Step 1: Figure out what's available.
Use a database like PlanetDestiny or DestinyDB. Search for the weapon you're planning to reroll, and figure out what perks are possible.
Do this before you start rerolling. You don't want to find out you wasted 50 motes trying to get a full-auto pulse rifle or a hand cannon with Firefly.
Edits 1-2: You can reforge Iron Banner guns at the Gunsmith, even though they don't have the Reforge Ready perk. (Hat tip to Altros for the reminder.) As reported by several others below, and confirmed by my own experiment with my Gheleon's Demise, these still use their pre-HoW loot tables.
Step 2: Create an achievable plan.
If you go in saying "I want a scout rifle with Full Auto, Explosive Rounds, and Zen Moment," you're going to end up poor and disappointed. The median number of times you need to reroll to get just Full Auto is 6: half the time it'll be more and half the time it'll be less. The median number of times you need to reroll to get Full Auto and Explosive Rounds is 22, which will take a while to get but is still achievable. But the median number of rolls to get Full Auto, Explosive Rounds, and Zen Moment is 178. That would be a great gun, but you're going to go broke trying to get it.
So instead of going in with an exact picture of what you want, pick just one perk you can't live without, and then maybe two or three you'd like to see elsewhere on the gun. So maybe instead of that very particular Full Auto/Explosive Rounds/Zen Moment roll, you want Full Auto and a talent that increases stability (Smallbore, Braced Frame, or Hand-Laid Stock). That's a median of 13 reforges to pick up, which is completely feasible.
Step 3: Know when to quit.
Once you get to your planned version of the gun, resist the temptation to try for a better roll. That's the equivalent of adding extra requirements in Step 2, and it probably pushes you back to that place where you'll be rolling 180 times.
Get to the version of the gun you decided to get in Step 2, then stop rolling.

4 RepliesWe definitely could use a way to purchase Weapon Parts. Even have the Gunsmith trade 10 Marks for 20 Weapon Parts. Preferably Vanguard, though if he also accepted Crucible Marks I wouldn't complain. Then the only thing left is class specific armor material. If the Vanguard mentors traded Marks for that stuff it would be great.

Bump!

I re rolled my N7 scout and got full auto explosive and zen moment, it's on my Titan I just laughed and said wow What a roll Gonna be my go to scout for sure
-
3 RepliesWhy does everyone say you can't get auto on a pluse It popped up twice while rolling my allfate for Headseeker

1 ReplyWasn't the Vorpal Sword the one that killed the Jabberwocky in Alice in Wonderland?
-
I would say to only start rolling when you have a reasonable amount of motes. You might have a weapon that is ok, and if you re-roll it once it could easily get worse. You don't know how many times you will need to roll it.
-
3 Repliesim yet to see field scout on a re roll OR firefly on hand cannons. is ff even available on cannons?
-
Instructions unclear finger stuck in toaster please elaborate

4 RepliesEdited by SweetZombieJesus: 5/27/2015 4:20:37 AMOh really... Zero Point + 2 motes = full auto, explosive RDS, zen moment. On my hunter Boom! Rolled full auto, armor piercing, third eye, on High Road Soldier. Not bad. On my Titan.

7 RepliesI'm not entirely sure if I should re roll her benevolence or not, can someone tell me if my roll is good?
-
2 RepliesWait, can we re-forge any legendary weapon now?! I thought it was just the house of wolves legendaries....... Hearing people sound like they've re-forged pre HoW weapons. If so how do we do it, at the gunsmith?
-
1 ReplyAnd here I am still rocking the Multi tool. I wonder how many kills I have with it now...
-
2 RepliesEdited by IndianaJet72: 5/26/2015 9:19:52 PMI went for big time stability on my Her Benevolence sniper....got it with Rodeo and Hand-laid Stock. The shoot to loot was a throw-in but I couldn't give up the stability perks. Probably could have gotten a better final perk...but this is what I was looking for. The thing is a beast, I can pop off 4 rapid critical hits with the gun sites barely moving even under heavy fire. My tracking and tripod with Arc Damage on my Dreamwaker took about 5 rolls....On that one I got lucky.

23 RepliesWhat is an optimal roll for the fusion rifle on my hunter? This is the roll for it, right out of the crucible. Also, should I reroll a Judgement VI until I get LiTC, Shot Package and Smallbore? What is the median for that roll, or should I specifically just go for Shot Package, whatever comes along and rifled barrel?
-
Re rolled an efrideet spear, got rodeo, last round, with a stability and field scout perk. Awesome pvp and pve gun. I dont think it gets better!!!!!
-
My Gheleon's can support that, no full auto :(
-
4 RepliesI just wanted Tracking and Clusterbombs on an Arc Rocket Launcher... RNGesus, go -blam!- yourself.
-
I got feeding frenzy, spray and play, field scout on timurs lash

Edited by Naruto Lightning: 5/26/2015 11:00:24 PMIt took me 50 times to get the roll I wanted on he benevolence. Only Useful on Archon Priest. :) Thanks for iron banner weapon tip, I need to reroll jholders hammer.
-
1 ReplyGot the new vanguard scout with explosive rounds, full auto, and zen moment without a re roll. Dropped that way for me.
-
2 RepliesThe new perks suck. I'll stick to Iron Banner & Raid Weapons.
-
I totally agree. I went broke. I wasted like 10k glimmer and had to trade a bunch of shards for motes before I got my perks on my synesthete(check it out on my hunter) I was really happy when I got it, but until then, I was a really unhappy gamer.
-
11 RepliesOr, alternatively: Just get two copies. Reroll the worst one, and your gun will only get better.
-
9 RepliesI only had 2 I wanted but apparently if you want final round and luck in the chamber on a hand cannon it takes a long time. I've use 110 rolls so far and not for it.
-
U have no clue how much motes of light, glimmer, weapon parts, and dismantled guns in my vault I've gone through....still addicted to trying.
