So... We have Exotics, Legendary, Rare, Uncommon, Common weapons... Now we have the "Sidearm" category (Albeit, containionetwo pistols). Just a shot in the dark here; but what about "Classic" weapons? Why not an expansion to Earth's Pre-Collapse/Pre-Golden Age history?
READ ALL OF THIS FIRST BEFORE COMMENTING, PLEASE!
Classic Weapons: Weapons predating the Golden Age, predating even the era of the Khvostov 7G-02. More like the Kalashnikov Series (AK Series) and even further back.
Excavate weapons; clear the dirt and rust; upgrade them. Turn a simple AR-15 into a laser light show!
Reasoning:
- It adds even more content
- More diversity (TONS OF VARIATIONS)
- So much more opportunities to build stories out of (Find out more about the past)
Ways to implement and distribute:
- Older weapons may act as blank slates, open to customization. Customizing them to shoot many different types of ammo. Solid, light, etc. (Credit: afrosheen)
- Storylines on the discovery of Humanity's older technology. Predating even the Golden Age.
- Many weapons have variants of a single model (Thousands of weapons to obtain and choose from)
- Random "Ancient Cache" spawns on Earth --> Act just like chests: Except they are piles of ammo, consumables, a piece of armor, or a weapon
- "Human History" Playlist in the Crucible --> Maps of the Golden Age areas on Earth, Pre-Golden Age areas, etc.
- Excavate weapons and have a variety of in-depth modifications to help bring them on par with "up-to-date" weapons. (Credit: Nathat777)
- Certain rewards can be obtained only by beating certain VERY HARD Raids (SEPARATE FROM THE MAIN STORYLINE) under a certain time limit. These shall be apart of, what I call, The "Pitch Black Darkness" Raids. "PBD" Challenge. (Credit: steaknive)
- Weapons can be highly customizable, in turn offering lower damage. However, more damage can be applied for less customization. (Credit: Andrea)

Storyline ("Going Back to Your Roots"):
Thanks to the efforts of the Guardians, the Fallen's grasp on areas of the Solar System has been loosened considerably. With the assistance of the Awoken, the Guardians have begun their campaign in reclaiming the rest of Earth. Bring justice, and take back what is ours! Pave the way for the light, Guardians!
Starting with Russia, Guardians will tread through the ancient capital, Moscow. Attack the Fallen Remnants and reclaim Saint Petersburg. Find all you can to help restore the prosperity the Traveler had once brought us. Go as far as even reentering the underground ruins of Chernobyl, to help the Rasputin AI find a secret which Humanity had left long ago. Ancient weapons made long ago were as reliable as could be. Take them up and show the Fallen scum that they are not worthy being in the presence of even our most outdated weapons.
Enter the United States, and trek trough Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, and Miami. Expel the invading Fallen and Cabal from the Western Hemisphere. Attempt to reactivate ancient orbital defenses to end their nuisance of an invasion.
A new threat has arisen in Europe (Region credit: durrmai001), the remnants of the Hive have landed in the United Kingdom, in an effort to restore the wicked Crota's soul. Rampage through the war-torn beauty of London, Glasgow, and Leeds. Turn them into ash. However, the meddling of the Hive Remnants has led to the awakening of British machines created for the purpose of "protecting Earth;" The Renegade Exo. Made to be human, minus the fear of death, they intend to "defend" Earth. Even if it includes destroying the very people who gave them the breath of life, leading to a conspiracy that may very well shatter the beliefs of the Guardians.
"Ancient" or "Classic?" Your choice!!!! (Credit: Fr0stgaurd)

To pile on one more suggestion: Part of the customization could be that perks are locked behind certain challenge sets, like the thorn quest. For example you get the "frame" of an fn herstal 5-7 (sidearm) and several quest lines are offered to you, each of which grants the weapon a particular elemental damage type. To complete these however would require the player to complete multiple challenges. Afterwards the next perk is selected via the same route. That way the player could build a custom weapon by selecting the perks they want, but would have to put in considerable work to do so. Idea for one of the quest lines: "a cold and bitter war," would grant solar damage or full auto. Task 1 = capture 500 control points, task 2 = destabilize the fallen and give occupation of the moon by drawing a large contingent of hive forces (max level) onto the surface (think Indiana Jones boulder scene), task 3 = amped up Valus strike with void burn (think that's the right element) and extra major scions where named ones have to be taken out before the boss, final task = VoG hard without a wipe. Should also have new perks like the ability to steal ammo with every shot that lands etc, crazy stuff but would require crazy time investment.

If you haven't seen it already I do know that the new iron banner hand cannon/sidearm for TTK looks like a p226 with a suppressor and a laser sight/tac light. http://gamerant.com/destiny-the-taken-king-weapons-armor-630/ check it out :P but I also agree with you. I want a m4:D

I can't even...
You have a Pistol list with NO. DESERT. EAGLE!
-
You got a lot of time on your hand. But good ideas.
-
I'd sooner have more info/content/weapons from the Golden Age than things I can get from Battlefield or COD just slightly Destiny flavoured. Appreciate the effort and enthusiasm you've brought to your idea though and applaud all the feedback you've had, clearly a popular idea.

Bump city!

I don't like this idea. If I wanted to play a game with modern weapons I'd play battlefield. I credit you for the creativity and thought put into this, but I think it would be more interesting to explore the horizons of the solar system and futuristic and mysterious technology than to re-imagine a gun I have under my bed.

Keep it up!
