the Fallen had a traveler and a golden age of their own? or was it our traveler but the darkness took over the Fallen, causing the Traveler to relocate?

The great machine refers to The Traveler. There is only one Traveler. The Traveler was first guarding a planet called Fundament, which is where the Hive originated, and tried to drown all 532 races of Fundament in a tidle wave called the Zyzygy. After the traveler failed to eliminate the proto-Hive, it "Traveled," to other planets to try and find a race to call its Guardians. It visited a lot of planets, including the Eliksni (Fallen,) planet. When the Fallen failed to protect the Light and stop the Darkness, it left them, which made them take to the Darkness. Variks wants to speak to the Great Machine again because it gave the Fallen light. He probably was once a "Warlock," since he was a scribe for House Judgement, and he wants knowledge. He wants our Ghosts probably because he had a Ghost once.

Yup. There's even a reference to "The Scatter" which seems like it's the Eliksni (the Fallen name for their people) version of our collapse and exodus.
-
"The Scatter" is when the Queen killed the Wolf Kell before Skolas. The "Wirlwind" is what the Eliksni call the destruction of their Homeworld by the Darkness, and yes the Travaler (they call it the Great Machine) did apparently interact with the Eliksni and they want it back.
-
But this is no toy to be passed around by children, but the last beacon of hope. I think, let those who are on our side join us, then they will again have access to their great machine once again.
-
True, it just shows that since the Eliksni never tried to negotiate with the City or even just demand that the Traveler be handed over that Bungie is bad at logic cause everything in Destiny require copious amounts of violence and death and nothing else.
-
I'm certainly no expert on Destiny lore, but the Fallen seem like the type to take what they want, hence the lack of negotiation attempts. As for making demands on the Traveler... well, doing that would be met with a bullet to the face, followed by a brutal t-bagging and your corpse getting fed to a thrall for good measure.
