistance. If forced to run off of wifi, try to keep the hub as close and free of physical objects between line of sight as possible.

Nerdy crap: Wifi works like a hub. Any info that it receives, it broadcasts. This leads to more collisions (two signals colliding causing the packet to become corrupt) which forces it to drop more packets (udp) or re-transmit (tcp) the packet. This also can happen on ethernet (CSMA/CD) but with switches (most home routers are router/switch combinations) this is seriously cut way down. tldr; use ethernet cable always for traffic intense processes (gaming). Note: also the signal of an Ethernet cable can seriously degrade over distance. This depends on a number of factors (CAT 5, CAT 5e, CAT 6, shielded/non-shielded, etc) so check the distance between your device, and the router/switch and make sure you get the appropriate cable type.

2 RepliesWith what other people have said, anything between your router and xb will interfere(walls, mirrors especially, furniture, etc). Also if you went from being one of only a few with wifi to an area crowded with everyone and their dogs wifi router you'll run into issues as well
-
1 ReplyHardline 100% of the time.
-
2 RepliesAlways ethernet over wifi.
-
thank (most) of you for being so nice and only answering the question.

If your wifi is far away from your system, more importantly, if there are a lot of walls in between the router and the system, then it might be better to get an Ethernet. Walls have a lot of materials in them that hamper your wifi's ability to pass through them, like metal pipes, wires, and insulation

1 ReplyUgh, i have to tell people this constantly......if you read your owners manual(or even briefly skimmed) it will tell you to ensure proper internet functionality Ethernet cord is recommended.

Get a decent pair of powerline adapters - far better than wifi and you don't need a cable running throughout your house. TP Link do a good starter set for about £30

I use ethernet and i never get kicked for internet issues

1 ReplyGet a powerline adapter. I had the same issues as you and that solved it.

My router is right beside my xbox and i still lag lol
-
1 ReplyEven though i have an excellent dual band router I go with a wired cat5e connection. If you have an attic to run the cable through... Its worth the effort.
-
It's all about how you configure your wifi, a cable gets rid of any need to do such things. A nice router will be able to transmit on 14 different signal bands (9 N bands and 5 G bands for you dicks that question me). I guarantee you at LEAST one of said bands will be clear enough to get crystal clear wifi. After that, it all just depends on 1.Ping 2. Speeds you pay for. TL;DR: A nice router vs. Ethernet cables makes no difference.

Get a PowerLine adapter if hardline is not directly available.

4 RepliesSpeedtest and ping test would be helpful here and here

I have an independent source for mine. I hook it up wirelessly

I had the same issue. Was getting the " no network detected error code canary" Bull shite every 10 minutes. Ran a 100ft ethernet cord from my router to my xbox. Never had a problem since. Definitely worth it.
-
Wired. Unless you have a nice provider that supplies you with a router than has dual band and 150mbps speeds. Thanks Virgin Media.

2 RepliesYes, absolutely get an Ethernet cable. Wifi gaming is aggravating to say the least.
