All PSN and Xbox Live do when it comes to gaming is give you access to online play. With dedicated servers the server would translate the different code for each platform since they can't natively communicate with each other in their current state. This is why PSN, Xbox Live, and PC players could all play Final Fantasy XIV together and PSN and PC players play Final Fantasy XIV together.
